The scales from pangolins have increased a lot in value, and it is now the most illegally trafficked animal in the world

in #nature6 years ago (edited)

The pangolins (Pholidota spp.) are very strange mammals that have a unique trait – they have big keratin scales that cover their entire body. This nocturnal animal mostly feeds on larvae and small insects, and spend the day in hiding in hollow trees or burrows (depending on the species). It does not really get into much trouble with bigger predators, but when it does, it curls up like an armadillo to protect itself from the attacks with its powerful scales.

There are currently 8 living species of pangolins, and these are found in the sub-Saharan Africa, as well as parts of Asia such as China, Vietnam and India.

The pangolins have many problems in the wild, and just like most other mammals they are facing huge problems due to deforestation and habitat fragmentation. They also face another deadly foe, and that is poachers and hunters. This order of animals is actually the most trafficked wildlife species in the world these days, beating rhinos, elephants, sharks and other species who is known to be smuggled.

Learning more about the trafficking of pangolins

A new study tried to find out high the hunting pressure on the pangolins actually is, and the researchers from University of Stirling focused on the country Gambia. Here the hunting and local consumption of the pangolins is legal, but large-scale killing of them for export is not.

What they found is that scales from the pangolins are being exported out of Africa and into Asia. Most of them are hunted by local people who sell the meat to other locals or eat it themselves, but sell the scales to Asian workers who are living in Africa. Some even sell the entire animal to the Asian markets, since the meat that is considered bushmeat in Africa is in fact considered to be a luxurious type of meat in Asia.

The scientists then further found out that these Asian-African workers who bought the dead pangolins had ties with organizations that were smuggling wildlife products out of Africa and in to Asia. The route used was the same as the ones for ivory, so it is pretty safe to assume that it is the same criminal organizations that is doing both these two things.

Why are the pangolins even being smuggled out of Africa?

The short answer is that the scales of the pangolin is made from keratin – the same substance that is found in whale baleen and rhino horns. As you might know, these two things are also highly sought after in western medicine for their apparent healing properties, but these claims of healing is of course not backed by science. However, some people in Asia believes that the scale can be grinded to a powder and consumed, and will cure cancer and asthma, and cause people to begin lactation when expecting babies.

There are pangolins in China and other parts of Asia, but on this continent the hunting pressure has been higher for the last few decades, so they are almost slipping into local extinction. However, as of right now the populations in Africa is not facing immediate extinction, but it might not be safe for that long if the Asian markets keep paying high prices to get them smuggled into China.

Using their scales for body armor is not really common anymore, but it was apparently very sought after in the 19th century. Only very rich people could afford these things. Image is Public Domain.

Inflation of value in pangolin products

The researchers also found out that the price for pangolin meat has increased by as much as 211 % for one species, and almost doubled for others in only 15 years. This is a much higher increase than the local inflation, so the demand for pangolin is clearly increasing on the local scale. This is of course further increasing the threats for the animals, because now it is more profitable for the hunters to kill them.

Conservation efforts for the pangolins

The pangolin has been well-known to face big threats from the western medicine market, and the IUCN recently reevaluated all the pangolin species to make sure they were not considered to be more healthy than they actually were. This put all the species in one of the categories that were threatened with extinction, and this has of course allowed lawmakers to put stricter laws in place to protect them.

They have also received a protection against being exported out of the African continent, but as this study finds out, this does not really help if they are just being smuggled out anyway.

Direct conservation efforts that benefit the pangolins is also very difficult, mainly because they are elusive animals that we don’t really know that much about. They have a very strict diet, and are highly susceptible to disease, so breeding them in captivity is almost impossible, so breeding programs are mostly out of the questions.

It seems to me that the best strategy for keeping them around would be to tighten the border patrols, and keep them educated about the pangolins, as well as trying to educate the Chinese marked about the problems that the ecosystem will face if they keep buying these wildlife products. If we are somehow able to stop the demand in China, many species such as the pangolins and rhinos will be saved from extinction, but this is obviously very difficult.

Thanks for reading

Thanks for reading my post about the pangolins! I hope you found it interesting to learn about these animals, and why they are being killed and smuggled into Asia.

There has been an illegal pangolin hunting that was reported in the local news here in the Philippines. This animal can be found in Palawan (local name is balintong) and sad to say their population has declined. It was because of the local and international trading and the exploitation of its habitat. I have not personally seen this animal but i think they are cute. Local authorities have acted upon the conservation of this animals. Hoping it could still be seen by future generations.

I have had the pleasure of visiting Palawan. It's a very beautiful island.

Did you see a pangolin for yourself when you visited Palawan? :)

Unfortunately not but I did see scorpions, bats, monkeys, a python, and this large mammal whose name I can't remember

Oh, that sounds like a nice experience!

Thank you for writing to us about how it is in the Philippines, @realnairda! Local experiences such as this one really adds a lot of value to the post :)

Maybe I focused a bit too much on Africa and China in my post, because as you say, they are also facing the same problems in other parts of Asia as well. I'm glad to hear that the local authorities in the Philippines have acted to create conservation plans for these animals, and hopefully the decline of the pangolins in the Philippines will stop.

It's my pleasure @valth. We also thank you for the information you bring to us. Things like this makes the platform more informative and interesting! 😊

Thank you very much for the kind words :)

Another sad story that population of pangolins have been drastically reduced due to human brutality and deforestation. I am not against the poor inhabitant who relies on pangolins for their food needs. You may use them if you have little earning and no other resources, but killing them for smuggling to Asian countries at higher rates should be banned. Again we human are responsible for brutal killings of pangolins for our enjoyment. It's totally unfair. Doforestation is an other big issue which we are facing these days. We should develop some wild life parks and zoo to keep them away from endanger species.

I think this is also how the laws are in the African countries. But the price for a pangolin is so high that people are tempted to sell them to Asian smuggler instead of eating it themselves.

Absolutely agree with you on that matter!

Laws will be there but it's time to show urgency and strictly enforce these laws to reduce smuggling. law making is nothing except to make ourself fool, if we can't implement them strictly. keep sharing:)

For sure! The laws need to be backed up by enforcers such as police, border controls etc.

Absolutely agree. Let's hope for the best:)

Thank you for the great post. It is so informative but a bit sad. I hate people who hurt animals for wearing their furs. I hope that GOD will judge them.

Nature is not dangerous for the animals I think. People destroy the nature and also animals, which live there.

One day animal rights will be accepted by whole people. After I am sad, I want to give you a smile about pangolins. I hope you like this.

giphy-downsized (2).gif

This is the defense position of that as you mentioned above.

Wow, that's a great gif! I didn't realize that they were this fast when going from defensive mode to non-defensive mode. Really astonishing!

One day animal rights will be accepted by whole people

Hmm, maybe. I'm not so sure that we will begin to treat animals more nicely, because there are so many people who don't care about animals, but only care about making a profit from them..

there are so many people who don't care about animals, but only care about making a profit from them..

You are right. Actually, I don't call them as people, they are monsters who can destroy humanity, animals, trees etc.

Pangolins !!!! :D They look so humbled and down to earth. When they are up on 2 feet, they always look like they are about to inquire something... :) It is high time we protect them with everything we because soon pangolins will seize to exist if hunting them down continues . :(

Yeah, they are really cute animals :) Have you ever seen then in real life, @maxwell95?

It is high time we protect them with everything we because soon pangolins will seize to exist if hunting them down continues

Yes, we really need to start protecting them soon, before it is too late..

Yeah real conservation effort is educating the masses and changing the mindset... No consumer means no hunting...
But changing the people's mindset is a slow and difficult process...
They might get extinct well before the real thinking change...

No consumer means no hunting...

Exactly! We could have stopped all these problems if we managed convince people that western medicine does not work.

I have heard the name of pangolins but whats strange for me is their scales are used in medicine in africa and asia.and shirt which is made of pangolin scale looks amazing.
I am surprised to heard that people eat their meat and most suprprising their prices.
Really informative article. You know when i start reading your article its so interesting that i continue to read till the end☺

and shirt which is made of pangolin scale looks amazing

Yeah, I agree. I don't often like animal products, but this just looks incredible!

Thanks for the comment! I'm happy to hear that you like my posts :)

humans are sick.. I won't be surprised if pangolins are extinct in a couple of years

It will most likely take a bit longer than a few years, luckily :)

Nice one
Killing or trafficking of an animal is really a shame and that to for its skin or scales....
There are other animals too which are butchered for their body parts, making rules and conservation won't protect them all...better educating the people can do it, who think that some part of animals body can cure their deadly disease.

Yeah, we really need to have a change in the culture if we want this problem to stop. Even with strict laws, someone will break them, so we need to find a better way to stop the demand.

Totally agreed..👍

Oh crap, another one bites the dust. Poachers should be shot on sight.

Hehe, I understand why you feel that way.

Still, it's important to keep in mind that a lot of the poachers are very poor, local people that do this as a means to get food for their family. I personally believe that the smugglers and those who organize all of this is the ones who should be held the most responsible.
