You can't please everyone, it's omplosoblo

in #philosophy7 years ago

I made this mistake myself, when I first found Steemit I kept on thinking: "How can I make friends with everyone?" . And this questions is not an easy one to answer, or at least is not for me. The truth is that it's almost impossible for any of us come up with a blog or initiative that will be liked by everyone, and that's probably the healthiest way to think about this.

(btw, I know the typo bugs you... it's ok.. let it go)

I was reminded today by @luzcypher of the 25/25/50 rule, it's been years since I've heard it, but its a common conversation in the world of music, and dominates music business itself as it probably keeps producers and artists mind focused on the task at hand.

  • 25% of people will love your work
  • 25% of people will hate your work
  • 50% of people have no idea you exist

I found this reminder specially important today, as we had found some let's say "negative" behaviors and comments within our #openmic community. For a minute there, I felt that It was my duty to react, to say some stinging truths to this user, but... after being reminded of this balanced truth, I felt completely OK with letting it slide.

We have to be Ok with those who don't like us

It's bound to happen, specially if you are making some waves in the ocean. There is going to be someone on this platform who is going to think you are full ot it. There is going to be another user who thinks your ideas are dumb, or that you are being unfair. The important questions becomes:

How do we deal with this? How do we let this just slide?

I guess for me, specially today, it helped to know that if we are getting some backlash, or some negativity, this is happening because we are making enough noise, and maybe that publicity is a net positive for the community, and it's an indication of its viral growth. I guess we could compare it to the known idea that, there is no such thing as bad press... so maybe I should be celebrating this problems.

I've had a full day to think about this, almost 14 hours to reflect on what is to come, what we have no seen yet. It's no secret than the open mic contest will continue it's course this year, and that the songwriter's challenge has another round up it's sleeve, so we really have to be ready to deal with it all, the good and the bad.

The sure way to fail

One of my favorite things to do, is to talk to people that have been on this earth for a lot longer than me. I love the ability to tap into wisdom with a simple conversation, wrapped in smiles and stories. One of my good friends is about to hit the big 80, and a couple of years ago, when I had left my day job and decided to branch out on my own he said to me a piece of advise that I carry like a tattoo in the forefront of my mind.

"I don't really know how you can succeed at being an Entrepreneur, I'm an old man with old ideas... but I do know how you fail, if you think you can appease everyone, make everyone happy, you are sure to crash and burn in months..."

I for one intend to take the negativity (it's very little) that is sure to come our way as an indication of our growth, and as a sure sign that we must be doing something right in this community. It's my sincere hope that the other judges, the other leaders of the #openmic community do the same as well.

Songwriter's Challenge #2

giphy (34).gif

We got one more week left, and it's going to over, the guitar will be sent to its new owner, and the final tally of votes will reveal the name, but I feel like we are just getting started. This year, 2018, is going to be a fantastic year for the crypto world, and Steemit is no exception, I fully expect our growth to be exponential and along with that hundreds if not thousands of musicians join our ranks, start their own initiatives, and add to the wealth of this platform.

In private conversations with the other judges, we are already drawing out some ideas for Challenge #2. Our growth and Steem Valuation is going to allow us to do much more for the contestants, to the point that it might seem too good to be true. We are talking recording packages, recording studio bundles, instruments, so many things have been brought to the table that it feels a bit overwhelming to dream of the possibilities that are ahead.

I expect to be back on the saddle for the second challenge sometime after the end of January, there is some things I need to attend to with family that might keep me a bit away from Steemit, but just a little bit... However it's very important to me, as it is for the other judges to be able to dedicate my full attention to listening to the entries, reading the lyrics and interacting with the participants, so I want to really focus on the task at hand when the contest restarts.

In any case my friends, I'm pretty excited for 2018. I believe this is the year, and not in a cliche way people like to talk about, I mean it this time. We are not late to this party, we are right at the beginning, and this is something we can all celebrate with our finest of wines.

I'll sign off for now, got a long day ahead of me tomorrow...

Much love to you all

It's taken me a long time to realize that, in any area of life, I feel healthiest when I look to connect with the people I really vibe with. Certainly songwriting is no exception. You can't write a song to please EVERYBODY, if you tried it would probably sound like... oh I don't know, mush. A hodgepodge of different styles that don't go together. Even the most popular songs have their detractors. Regardless, I think it's always important to keep in mind that some people just won't vibe with what you do... and that's cool. Finding and connecting with those who do is part of what it's about. I like the 25/25/50 rule, that's a good way of putting it into perspective I've never heard before.

That said, I'm floored by the level of creativity and craft in the Steemit Songwriters' Competition, and so grateful to get to be a part of it. I arrived late, and am sorry I missed so much, but I'm very excited to hear that there's more in the works!

Thank you SO much @meno for all the work and creative mojo you put in to make this contest possible! I'm having a ton of fun and I very much appreciate the opportunity to be involved in something this awesome :)

Happy you are part of the family now... loved your last entry man... played it a few times this morning... much success to you

Thanks, I appreciate the welcome and support! Glad you enjoyed that last one, it was one of two songs written, practiced, and performed in a 48 hour period. I was planning on writing one, but the second demanded to be finished and played as well so... I did 😜

Wishing you the very best :)

Negativity is a part of the process i think, we have to deal with it, face it, not strike back with it's own game, I think this type of situations are signs for everyone who wants to make something out of this life to continue forward.
The Open mic and Songwriters challenge are excelent oportunities for every musician here on Steemit,I mean making some movement with your own music almost inmedatlly ? it's something that seemed impossible if you ask me years ago.
I'm really looking forward the next songwritters challenge, I stepped in very late at this one haha.
Cheers !!

"...not strike back with it's own game..."

Trolls HATE you! LOL

Good!

you are going to rock the next one Ale... im sure of it!

Well, it's true you can't please everyone, an really, you shouldn't even try. What you guys are doing is incredible, it has the potential of changing lives, I've been here barely two months, and it's already helped me accomplish many things I've wanted to do for a long long time.

I'm so happy to read about round #2!!!!
I've written some of the best songs I've ever done for this contest, and it's because I feel like there's a purpose, as I said before, I don't think I will win, but the weekly purpose and focus that's brought to my life is invaluable!! :)

thats the right attitude my friend.. we all win... regardless of the prize... I mean imagine what I say today, my side income is listening to songwriters online... WHAT?

somedays I gotta pinch myself in the arm...

@meno Very true! You can't please all that many. Life is tough then you you die. Best wishes ! :D

tragic, but yet the very truth!

So true 😂

Why even try :)

I'm happy to hear about the Songwriter's Challenge 2.
You have no idea how much this has helped me write songs.
4 of the songs I've written for the challenge are songs I will definitely play forever and probably record with a band.
Thank you @meno.

I'm the one who is grateful for you participating @tarotbyfergus this contest would be nothing if it wasn't for talented musicians like yourself

Much wisdom shared here, my brother @meno! Come hell or high-water, we shall indeed proceed with ever-more incredible rounds of the Songwriters Challenge! It's been a true blessing - and thank you for being the brainchild behind it all - you rock, bro!

Don't dread on it too much. ..it's not worth the energy. I never tried to please everybody. I noticed it at the ones around me and find it very exhausting, so not only do I refuse to do it but I literally don't give a rat's ass. I did notice what happened in the #openmic community but at the same time, some negativity from time to time but you know what? While I do not know all the details, people tend to start quarells because they are bored. Sometimes is that simple. :)

Is omplosoblo a made up word? Sounds deep 😁

I thought it was "impossible" with some @meno flavor added to it :)

Could be! Could also be part of some secret incantation we better should not speak of 😂

P:S Just wanted to let you know I checked your profile and I can't believe something ^^ Just last week I was searching for some bands out of my comfort zone and I ended up listening to one of your bands song which is Olvidé San Telmo - Dónde vas a estar (on youtube) ...funny how synchronicity works.

Good morining Dear Szuri... yes, it's written wrong to make a point (grammar police) but it does sound kind of cool... i think i will keep it!

;)

Hi Wow! It looks like it's going to be a very good year for steemit, at least that's what I'm thinking. Open mic is getting huge, I don't know how it's going to be handled if it keeps growing like this.
Nugcoin to da moon!

I guess we just have to take it one day at a time... and yes... NugCoin to the moon!!!

I'm not missing the next songwriters challenge. That is for sure!!!
