I have been offline for a week, and missed much. @rt-international has opened an account on Steem, and now I again have a dedicated internet connection with which I can view video, so I've now got news media to watch for the first time in a decade, or more.
I'm a bit overwhelmed TBQH. I'm out of the habit of being inundated with such strident opinions LOL. Since I've little to compare RT to (it didn't exist last time I had access to broadcast media) except snippets folks provide of CNN or Fox or the like, I've no idea what the other channels are saying about the arrest of Julian Assange.
Regardless, I am confident that Assange is not a spy, or anything but a truth speaker. I don't think he's any more perfect than am I, or any other human, but I'm not aware of any malicious intent attributable to him or Wikileaks for the material they have published.
I consider him a hero for those actions.
His arrest does not threaten journalists for CNN or Time. They're not journalists at all. They're propagandists, and nothing but lapdogs. You and I, we're amongst the only journalists left in the world today. Nobody at WAPO, Buzzfeed, or Vice is a journalist.
@doitvoluntarily is a journalist. @v4vapid is a journalist. I am a journalist (you might consider me a propagandist, although only for my own views as I do not represent any other person or institution). The arrest of Julian Assange doesn't threaten (((journalists))) at the WSJ. It threatens you and I, @caitlinjohnstone, @elizabethleavos, @reformedmedia, and every single person with an account on Steem that speaks their mind without simply parroting propaganda.
I will be unmoved by the threat. I have paid a price in freedom already for my principles, and will pay whatever price might be charged to me for remaining steadfast. Principles that can be bought and paid for aren't principles at all, and my life has meaning far beyond my economic value.
I hope that most folks I follow will regard this matter similarly. The sooner those that don't reveal their stance, the better, as I have no interest in the words of folks that speak them so lightly that mere money or threats can change their minds.
Julian Assange represents me in his cell, and he will in his courtroom appearances, and in his prison cell when they finish the show trial. Whether you think so or not, if you have principles you will not abandon for threats or money, he represents you too.
Give that thought please, before this crime against us all proceeds to claim it's sacrificial victim who will bleed and die for us. There may be opportunities to affect the process; to head off that sacrifice; to disarm that threat against us. This is not just news about things happening to someone else.
This is what they want to do to us all who speak the truth without fear or scruple for the powerful who profit from our silence. I will not be silenced by my assent, but only by force.
Together we cannot be silenced at all. If we are silenced, we are nothing more than chattel. On this matter we need to stand together.
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced or cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloodied, but unbowed.
Beyond this vale of wrath and tears
Looms the horror of the shade.
And yet, the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate.
I am the captain of my soul.
William Ernest Henley
