The Idea!

You hear it all the time... Cut back. Eliminate. Do without. You don’t need it. STARVE.

That’s what most people think of when they hear the word ‘diet’.

For the most part... I’m a proponent of, "less is more" buuuuttt... When it comes to eating healthy maybe there's another way to think about this.

Is eating healthy all about depriving yourself? Or is there room for MORE?

  • More vegetables.
  • More fruit.
  • More fibrous carbohydrates.
  • More live food.
  • More water.
  • More mindfulness.
  • More activity.
  • More! More! And more!

More, as it turns out, can be a pretty good thing! So perhaps there is value in shifting our focus...

What do you think?

More About More!

Health is handed to each of us in the form of more. Could more of the what’s right for us be more right than ever!?

When I think about it, life’s so much more about more than I initially thought!

As a certified personal trainer, I’m pretty good about eating healthy.

I avoid corporate cooking as much as possible. You just never really know what’s being used to make that food...

And let’s face it! There’s not much love in what the corporate kitchens produce to begin with. It’s not exactly grandmas kitchen right!?

I don’t trust food that’s been prepared with only taste (and profits) in mind so I’m increasingly mindful of what I’m putting in my mouth these days.

I guess that’s why I plant a garden each summer. I want the extra connection to the plants and processes that make up my diet and ultimately me!

Staying attentive and authenticity in touch with every step of how the food gets to my plate makes me aware of what’s healthy and wholesome and what’s just not!

I know that health isn’t something that randomly shows up... it’s something you intentionally compound on a day by day, meal by meal basis.

I want whole foods! I want nutritious foods! I want foods that are real and naturally derived. They sprout and they rot. They nourish every cell in your body with loving and delicious kindness.

That’s why I decided that I wanted to make a change! I wanted to do a health experiment to see what sort of difference it would make to eat #OneMore healthy thing every single day for the next 100 days!

It's Easy!

It’s time to get back to the basics of what food is essentially about.

Eating #OneMore healthy thing takes nearly zero time and cooking skills simply aren’t much of a concern.

You just let the food do what it does, listen to your body, and keep it easy!

You can eat your #OneMore raw or if it would be better cook it in your favorite way!

No sweat! Just healthy eats by the handful!

1Hand

I have found that most people have absolutely no idea of what a correct portion size is. Personally, I like to keep it simple! Everyone has different metabolic needs. BIG people have BIG hands! Small people have small hands. That's natures clue and a great reminder! 1 portion is 1 hand full of whatever's healthy for you! So that means your health is literally in your hands! Cool right!?

1Eats

And here's the other part of the equation... Nature tends to divvy it's self out by the handful! There's a reason an apple fits nicely in your hand! It's a subtle clue about what a health portion size looks like! Don't stuff yourself! Take it one handful at a time and you will be sooooo much better off health wise!

Hello today, @wit.metcalfe! Great post, and you say reasonable things, not just "not" and more "not".

Please learn from my content but apply your own discression (and that of your nutritionlist or dietition) as only you know what sorts of foods are optiomized for you.

Here I'd like to ask your opinion. When I had a personal trainer, I had a lot of forbidden things. Among them a cottage cheese. I cannot tell you how much I love it - more than chocolate or meat ) But it was on a list of NOT.
What do you think? And most of all - why?
Appreciate your reply in advance ☺

Ok! I'm finally back here @zirochka! Thank you for your patience and thank you for your wonderful question!

In my opinion (keeping in mind please that nutritional advice is outside of my scope of practice as a personal trainer) and as far as how I think about nutrition... I think that your body is going to ask you to eat certain things. It's about being mindful and controlling the portions more than anything. Physiologically speaking I personally don't like to have a life of "no", "not", "restrict", "denied", "deter", "forbid", etc. etc. especially when it comes to things that you love to eat. It's important to eat things that fuel more activity and better results. You want to feel good about what your eating not guilty so, in my opinion, it's more about eating more of the healthy things you should. Filling up on whole foods leaves little space and natural cravings for what's unhealthy for you because the body has a surplus of what it actually needs to function optimally. When your active your going to need more of the right food... not less!

I also think that keeping things simple, doable, and sustainable is the best way to maintain a diet that fully nourishes you while also fitting into your current lifestyle. That's the other reason I chose the #OneMore concept for my next 100 day's of healthy eating.

The flip side would look like this... I'm occasionally tempted to eat something I probably shouldn't or socially I'm asked if I want to drink a beer or two. As @nataliabuchynska said... She sometimes feels like she just, "ate from a garbage" so it can happen even when the body is primed with health food. It's nice to eat a birthday cake on a special day or drink a beer with your friends... So I don't say, "No!" to what makes my life rich... I say, "Yes... But I'll just have 1!" If I'm training for, say a photo shoot, I may pair down my cheat days to 1 day a week... But the best thing about it is that it holds my self-restraint in place while also allowing me to live a "Normal Life" (Whatever that may be! lol!)

So, to the point, I don't think the 1 portion (1 handful) of cottage cheese is the problem you should worry about... It's the sustainability of it all! If your #OneMore healthy thing is a vegetable and you add a portion of cottage cheese on your cheat day there's no guilt and you get to actually enjoy eating whatever your body is prompting you to eat.

Now of course I'm not giving you any sort of nutrition advice @zirochka, as I don't know what sort of personal/fitness goals you and your personal trainer have set, but I do think that #OneMore healthy thing can fit easily into anyone's healthy lifestyles and fitness goals!

And I'm with you... I LOVE COTTAGE CHEESE AS WELL! It's Damn good! :D

But yeah! I hope that what I'm saying here (about how I personally think and how I eat) helps you continue to make the best choices for your health and fitness goals!

Very useful post! As a personal trainer I also try to eat healthy. When I ate some junk food I felt like I have eaten from a garbage😤 but when I eat something naturally planted I feel like it fill me out with health and energy!
And it’s very interesting idea with #onemore hashtag! I’ll stay tuned!

hahaha! I know that feeling... It's NEVER a good one but I'm sure we have all been there! Certainly not the best feeling! That's why I thought it might be cool to try eating #OneMore healthy thing!

So @nataliabuchynska! You are a personal trainer as well!? Very cool! So what is your current professional focus?

Mine is quite varied but I think it all makes sense:

Personally I have a performance goal:

  • Do the Human Flag (For the cover of a fitness book that I am currently writing!)
    An Aesthetic Goal:
  • I would also like to do a fitness photoshoot in front of a fighter jet. I just think that would be so AWESOME! :D
    And a Longevity Goal:
  • And of course eat #OneMore healthy thing (Improvements to my diet are in order if I am to take my health, fitness, and professional occupation to the next level.)

Professionally I'm working daily in conjunction with @mcfarhat and the @actifit project. I have positioned @AdventureReady, #AutomaticWin, and my charity initiative @EveryStepCounts to grow along and support @actifit.

Previously (over the last 11 + years) I have been focused on Body Transformation starting with my own #BeachReady transformation: https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@wil.metcalfe/introduce-yourself-my-beach-ready-story

I plan to continue to transition my @BeachReady fitness business onto the Steem Blockchain so there's going to be lots of testimonials, photo-shoots, and fitness assessments from the past that I will be posting with the intent to kick start here.

Have you had a chance to look into the @actifit project yet? I have some inside knowledge that there is going to be some VERY exciting things rolling out soon for fitness professionals like us! Consider this your official invite! ;)
