The Cryptically Patterned Grass Moth

in #nature6 years ago (edited)

This beautifully patterned moth is known as Hednota bivittella. It belongs to the subfamily Crambinae in the family Crambidae (not difference in spelling). They are often referred to by the common name of Grass Moths. Their pattern is quite cryptic when they are at rest on a blade of grass. They align themselves vertically, head upwards, with their wings folded around their body. Of course the camouflage does not work too well when they land on an old piece of wood as seen in these photos :-) These ones are found over eastern parts of Australia including here in Tasmania. However, there are many similar species of Grass moth around the world.
