One Day Data Centers Might Not Need Buildings
Researchers from a french company named Horizon Computing are working on a way to cool servers without a need for a building.
Horizon engineers are looking at containing servers vats of cooling, non-conductive oil. The servers will function as normal and will not rust.
The barrel or container is low cost because it is easy to make and Horizon says the RuggedPOD should be able to hold 32- to 48-CPU cores and operate on an 800-Watt power supply.
Horizon ultimately sees a future where outdoor pod data centers will be fully automated and maintained by robots. Weather doesn't matter - a building-less data pod center can be placed virtually an any environment.
Personally, I've always been surprised that large data centers exist and scientists haven't figured out a better way to cool hardware. This is truly the stuff of the future as large data centers consume large amounts of energy for cooling.
Anything that will reduce the carbon footprint is a good thing.
Perhaps this is something cryptocurrency miners should look into? Looking at Horizon's website, it looks like they offer a few other products.

This is interesting. I've heard of non conductive oil, but this uses it smartly. Though security would be a concern. Leaving without a building around it, people can easily rob the data or servers. Even if there are guards, there is no building stopping the robbers if they take them out.
Ha-ha, so true. I read the article and posted a reply before reading your comment, but that was my thought :)
I think security will be the easy part because you can place pods anywhere and you have more control over where you pick the environment you want to set up.
One of the main reasons companies are still against even cloud computing is because of security and these pods wouldn't have much. These Fortune 500 companies (examples include most health insurance and financial / banking) like the fortresses built to withstand even the most severe of earthquakes or any possible physical attack. It gives them (and the old guard shareholders) piece of mind. Would be interesting if you could find a way to bury them underground, basically providing a sustainable, earth fortress for each of these pods.
Anyway, hopefully they can gain some traction and potential buyers to get things moving in the right direction. It is a great concept.

Check out the Envion AG project. This ICO start-up aims to source green / renewable energy to power mining rigs, which will be placed all around the globe (guarded by machine-gun toting robots?) and promises to pay out over 100% profit, generated by mining, to ICO token holders :) Sounds fantastic.....as in, the stuff of fantasy, but hey, it's a great idea... I just don't know what's to stop people lassooing their rigs and making off with them.
I wrote about another green miner recently: HydroMiner.
I will check that out. I have bought into the ICO PowerLedger (POWR) because it is putting electricity supply onto the blockchain and allowing P2P trading of supply. It has the backing of my electricity supplier where I live in Australia, so I figure it must be legit. It has entered into a 12 month trial with a giant technology multinational in India, Tech Mahindra, to investigate ways to decentralise electricity supply - https://www.cryptoniam.com/tech-mahindra-power-ledger-blockchain-join-hands-test-maas/ . I think it's a great idea, but unsure how it rewards its token holders. Waiting to hear about that, I guess :)
