ONE OF THE MANY PROBLEMS WE FACE IN NIGERIA : TRIBALISM

Most Nigerians know that "Two fighting" is a common Nigerian phrase. It is difficult to ignore the fact that a significant proportion of Nigeria’s Hausas and Igbos are currently in a bloody clash which have seen many sent to their early grave.

A history of hatred has undoubtedly existed among members of these two large ethnic groups in the country. Another fact we cannot ignore is the fact that not really much has been done to resolve this. A fight that is currently straining Nigeria’s hope for progress and those of us who are partakers in the fight are not bothered or we feel there is nothing we can do.

Nigeria has a massive youth population and 80% of Nigerians who can be considered youths are below 35 years. What i am saying in essence is that most Nigerian youths that are involved in the fight today were not born when the fight between this two groups first started and are only inheritors of the relayed ‘traditions’ that created and sustains these tensions.

Many are unfamiliar with the problem being discussed but once a look is taken at commentaries on Nigerian websites and blogs, immediately the reader can be able to identify significant segregation, revulsions and affinities leading up to bring insults and threats.

Mist times we read Hausa handles call Igbos ‘baby factory products,’ ‘wife-killers,’ they also call them ‘armed robbers,’ and ‘traitors,’ while on the other side, you read Igbo-handles calling Hausa-like names, like ‘Fulani cattle rearers,’ ‘Boko Haram,’ ‘terrorists, ‘ ‘Almajiri’s,’ ‘illiterates,’
They also say that they are the problem of Nigeria.’.

The online hostilities cannot be avoided as they are loud and appear to increase in pitch daily. We have have seen and heard of more Ethnic tensions have been at a highest in years under the current Nigerian political dispensation. We cannot deny that addressing the issues of corruption is being hindered due to this accidental or purposeful continuous of ethnic hunch and frank tribalism.

Lets take a look at this

When the former minister of Aviation, Oduah Stella was accused of corruption when (EFCC) discovered the sum of N2.5 billion in a bank account opened in the name of her housemaid it was so obvious that Igbos especially defended her of her crimes

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi of the Central Bank was also accused of mismanagement at the Central bank, it also clear that a significant amount of the support he got was particularly among the Hausas. So tell me how can a nation move forward with this type of distraction?

There is a difference in the above mentioned cases. The difference is that the Aviation minister, was caught by the media, stealing with hand in pot, meaning she was caught red handed and was embraced by the government for as long as they could. The other blew a whistle of billions of dollars that was stolen by the government and was immediately fired. What we need from that instance is that the response from the public to both cases was clearly tinted with ethnic markers.

Individuals opinions are allowed, it is not a sin and it is healthy. Me as a person I support positive reconciliation for Nigeria’s thieves. I want you to blow a whistle to expose a bigger thief and i can decide to grant you exile-pardon. But this is just my opinion and like @sweetestglo-eu once said to me, ' don't shove your opinion down another person's throat'. I am free to say my mind but I must not impose my opinion on others and use my opinion to obscure justice. As Nigerians we must strive to come together with positive analysis, honest condemnation and a quest for true justice, else, we the poor will continue to suffer at the mercy of a handful of wicked, united cabal.

History of the Tension

The history of the fight between hausas and Igbos is long and deep. So much has happened, political appointments, army predominance by the Hausas and other historical stuff. A significant event that triggered triggered the fight especially among the political and military elite class was the 1966 Kaduna Nzeogwu coup and assassination of northern top elite. It was the first post-colonial episode of serious aggravation and has been viewed by some as a major trigger that provoked Hausa-Igbo hatred.

But one thing for sure is that, as much as much of the past holds episodes of pain, hatred and betrayal, most of us the youth, we have no choice but to move ahead and put the bitter parts of our past of behind us. Drop your weapons and let us settle our differences If not we are just going to initiate another civil war which has already started in Abia. May God help Nigeria.

It's like a taboo subject. I'm 100% Nigerian. I don't believe in superiority of any tribe above another. My great-grandmother, a wise old soul, used to say and I'll love to quote here, "Those who at the slightest provocation wants a war, have never seen a war. I witnessed the war first hand, and I don't pray to witness another." Yeah, she won't get to witness another as she is no longer with us. I seriously wish not to witness one too. But until the underlining cause for these agitations are addressed, we would, sadly, be witnessing situations such as these.

You made a detailed writeup here. Good job✌️

It is so sad my brother. People are loosing there lives all in the name of what. Those people agitating for division. How would they preach unity to their children.

This world is coming to an end

All we need in Nigeria is restructuring , I am against Kanu's approach but i believe a country that is restructured will go a long way, Igbos are being cheated on and we all know this!

I wouldn't want to witness the war either, as history said it was a traumatising experience!

Well written article. This is so sad! I hope the tensions get resolved. Blessings

Thank you

Only one God made us all, yet we cannot live peacefully.we really can not achieve peace with war.Tribalism has come to stay, except God intervenes.

It takes prayers to settle tribalism issues in Nigeria oh.. Is beyond the ordinary.

We have to pray

The tribal war is something i can't describe. I honestly don't know how we got here. May be this was why 'history' as a subject was cancelled to stop reminding us of some past events. Oneness pays my people!

Wish everybody had d same mindset

I pray for a peaceful resolution of the conflicts on your country. My country has undergone such a phase too. And some parts of my country are still in conflict. I hope we could just all find a lasting reason to co-exist without having prejudice towards other people.
