My Nominations for the PHC Top 3 Monthly Contest – Kids TV Shows {From an 80's Baby 😉}

How’s it going guys? I hope you all are enjoying the weekend! The @phctop3 crew and I had a blast these last few days polishing off the latest contest post. We are so excited to see what you all have in store for us this month as we find some childish joy in remembering our favorite television shows that we loved to watch as kids! Of course the panel couldn’t help but join in, but our nominations are not eligible for prizes or the dpoll.

As usual, this was so tough to pick just three! There were so many I could have easily gone with after growing up in the 80’s with tons great shows to choose from. Though my sisters and I grew up in a neighborhood where every single kid spent tons of time outside playing when the weather was nice, we also had plenty of nasty days or evenings before bed to watch some of our favorite shows. Luckily I don’t remember too many fights over the remote, as we all enjoyed a lot of the same ones!

Before I get to my top choices, I have to give out a few nods to close contenders. I would be remiss to not mention ThunderCats as it was a family favorite, and one of the first interactions @cheese4ead and I had on Steemit was on a post where he mentioned the cartoon! Some of the seeds of the current contest were sown on that fun post of his. I even still have a Lion-O action figure in my nostalgia box. The sisters and I also loved some of the more typical "girly" ones like The Care Bears, Rainbow Brite, Punky Brewster, and of course Jem and the Holograms. We had an affinity for He-Man, as well, so it wasn’t all rainbows and fluffy clouds. I’m sure I’m blanking on quite a few, but I’ll get into my top ones now and save some for the rest of you. Looking forward to seeing your faves!

This months topic is Kids TV Shows

My Nominations are:

Nomination Number One

Fraggle Rock

My Reasons for the Nomination

My childhood would not have been the same without Jim Henson. I never met the man, but he feels like a part of my family. So many of our favorite movies and shows came from his wickedly creative mind. Fraggle Rock was definitely one of our top shows, though, so much so that I’ve already bought the first season on DVD for my niece to watch and enjoy, as well. The puppets of course are even to this day so creative and fun to look at. We are lucky enough to have the Center for Puppetry Arts here in Atlanta, so I’ve been able to see some of the puppets from this show and other like the Muppets and Sesame Street in the museum. The music is also so much fun! As with many of the iconic kids shows, the theme song elicits a smile from the first note. There was definitely no chance of this show not being in my top three!

Nomination Number Two

Reading Rainbow

My Reasons for the Nomination

This was another show close to my heart as I have loved to read for as long as I can remember, too! Raise your hand if your favorite day of the school year was the book fair? Though it is a television show, it is centered around getting kids excited about books. Entertaining but also so educational—a winning combination for children and parents! Obviously it was a hit as it spanned three decades on PBS. LeVar Burton was the host, but all kinds of guests came on to read the book of the day. I think they have been trying to bring the show back with an updated concept, but there’s some legal battle with the rights to some of the aspects of the show. I hope they can work it out to share this gem with a new generation! This is another one where the theme song just takes you right back to childhood singing it in the living room.

Nomination Number Three

The Jetsons

My Reasons for the Nomination

I had to pick at least one cartoon for my top three, and this one carries a few memories. What kid doesn’t get excited about space ships, robots, and other fun inventions and technology? Not only was it just a fun watch, but my last name is pretty close to theirs so I remember thinking that was pretty cool as a kid. This show was created by Hanna-Barbera, which is another household name from my childhood. The animation studio was behind so many classics like The Flintsones, Yogi Bear and The Smurfs! Gosh, I really wish I had a Rosie of my own as an adult...

That’s all I’ve got for this round! Time for you all to join in and show us your top choices to have some fun and maybe win a few prizes, as well! Click Here for the contest post!

Right on! Great post!

I didn't watch fraggle rock and never heard of rainbow trail but the Jetsons! That was a great one as well! I totally forgot about it! A fun watch.

I think what I like about posts like yours is even if I didn't watch some of them, it still reminded me of similar shows that I completely forgot about.
For example, there was a puppet show I watched that didn't seem to be as popular with the people for some reason. It was Under The Umbrella Tree... I loved Iggy the lizard lol there was also another one. Let me find it... Groundling Marsh! That is what Fraggle Rock mad me think about. See what happens when sharing? Thanks! Now off I go to see if Frankie isn't too old to watch it :p

Totally agree! I have a feeling there might be a lot this round that I'm not familiar with, but the fun comes through it all! Certain themes are just timeless when it comes to keeping kids entertained and itching for adventure. It's even more fun though to share our own favorites with the next generation! My niece loves the Nightmare Before Christmas already, so there are plenty of other ones we have yet to initiate her with still, too!

Not trying to copy you but I agree with what you say here! lol.

Will you be showing her Beetlejuice after? I am not sure of her age, but all Tim Burton movies are pretty awesome. My kids are scared of Beetlejuice so it's not their time yet... I already tried.. lol oops.

OH! What about Edward Scissor Hands? That would be an ok Burton touch... ok now I am thinking of all his movies now lol

Tim Burton ranks right up there with Jim Henson I think, just a bit quirkier in some ways. ;) She might be a bit young for Beetlejuice yet (she's only 3), but I think she has seen Coraline maybe? I do love Edward Scissor Hands myself. ;)

Coraline scared my kids! Haha, if she was able to watch that, she's a trooper. I didn't realize your niece was just 3yrs old. I thought she was older. Or is it a different niece?

Just the one. She seems older sometimes in how big she is and her attitude is just about a teenager's, haha! I think being an only child she's not as scared of certain things since we don't react to them. Or maybe we're just exposing her so early she doesn't know any better, oops. ;)

Great post and choices @plantstoplanks

Fraggle Rock is one of my faves. The theme tune is ridiculously addictive, the characters are superb; as you would expect from JH, and the stories were very cool. One of the characters is called Wembley. Wembley is the home of English football, I mean soccer, sorry Katie! ;)

They even have little workers busily building the sugar structures for them to eat at will. For all the CGI you can see these day, Fraggle Rock was as real as it gets. The Muppet Show is one of my all time faves too. Wet yourself funny. Again, as life like and real as any animation or even some bad actors, come to think of it!

The second choice was a new one to me but any show that inspires children to read and to learn is quality in my book. Catchy theme tune too.

The Jetsons should have been my 'cup of tea' but it didn't get major viewing time at the age that I was watching. It seemed to of either been shown before my time or re-run after I left home in the UK. I agree with you though, flying saucers and futuristic tech, what's not to like?

Great job.

Gaz

Oh too funny with the football/soccer connection. ;) I loved the sugar structures! Jim Henson really is just so fantastic. I can't wait for the Dark Crystal prequel series they are releasing on Netflix to come out in August. It looks fantastic! I'm sure it will bring me straight back to my youth!

I have never watched the Dark Crystal! Shame on me. I need to rectify that immediately. You would of thought I would be all over it being a FR and Muppets fan. It just looked too weird for me as a kid.

Oh man, you definitely need to add that to the list! The Netflix prequel looks totally wicked, so if nothing else watch the original so you can also watch the series with the updated CGI and effects! It's definitely a total fantasy world, but one I would gladly enter over and over. :)

It's definitely going on the list. 😁

I have not watched any of the three but i am sure they are good :p

Thanks for popping by! :) I don't watch a ton of television anymore, but those memories from childhood sure do stick.

Thunder Thunder Thundercats Hoooo

I loved that show, I remeber having a friend who had all those action figures and I loved to go over to play as I never had any of them myself.

You're welcome to come join us with any entry this month. ;) Thundercats is definitely a winner in my book. I think we might have had one of the other figures, but I think Lion-O is the only one that made it through childhood. I don't know how I ended up keeping him, but glad I did!

Hmmm, I guess being born in the late 80s, I missed out on a few of the ones you mentioned but the Jetsons is a familiar name although I never really watched it.

Funny how there are so many TV shows you thought you watched yet there's a load more that you never even heard of! Loved reading about your childhood TV shows, I think they deeply ingrain themselves in despite not watching them for many years :)

I think we really were spoiled with so many choices! Though I'm sure there's plenty now, as well, especially when you count all the YouTube entertainment available. It is interesting that even regionally within the US there are different things that were popular or shows that only aired in certain markets. Then on the other hand, there are some shows that people all over the world enjoyed! Gotta love how good entertainment brings us all together with such fond memories. :)

Thanks for these awesome suggestions for our contest this month! We've given you an upvote and logged your nominations, ready for the dpoll - keep an eye on our blog for the dpoll post!

Remember to transfer 50% of the post payout as SBD to @phctop3 with a link to your entry in the memo, otherwise it won't be eligible. This is the minimum entry fee, there is no maximum. You can add as much as you like to your initial fee to give you bigger potential rewards.

Fantastic post and great entries @plantstoplanks. A nice mix of shows. My personal favourite was Fraggle Rock.

Thundercats was my brothers era so we watched a lot of them too. I love the Lion-o figure. Awesome.

The only one I recognize is Thunder Cats toy, having had boys perhaps that is what made the difference, or living in South Africa we were entertained with different shows.

Good days outdoors like most children, late afternoon shows after a bath were allowed after homework!

I think it's kind of cool that ThunderCats seems to be a really well known one! Otherwise, it is really interesting to see the different ones that were available all over the world!

Revealing to see how different young boys are different to girls in choice of viewing they remember.
