23 Disney Animated Films Being Turned Into Live Action Remakes
Hi movie marauders! Disney is starting to reboot all of their animated movies. The success of Beauty and the Beast shows that audiences will pay to see the same story twice. There are a lot of live action movies being planned. Some of them are interesting and some of them just seem unnecessary. Let's take a look at all of the confirmed Disney live action remakes:
1. Mary Poppins Returns (Sequel to Marry Poppins)
This movie will star Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins. This movie will include Dick Van Dyke from the first movie! Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, and Lin-Manuel Miranda are some of the other stars that are going to be in this movie. The story is that Mary Poppins visits grown up Jane and Michael (and Michael's 3 children) after a personal loss. Mary Poppins Returns December 25, 2018!
Should this movie be made: Yes!
I would love to see a continuation of the story. I think the casting is very good and I can't wait to see Emily Blunt take on the role of Mary Poppins! The director of this movie is Rob Marshall (Into the Woods, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides). Hopefully Mary Poppins Returns doesn't turn into the flop that Into the Woods was.
2. Cruella
Emma Stone will star as Cruella De Vil in this spin-off movie from 101 Dalmatians. It is set to release in 2018. There is no other casting or plot details yet. All we know is that it is all about Cruella and her evil exploits!!
Should this movie be made: Yes!
I love that another female villain movie is going to be made. Cruella De Vil is a very interesting character, and I think Emma Stone will play her very well.
3. Dumbo
A live action film is being made about Dumbo-the flying elephant. This movie will be directed by Tim Burton, and will have a star cast of Eva Green, Michael Keaton, Colin Farrell, and Danny DeVito.
Should this movie be made: No!
This movie is probably going to have a CG Dumbo. It will probably look ridiculous in a live action format. This is one movie I could live without being remade.
4. Genies
This movie is apparently a prequel to Aladdin that will focus on Genies. We are not sure if it will specifically be about Robin Williams' Genie. This movie is currently in development.
Should this movie be made: No!
I don't want to see a Genie that is not Robin Williams. This movie is completely unnecessary. It is turning a side character into a main character and we know how well that worked out for Minions (it turned out to be terrible). I am not excited for this one.
5. 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea & Captain Nemo
20,000 Leagues Under The Sea is going to be directed by Bryan Singer (director of X-Men films). It is currently in development. A different movie all about Captain Nemo is going to be made with director James Mangold (director of Logan).
Should these movies be made: Yes!
I like underwater films, and these seem very interesting. As long as the story and special effects are good, I'm all for this movies.
6. The Jungle Book 2
This is a sequel to The Jungle Book in 2016. Jon Favreau is coming back to direct this film. It is set to release in fall of 2018!
Should this movie be made: No!
I did not like the first Jungle Book live action movie, so I really don't want another one. The story was resolved at the end of the movie, so there is no point to open up the story again.
7. Rose Red
This is going to be a movie about Snow White's sister, Rose Red. The plot is that Rose Red and the dwarfs team up to help Snow White wake up from the poison apple.
Should this movie be made: Yes!
I would love to see a new twist on Snow White's tale. It has potential to be a very good movie. I am intrigued about Rose Red and what her relationship is like with Snow White. Hopefully this movie will be nothing like the Kristen Stewart Snow White movie!
8. The Little Mermaid
A live action tale of The Little Mermaid is (of course) being made. Chloe Grace Mortez was going to play Ariel, but dropped out of the role. Fans are petitioning for Henry Cavill (Superman) to get the role of Prince Eric.
Should this movie be made: Yes!-But
I do want a Little Mermaid live action movie, but I am worried about what it will look like. Will Flounder and Sebastian look creepy? I hope that this movie will look realistic and have the right look.
9. Tinkerbell
Reese Witherspoon is set to star as Tinkerbell. There are no plot details, but this movie is all about Tink. A live action Tinkerbell with Reese Witherspoon has been trying to come to life for years, and is finally confirmed.
Should this movie be made: No!
I feel like we have good enough Tink stories with her Pixie Hollow movies. I feel like a live action version will look ridiculous. Will Tink's story be the same as the animated film? I just feel like this movie is unnecessary and won't bring anything new.
10. Maleficent 2
Angelina Jolie will reprise her role as Maleficent in the sequel. Apparently the story is that Maleficent's daughter, Malevolent, has a love affair with Princess Aurora's son. Linda Woolverton is the writer, and has written many Disney classics (Beauty and the Beast-1991, Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland-2010).
Should this movie be made: Yes!
I really liked the first film, and I'm excited to see a continuation. The plot of the sequel sounds interesting, and I can't wait to see it played out.
11. Mulan
Live action Mulan will have an all Asian cast and will be directed by Niki Caro. There will be music in the live action version. It is set to release November 2, 2018.
Should this movie be made: Yes!
Hopefully the live action version will be kind of gritty and really show the effects of war. I really want to see a trailer or a movie poster so we know what to expect out of this remake.
12. The Sword In The Stone
We all know the classic tale of the sword in the stone, which is now being remade. It is about a young boy learning how to be king by getting help from a wizard.
Should this movie be made: No!
Movies like this that have a King Arthur vibe always turn out to be terrible. This movie doesn't seem interesting at all and there is no point to remake it.
13. Prince Charming
We are not sure which Prince Charming this will be about. The movie is currently in development, but has no casting announced. I think Chris Hemsworth could be good in this role because we know he can do comedy as well.
Should this movie be made: Yes!
I think a Prince Charming origin story could be entertaining. We haven't seen anything like it, and we don't know anything about Prince Charming. It could even be a comedy.
14. Aladdin
Aladdin will be directed by Guy Ritchie. It is rumored that Will Smith will play the Genie. There are no other casting details, and the plot is going to be the same as the animated movie.
Should this movie be made: No!
Aladdin would be weird without Robin Williams as the Genie. I am not sure that Will Smith could pull of the Genie. I have no desire to see a live action Aladdin.
15. Christopher Robin
Ewan McGregor will apparently star as Christopher Robin. This movie will be about an adult Christopher Robin that goes back to the hundred acre wood with Winnie the Pooh to help find their friends. Marc Forster will direct this film (director of World War Z).
Should this movie be made: No!-But
I love Ewan McGregor, and I think he could play an adult Christopher Robin. I just don't want to see a live action version of Winnie the Pooh because he could look creepy. It's hard to tell because we don't know what this movie will look like.
16. Peter Pan
David Lowery (director of Pete's Dragon) will be at the helm of this film. This movie is set to come out in 2018, and has no casting yet. The plot is still the same of Peter Pan bringing the 3 kids to Neverland.
Should this movie be made: No!
I did not watch Pan, but I heard it was terrible. I don't think a Peter Pan movie is necessary because there have been so many. If this is just another rehash, I definitely do not want to see it.
17. The Lion King
Jon Favreau (Jungle Book director) will direct basically a CG version of The Lion King. This movie will come out July 19, 2019. It will star Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Donald Glover as Simba, James Earl Jones (reprising his role) as Mufasa, and Billy Eichner as Timon. Fans really want Beyonce to play Nala. This film will not have the actual actors dress up as the characters, just voice them.
Should this movie be made: Yes!
We know that Jon Favreau can make these types of movies. The casting is also very good. Hopefully this version will bring something new to The Lion King.
18. Oliver Twist
Ice Cube will star as Fagin in this version. Thomas Kail will direct this film (he won a Tony Award for Hamilton). This movie is supposed to put a new spin on the musical, and will include hip-hop.
Should this movie be made: No!-But
It could turn out to be a cool movie. I just don't get why there has to be a whole new movie about Oliver Twist.
19. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl On The Train Writer) is going to write the script. Music will come from La La Land songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. We don't know who will play Snow White yet.
Should this movie be made: No!-But
The people making this movie are promising. But we have gotten so many bad Snow White adaptations that I just don't want anymore.
20. James and the Giant Peach
Sam Mendes was in talks to direct this film, but has apparently moved on to direct Pinocchio. The plot of James and te Giant Peach is still going to be based off of Roald Dahl's book.
Should this movie be made: No!
I don't think a live action James and the Giant Peach would be interesting at all. I really wouldn't pay to see this movie.
21. Pinocchio
Sam Mendes is switching gears to Pinocchio. There is not much information on what it will look like, but we can assume that its just a retelling of the classic movie.
Should this movie be made: No!
A lot of live action Pinocchio movies have been made, and are all terrible. Puppets are creepy, and Pinocchio looks more whimsical in a cartoon.
22. A Wrinkle In Time
A Wrinkle In Time will be released March 9, 2018. It will be directed by Ava DuVernay (director of Selma). This movie has a star studded cast of Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Pena, Zach Galifianakis, Oprah Winfrey, and Mindy Kaling. The movie is about 3 beings who send Meg, her friend, and her brother to space to find her scientist father.
Should this movie be made: Yes!
This movie sounds very magical and dream-like. It has an amazing cast and director. The story sounds interesting, and I think it will be a very good retelling of the story.
23. Jungle Cruise
This movie will be based on the ride at Disney, where people take a small boat to a jungle filled with dangerous creatures. The only cast that we know about is Dwayne Johnson.
Should this movie be made: Yes!
I think this movie could end up being pretty good. Pirates of the Caribbean is based off of a ride, and is a very successful franchise.
