NeedleWorkMonday - Learning to Sew with Mom - Our First Projects Continue...

It’s another great #NeedleWorkMonday!! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! While I was away our sewing classes continued and I will share each session with you. We are still working on our first projects. Honestly, by the time I finish this baby bunting it will be a gift for a new mother. My soon to be six month old has already outgrown it and she wouldn’t like to be bundled in it anyway. She is a moving machine and does not like to be confined in anything lol. She barely keeps her socks or blankets on. She takes after her dad who gets hot quickly and would rather do without the extra covering.

Here’s what we did in the next class session...

Pinning Continued

Pinning took up the majority of my class time. It seemed it took ages to get these pieces pinned to the fabric. This above image tells you how to lay out your pieces on the fabric. Some pieces had to be lined up with the fold. The chart below tells you which side of the pattern to pin on the fabric...right side or wrong side. This is very important to follow because certain pieces have to fit together in order to sew them correctly.

So off to pinning more pieces I went...

My mother told me to pay close attention to the darts on the pattern. I had to make sure I marked them (the white chalk squares) so that I wouldn’t miss them when cutting out the pieces...

When pinning to the right side of the fabric I decided to place an extra pin on the outside to help me remember to cut out the darts. I was afraid I would miss them and didn’t want to mess up...

Cutting

Here’s the first dart I cut out. I learned these are for matching up the pieces when sewing together.

Here are three of the finished cut pieces...

The above pieces are much longer than pictured. I adjusted the image size so it wouldn’t take forever to upload.

Pauly Bear

Remember last class my daughter was working on sewing her curves? Well she passed and my mom told her it was time to sew around her bear. She took her time, taking the pins out as she went...

and did a great job! She was a bit nervous but I was so proud of her for going all the way even when she got away from the edges. Here she is all sewn up and ready to be stuffed!

That’s all for this session! I hope you don’t get bored watching my bunting come together because it may take some time. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’ll try and do other stuff in between as well. I would love to get back to my beginning crochet tutorials but it’s been a bit challenging to do so lately. Hopefully soon...we’ll see!

All photos are my own and were taken with our Cannon EOS Rebel T6.

Thanks for coming over!

How exciting for your daughter that she is already seeing curves! I always thought it was fun to pin the pattern pieces on and cut them out. Of course this is a very important step! Babies do grow quickly!! Good luck with continuing with the bunting!

I was so excited watching her sew around those curves. I’m telling you, she’s only 8 and this is her first time learning. I’m 37 and this is my second time “trying”...she’s definitely a natural with this unlike myself. If sewing wasn’t such a valuable skill I would just stick to crocheting! 😄

I thought I would like pinning but once I started I couldn’t wait to be finished. My patience doesn’t last long with it but I’m hoping as time goes on that will change. 😊

Thank you!

Congratulations! This post has been chosen as one of the daily Whistle Stops for The STEEM Engine!

You can see your post's place along the track here: The Daily Whistle Stops, Issue 337 (12/11/18)

Thank you!!!

Your daughter's bear has come along quite well! Just a few more hours and it will be done. Is she excited?
The bunting will have to be a present as your baby will have outgrown it before you finish! I like the colors and look forward to you putting it all together.

Oh yes! It’s actually finished! I’m just catching you all up on each session since I was gone for November! She loves her bear! Can’t wait to show you all more so you can see the final finish :D

Yes it will definitely be a gift for someone. My baby is starting to scoot so I can’t even imagine her in it now. Maybe while sleeping but she gets too hot. Thank you!

This bunting does not look like an easy pattern - and I amazed how much you learned. Sewing darts still frightens me a bit and I am always unsure how to mark/transfer them correctly on the fabric. It is in no way boring to see how you proceed, as you provide tips which are so useful for me (as I am very slow in learning to sew) I remember you will insert a zipper into the bunting...I am looking forward to this. <3
And the bear of your daughter - wow. All the curves... I would perhaps make a robot instead 😆😆😆 She is good at sewing and has perhaps much more patience than I.

I have questioned myself like three times...”why did I pick this pattern?” 😂 It is not easy and I get confused on quite a bit. I actually walked away from it one time in frustration lol. I ask lots of questions and my mom has to explain things over and over because sewing is a foreign language to me. Reading the pattern is intimidating but step by step it starts to make more sense to me. It may take 20 projects for me to get it! The darts were very scary at first until I started marking them to help me remember . It made sense when matching up the pieces to sew. Thanks for the encouragement, I’m glad my tips could be of some help. I’m so nervous about the zipper. 😬 Lol I’m sure you wouldn’t make a robot! She is really impressing me with this. Thank you ~ ☺️

Yesssssss great to have you back and the work looks great !

Thanks dear friend ~ 💗

I look forward to the next session, @crosheille ! It's always great to be able to make something practical while learning and those skills may be useful on your future projects - steem on ! :D

Thank you so much! I’m so glad to know you all are enjoying seeing my journey. I totally agree, I am so excited to learn these new skills ;D

Oh wow @crosheille! This is serious sewing with the pattern and all. Great job! :) I've never sewn with serious patterns like this because I get impatient to figure out which lines to cut :D. I usually would just snip, snip, snip and then suddenly realise, Oops! Hehee. It is so fun that you get to learn sewing with mom :)

😁😁😁! Yes my mom is serious business and by the book. I do appreciate learning all of the technical stuff now so that when I try things on my own without patterns, I’ll have a better sense of how things work. At least this is my hope lol. Sewing does not come naturally to me at all. I’m so glad I’m learning with her! 😊

I’m sure I’ll have my fair share of ooopsies lol! 😂

Thank you!

Love your projects! My grandson is 6months old too...crawling around like he owns the place. They're so fun, I'm sure you are enjoying this time, although I am sure it is difficult to do any sewing :) Can't wait to see everything when they're finished. So great to have this mother daughter time!

Thank you so much! Awww so sweet! Yes they are tons of fun at this stage! Haaa we have to go to my mom’s house. My husband stays home with the kiddos because it would be very hard to sew with the little ones. We really are enjoying our bonding time ~ 😊

So cool seeign how you are working on this as it develops

Thank you! I always think it’s fun and educational when you share the process of your projects!! Thanks for having a look!

Indeed it is great you share the process for those not so crafty it is so interesting for us to see

Looks like you are doing a great job @crosheille. It takes time, but the more you sew the easier it will be and soon you will be making short cuts along the way.

You are right on time with this comment! Thank you! It’s good to hear from others that it will get easier as I practice and get more familiar. I look forward to the day where I know shortcuts :D
