In today modern world, user data are considered as e-gold. Companies are trying everything they can to get more data from their users. They can either use those data for their own good, redistributing, selling, or exchanging with other companies. Having said that, users have very little control over how much data that companies can be gathered or how those data can be used.

As we all know giant conglomerate such as Facebook, Google, Apple have been collecting their user data to push their own ads to you. They know who you are, what kind of phone you use, how often you use it, search term that you used in the last 5 minutes or last month. Those giant corporates have control over what kind of information they will send to you and what you see on the internet. Information can be censored if it deems no good to them.

What about my medical data?

Yep, if your medical data are being handled by corporates, chances are they can be used for research (including advertising) purposes. Your medical data could be seen by any stranger who has access to the database. If it is required by the law, all of your medical data can be sent to the court and you have no control which medical condition you do not wish to be seen by the public.

Other problem with today medical data

Medical data do not only experience a high risk of being leaked, they can also be handled poorly. Every time you go to a different hospital they will have to run a diagnostic on you again because most of the time your previous result and test will not be transferred with you from one hospital to another.

Imagine you are overseas and you need to do all the diagnostics again including a blood test and an allergic test. Think about the cost and the time requirements that will affect you.

Lucky enough! MediBloc has a solution. So what is MediBloc?

Medibloc is a decentralized database for medical data that build on a blockchain. This will allow the medical database with the maximum security.

MediBloc also gives the patient the right to view and control their private medical data. Patients who use MediBloc can choose which doctor can view their medical data and how much data can be seen by that doctor. This will speed up the checking process by providing pertinent information to that doctor for the best medical diagnostic and treatment

Dr. Allen Wookyun Kho and Dr. Eunsol Lee are the founders of this project. Both of them have great knowledge of medical and engineering.

MediBloc is an open-source project, this will allow transparency and developers can join and contribute to the project. MediBloc also provides API and APK for developers to integrate new services within the platform.

Real-life scenarios

I was on an overseas trip and I got sick, I had to go to their local hospital for medical treatments. The hospital knew nothing about me or my past medical data and we both did not speak the same language.

The hospital had to run every medical diagnostic that required to ensure the safest treatment for me, which took about 2 days to complete. I also had to contact my insurance in my hometown for confirmation. The insurance company also wanted to see the results from all diagnostics before they could decide whenever I would be covered.

If MediBloc was the middleman, I could give that local hospital all of my medical data and past conditions, they only needed to find what caused my sickness. Once the cause of the problem had been identified they could be updated into my MediBloc database and sent directly to my insurance company. This would cut down on the unnecessary cost and time involved.

I could choose what medical data to provide based on my decision and the requirement at the time. This is called access level (you can see from the table above), I also can pass my right to my family members or next in kin to decide on my behalf to ensure an appropriate amount of data can be given for access to the hospital.
