Baby room shoe / 子どもの室内ばきsteemCreated with Sketch.

I was told that my daughter needed a pair of room shoes at day care. I wondered what to do. The one she has from last season is too small, one pair costs $20+ and she needs two for home and for daycare. $50 is a big expense! I could go to see one to used item shops or buy a cheaper pair but I thought it might be fun to make it by myself (as always).

I made a rough pattern from her shoe.

IMG_2275.jpg

The paper is ... an invoice for her food at day care.

Using the basic pattern, I made a bit Japanese traditional shoe -ish pattern. On a cutting mat with 1cm by 1cm grid, it looks like follows. I drew a face on each piece so that I don't cut fabric inside out. Yes, once I did ;)

IMG_2329.jpg

As it was an experimental attempt, I adjusted some things spontaneously such as sewing the inner part a bit smaller. The pattern isn't include these adjustments yet and I have some more improvement ideas. But I think the pattern is somehow usable if you resize the photo with the 1cm x 1cm grid and print it out.

Here are the materials and cost:

  • Outside: Leftover from the sofa reupholstering project ;) $0.
  • Sole: Backside of cowhide or suède to make it less slippy. 12 EUR for A4 size, four soles amount.
  • Inside: Boa. 1.6 EUR/m. I was surprised to see the price as fabric is quite expensive in Germany. There are still plenty of the fabric left after I used few pairs amount.

Interior fake suède can be for vegan/vegetarian option or to save cost. Initially I wasn't sure my home use sewing machine could handle leather but it worked fine with regular needle. I assume total cost can be fit in $10 or at most $15 with any fabric.

I will do "long run test" with my daughter for few weeks. If the room shoes work fine, I may make a proper pattern and sell it ... just kidding. Ya, I saw a $5+ pattern had more than 1800 reviews on Etsy, which means the pattern earned roughly more than $9000! I know it's not that easy to make money. And as I'm a big fan of the open source & donation model, I may make an open source pattern.

Before I started make the pattern, I did a research on the Internet seeing tons of web pages ;) I made a list on my blog, where I think about organizing permanent information.

Other than the room shoes I started an experiment to make frontal neckline lower than backside for a top down knitting pullover. It was initially Miette inspired by @neumannsalva's post about her beautiful one ... it can be too long for this post so I will write about the experiment once I finish the pullover.

You never cease to Amaze me!! I love the finished results as they are the cutest little shoes!! I agree with @neumannsalva, I like your shoes better than the originals!! Wow and they look super comfy too! Let us know how they work for your daughter.

I love open source patterns and greatly appreciate the people who generously share them with us but I also believe in getting rewarded for your work. I know many people that have blogs or sell on Etsy that give away free patterns BUT they also sell some as well. There’s nothing wrong with charging for what you create. So you can give a little and receive as well ;)

One of the reasons I wanted to learn how to sew is because my son was born with extra digits. He has 6 toes on both feet and we have to buy XX wide shoes to fit him. My husband suggested I start making his shoes and so I really appreciate what you have done here. I haven’t start looking into it yet but I think I will ask my mom (my sewing teacher of course) if she can help me.

I’m curious to see more of this neckline adventure! 😁

Thanks for sharing! You have done a lovely job and they look great!

Good advice for selling/sharing pattern. I tend to go for sharing ... probably I'm not professional in this field and a bit feeling guilty (?) to receive money.

Ya and it's great that we can make clothes, shoes whatever perfectly fit to us and our kids. It's not easy to find a perfect one in a shop even they have tons of options.

Thank you for hosting the community crosheille. Happy needlework week :)

You have to go with what you feel is best but do know that your work is quality and I consider it professional in my book! 😉

Yes we have a hard time finding the right ones.

It’s truly a pleasure~ Thank you for your appreciation. 💗

Awesome! I wish I could like this twice

Hahaha arigato :)

Those room shoes look really comfortable and cosy, @akipponn... I wonder how difficult it was to sew as the fabric looks thick.

I personally think that you should make the pattern and try to sell it. In fact,
I'm also wondering whether you can suggest a 'dapp' (is that the right spelling ?) when you go to stemfest, why?
As there's dtube and dlike ... why not devise a sort 'd-need' (not sure about the name though), but a dapp like ravelry where people could sell their patterns ...

It was easier than sewing a sofa cover ... I notice home use sewing machines are getting better and better.

Would be nice there is a dapp on Steem blockchain where we can open our shop. dEtsy, dRavelry ... :D I certain use it. I shall talk about it at the SteemFest as a proposal from needleworker community.

First I have to learn how to make pattern for smaller/larger sizes.

The shoes are soooooo cute. I first thought yours were the ones you wanted to copy, but after reading I noticed, no this first photo shows the handmade item. You absolutely must write a pattern. They are adorable (and I think they also would be great for adults)
And with the fabric.... yes, it is really expensive here. I do not understand this, as it is (perhaps) not different from the fabric which is used for the fashion we buy in stores and the finished clothes are cheaper than the fabric. (I have no idea if there is simply a bigger profit margin in fabric).
But your work was absolutely worthwhile, because your shoes look much better than the original <3
And with the miette.... oh I am curious!!! Did you work with short rows at the neck? I have read that some people do this, to bring the neck up. But I am not sure if I understand the necessity....

About the fabric, ja you are right. It's interesting to compare with the finished products ... ;) I think I'm spoiled from Japanese fabric price. There is a fabric town in Tokyo:
https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g1066441-d2554872-Reviews-Nippori_Fabric_Town-Arakawa_Tokyo_Tokyo_Prefecture_Kanto.html

Another my favorite is kitchen town ;) They are dream towns for sewing & cooking fans, me!

Talking about the pullover, I think it's simpler than adding short rows. I've just knit like Miette and on some point I connected the front. Now I'm suffering from knit knit knit monotone process and started thinking about inventing a knitting machine ... ;) ;)

Knitting machines can be fun, but a lot things they just can't do or only with so much handiwork that it's less hassle to simply knit them by hand.

That's right muscara. I tried a kids toy before and noticed that it's quicker to knit by hand even I'm not quick in knitting ... ;)

Oh no: do not tell me such things, I already believe that Japan is the promised land. I love cookbooks and I love to bake!!! I perhaps would try to live alternately in fabric town and kitchen town. I told you already that I love the Japanese sewing and knitting magazines... the fabric and wool is always so beautiful (ok and the pattern and the photos and the models) But I always thought that these fabrics are very expensive... (I someday got stuck on the nani iro site 😍😍)

Ah you even know nani iro! I also spent infinite time on the website seeing patterns and fabrics ;) I like baking too. It's from my mama. Funny that my bread has just came out from the oven in the timing I read your comment.

IMG_2349.jpg

(Secret: the cooling rack is oven rack(?) + laundry rack ... I must buy one soon...)

They look perfect!!!! Please send me some <3 Really, they look so good. Sadly I love baking, but my results are not always so - ahem - professional :-D
The most complicated thing I made was this cheesecake for our families on Christmas... The idea was to let it look molded and rotten. We told them we found it in the cellar. My mother is a bit exaggerating with the 'shock-face'
IMG_0649.JPG
You see my decorating skills are a bit rough :-DDD

Your rolls are risen so evenly... would you like to share your recipe/technique? And the cooling rack- brilliant idea... <3

It's artist's work :) I should be more adventurous!

That's great, especially the saving money part. And I'm sure many people started out a small business from money saving ideas like this. Why don't you compromise, if you feel uncomfortable about selling the pattern, just charge 99 cents. But I think you should charge a bit for the pattern and instructions and make yourself a little money. You deserve it! A great job!

Thanks inmepyjamies. You comment encouraged me to think about making it to earn a micro income :)
