"Bleeding Heart Vine."
The botanical name for Bleeding Heart Vine is called Cleroddendrum Thomsoniae. It is also known as The Glory Bower or Tropical Bleeding Heart. There are over 400 species of bleeding hearts which include shrubs, climbers, herbaceous plants and trees. They prefer warmer climates and are characterized by their showy flowers with deep red corollas which emerge from white, balloon shaped calyxes.
The Bleeding Heart Vine differs from the Bleeding Heart variety from the Decentra genus and is not classified as a tropical plant like the Bleeding Heart Vine. The latter is a twining evergreen shrub which originates from West Africa. They are easy to grow, are great climbers and very prolific. Gardeners love the fact that these plants can be trimmed to desired sizes.
The fruit of the Bleeding Heart Vine is black and contains black seeds also. These plants are easily propagated with the use of cuttings and also by seed if planted in spring. Some types of Bleeding Heart can be extremely invasive but the Cleroddendrum is non-aggressive and easily trainable and will grow to 15 feet if not trimmed.
