Market Friday goes to Gettysburg: Civil War Reenactment

in #marketfriday2 years ago (edited)

Market Friday IMG_3982.JPG

The Gettysburg Civil War Battle Reenactment in Gettysburg was held in July. I cannot think of a better way to make history come alive than to experience it first hand. Oh, it was so real! There was live mortars, charges with horses, and artillery shells. I bought the tickets online and headed up to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on Steemit. I have been pleasured by all of you, as you send in the most wonderful posts. Going places, doing things, buying merchandise. I have been surprised by many, not being familiar with the culture and I must say that it has been such an educational experience for me in so many ways and I hope for you also. This week we will be headed to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where there was a Civil War reenactment, done by living historians to educate and recreate the events of that time.

Market Friday IMG_2075.JPG

Have you ever wondered why both sides of the Civil War still fought with rows of infantrymen facing off against each other? One would think that this tactic was disproven 80-90 years previously during the Revolutionary War when the Colonists used guerrilla tactics to counter the advantages of the linear volleys the British presented.

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They will all be in one place!! Thank you! ❤

Market Friday IMG_2073.JPG

In reality, this usage “of rocks, trees, rifles, and militia” (guerrilla tactics)only worked once, at the Battle of Lexington and Concord. The British quickly adapted by maintaining their firing while charging the militiamen with bayonets before the militia was able to reload.

Market Friday IMG_2150.JPG

The fact is, that with the technology of the day, this was still the best tactics during the Civil War. With the invention of the Minié ball (the first “bullet”)and rifled barrels by Claude-Etienne Minié in 1847, the effective range of Revolutionary War muskets (50-100 yards) was expanded out to as far as 350yards. The increased range made “charging with bayonets before your enemy could reload” impossible and necessitated this force on force “concentrated fire” to attrite your enemy.

Market Friday IMG_2107.JPG

The only real option to this battle of attrition was for one side to wear down their enemy (and win!), for the one side (or both) to retreat or to try and out-flank your enemy. If you succeeded in flanking your enemy, you were able to fire down their line rather than perpendicular to them (like the line vs.line). When firing down their lines, it was almost impossible to miss, and your enemy can’t effectively return fire without shooting their own men who were in their way of returning fire. When a side was able to flank an enemy, that portion of the battle was basically over. The flanked side retreated as quickly as they could, surrendered or died.

Gettysburg 3.jpg

The battle involved the largest number of casualties. Up to 10,000 soldiers lost their lives, both Union and Confederate. This was considered the war’s turning point.

I always post this poem down at the bottom of my posts. It is one that has become so near and dear to my heart. I only post the most famous part of it, but, wanted to post it in its entirety today.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

Very nice post!!

Your photos really bring home how massive such a battle was. Of course the true shame is that it was American against American, sometimes relations were on opposite sides of conflict. Truly horrific! Let's hope we never see such division again, but the way both sides are so split today, who can say what the future may hold.

This is one of you epic posts in my opinion. Well done.

War is always horrific. Between the blue and the red, the division is great, but, I am pretty sure we won't be seeing battles between the two unless it is in Chambers.

I liked the reenactment as it a live history lesson and you just cannot beat it. I learned a few things there and was happy to go once again. I have been several times, so I wasn't sure if I would be bored. Not a chance!

Thank you for stopping by and saying hello, leaving your words behind. I wish you a wonderful weekend!

Oh I could see it between the have's and the have not's. Not quite today mind you, but if things keep going as they are trending, between the red and the blue states perchance. Oh yes, many are becoming more militant. Let's hope it stops here soon.

So here is the Old Man's Market Friday. Right on time milady!

I really dislike the unrest between the parties. How have we come so far apart? Well, that is an argument that will never have the right answer or an answer that makes both sides happy.

Yes!! Don't be scared! :)

It is a reenactment and it is always fun! They have it every year and it never gets old. I guess it is part of the history and the old uniforms and guns. It is like a living history book.

You sure got close to the action for your post. I have seen this on TV, but your view is much better! Loving the bare feet on the cameraman :)

Funny you mention the bare feet, it actually ties in with why that battle took place in Gettysburg.
One of the big reasons Gen. Lee went there was to acquire some thing his army desperately needed....
Shoes !!

I never heard that before and now you have driven me to look it up! Thanks for stopping in and leaving your words behind!

#MarketFriday loves you!

!tip

The battle being over shoes is a way over simplification but the quest for supplies specifically shoes played a major part to the start of the battle, forcing Lee to abandon his original battle plan and engage the Union army piecemeal that first day instead of gathering his whole army together before engaging the Union forces
This is one of the better explanations of the "Shoe" story I have found.

I just don't understand war. It's so futile. If this type of re-enactment drives that home, that's good. Great photography and a good way to learn history - and from it.

And here is my cheeky #marketFriday link https://steempeak.com/@fionasfavourites/four-photos-one-day

Well, that makes two of us, Fiona. And yet, no country is immune. I have never seen a war that accomplished anything permanent. or perhaps it is just the fact that I really don't like war. I post on it, from a historical point, but, the more we know about it, the less we will let history repeat itself.

Or so we hope.

WHAT A FABULOUS trip!!
I love history!
I remember the movie "Gettysburg" and we had a friend who did re-enactments and his group was used as extras in the movie- kinda cool knowing someone in the movie.

OMG!!! How cool is that, Dawne!?? @goldendawne

I love history and get plenty of opportunity around here to visit it. (History, that is) It is very cool to know someone who does reenactments, period and the fact that they were in the movie is even more so! I lived in San Antonio for a couple of years and I loved the reenactment that they had at the Alamo. There are so many good ones, and I never tire of them.

Thanks for dropping by and have an awesome night!

Oh, no worries! Everyone has a busy life and this platform has many interesting challenges, it is good to mix it up so you don't get burnt out. Whenever you come back, just know you will be welcomed by open arms.

Now, back to the battle! I love reenactments as they bring history to life. Everything they did was exact, right down to the tiny details. I keep cycling different shots every week or so, as I get tired of the same old picture. LOL

Thanks for stopping by and saying hello!!! It means a lot to me. Have a wonderful weekend!

They do reenactments sometimes here at Kennesaw Mountain, but I've never caught one during the action only just before or after to see some of the people dressed up. My grandfather and father were both fascinated with Civil War history. Fun fact: they used my college campus (Berry College) here in Georgia on a movie and one of the fields was supposed to be Gettysburg.

Posted using Partiko Android

How cool is that about Berry College!

I lived in San Antonio for a little bit. Blink. Okay, I have moved again. :) Anyway, it was like that with the reenactments at the Alamo! For the first few times, I missed the action and finally, I asked about it and never missed again!

My dad was fascinated by Civil War History too! My grandfather was French, so he had other Wars he was interested in. LOL I hope you get to go to one and see it. I really am fascinated in the real life history lesson they are giving me!

Thanks for stopping by and saying hello!

What a fantastic post with great shots that made me feel like i was there

That is something i would love to visit and see someday but till them i got to experience it through this great post

Here is my post for this week. https://steemit.com/photography/@tattoodjay/market-friday-markets-for-the-mind

It was, without a doubt a wonderful weekend and I was fortunate enough to get a few shots that were usable. The action was so much and the smoke so deep... Well, you know the story. It was fun, I learned quite a bit more than I expected!

There is nothing like a live history lesson! It doesn't get any better than that!

I hope you get to see one, I know you would enjoy it. They used to do some in Massachusettes!

#MarketFriday Loves you!!

!tip

A few shots that were usable

You got plenty of great shots, the smoke adds to the whole effect and feel of the event

And it being fun and you learn things that souns the ideal sort of experience ot me, its always good to be learning things :)
I do remember someone mentioning one of these in MA one year, and for sure it is something I will have to watch for and check out

Have a super Saturday

It was the first time I had actually taken any shots, although I have been to many of the reenactments before.

There is so much going on in the historical sense there in Massachusetts, it always drives me back towards home to go to these things. I use this site a lot.

https://www.massvacation.com/events/?stype=2&tid=1&gid=2&sid=...

and this one: https://civilwartraveler.com/october-2019/

I know it is more Revolutionary War up there and Civil War down here, but, they are both interesting. There is so much history up there that it will be worse than a job keeping up with the goings-on, but, I love it!

Have a great Saturday yourself!

I can imagine it is such a fun event to visit the first time or two one would be so fascinated watching it all going on it would be so easy to not even think about taking photos, Iwell I know that would be the case for me

Thanks for the links I will check them out now

Thank you so much. There are reenactments of all sorts worldwide! Depending on where you live, they have those cultural events going on, so people can keep their history alive.

Thanks for sharing this reenactment, Denise. It was a terrible time when the country was divided with brother against brother.

I would have loved to see this and your great photos brought the scenes to me.

In my dreams the soldiers were not as neat looking as these guys. Most were without jackets and had bandages on their heads and other parts of the body.

It was the most horrific time, Jo! @redheadpei

I just cannot imagine how it divided families. War in the day and then having dinner together at night. Oh! I jest, but, that is what it came down to. How could they have torn so many families apart like that?

In reality, your dream sounds closer to the truth and there were many in the reenactments who looked like that, although they mostly came from the Confederate side, Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words! They are always appreciated!

Thank you for your reply.

So nice to be able to be without the internet from time to time! Old way of life is much slower and fuller somehow!

Thank you for the tip!

Cheers.

Always my pleasure!

I never mind being without internet! Much more fuller and calmness without it! :)

This so cool @dswigle! What a special event. We visited Gettsburg twice and our guide was amazing! So knowledgeble, really brought the battlefield to life. This however would be incredible, to actually see humans shooting, retreating and hearing the shots fired along with the smoke. The faces of the people you have captured in the pictures ring true to the faces of those years ago, although I bet the soldiers were all so young. Love the photographer, barefoot and waiting for those long time lapse photos. A rare and special day, wonderful for both young and old. Thanks for sharing with us! :)

Oh, it really was fun. I have been several times and even went to the 150th anniversary one a few years back. There are different ones in different States. I find living history like this fascinating!

I did love the photographer, he was in character for the entire day and made everything so real. The entire event is a learning experience in photography, history, and so many other things. I think in reality they were young (just like the 17-year-olds going to Vietnam) and the very old, defending their side. Thanks for coming by and saying hello!

You are always a joy!

The picture of the little boy is the best!! It is supposed to be hot tomorrow. I just might have to stay in and work on a post even though I have a bunch of work waiting for me outside 🤪

I must have been crazy energy to be part of this. I am sure people are really into it.

And a flower for the flower lady ❤️

Hehe! Oh! That would be awesome, but, I know what you mean! My garden is calling me! I just don't answer the door this week!

People are really into the reenactments! They travel from all over the country, every year! I am amazed and it is really fun!! Up next? The Scottish Highland Games! LOL I love that there is so much to do around here! I never have time for work! ;)

Thanks so much, Marianne! @mariannewest The boy was my favorite too. He made that face because I asked him if it was okay to photograph him. His mom was there. LOL Have a great night!!!! Thanks for stopping by and saying hello!

Hello dear friend @dswigle excellent development of this photo essay. It is good to see that many people and characters playing roles to keep alive the stories of our ancestors

The province of Corrientes- Argentina where I live, has participated several times in battle and gerras to defend our sovereignty

Thank you very much for showing us these beautiful photographs.

This is the fine part of our visit to the artisan fair.

I wish you a weekend full of beautiful emotions.

Thank you so much @jlufer! I do love the fact that it is like living history. What a way to learn, although I believe that it was a wonderful way to learn for young kids.

That is too bad that you have to know of battles firsthand, war and fighting make me so sad. As a country, mine has participated in many, but, it didn't make it right.

I can hardly wait to see your wonderful post which you dropped here! Thank you! I thank you for stopping by to say hello and leaving your words behind. Have a wonderful weekend!

I’ve always wanted to attend something like that. Looks like a blast of fun! The dedication and attention to detail is just insane.

They are so fun. I have been to different ones, this one several years now and The Alamo when I lived in San Antonio. They are always a lot of fun and the people who are dedicated actually travel the country and do it for fun.

Wow!

The details are insane!!! Thanks for stopping by to say hello and leaving your words behind!

Reconstitution of a famous battle, I understand it's an important moment in US history. I learned something, as you wished.
The photo of the child soldier is better than anything ... it's incredible!
My little contribution from the sea ... An Unforgettable Holiday ... What My Wife Likes More!

Well, yes. It truly was!

Slavery played a central role during the American Civil War. The primary catalyst for secession was slavery, especially Southern political leaders' resistance to attempts by Northern antislavery political forces to block the expansion of slavery into the western territories. Source: Wiki

I couldn't have said it any better than that. It is not a proud moment in their history, but, it abolished slavery and did some other beneficial things for the US. Was it worth it? Is war ever? I would like to think that we could learn how to do things without killing each other.

Thank you for the compliment. He was so precious. I asked him if it was okay to take his picture in his handsome outfit. LOL I think he didn't think it was handsome. He was so adorable. I appreciate you dropping your link here and for leaving your words. And it looks like I get to go on vacation! Lucky me!!

!tip .20

Slavery was an abominable thing, so a war for its abolition was a necessary war. Still, it was more than that, I think. I don't think so many white people died just to free the black slaves.
If humanity could eliminate war and the possibility of killing people in a legal way ... then I think we can say that we are civilized.
Again I say, you managed a collection photo. I think you should transfer it on paper.
The holiday is coming! I am very happy for you. Be as long and beautiful as possible.
Have a nice weekend!

I pulled this off Google for you: Slavery was the major cause of the American Civil War, with the South seceding to form a new country to protect slavery, and the North refusing to allow that. Historians generally agree that other economic conflicts were not a major cause of the war.

I agree that if we could manage to put the guns down and find a peaceful resolution to things, the world would be a better place. But, then, what about those people that have no regard for human life? It matters not to them and that makes me so sad. How does one reason with that?

Thank you so much, Dan~! @bluemoon I hope you are having a wonderful time!

I must thank you although you proved me I was wrong. I'm glad I know the truth.
Always my pleasure to read your blogs and to "talk" with you!

Oh, it was no to prove you wrong. In my own way, I like to believe that slavery was so wrong, it was worth fighting against it. But, at what cost? Slavery did end, but, the lives lost along the way.

Le sigh.

Always a pleasure to talk to you!

I known you don't but you wanted to tell me the opinion of historians.
Of course slavery was wrong. I have always been with the Nordics (in movies) ... although the Southerners were presented as aristocrats.

In the upper part of the South, there was, what they presented as an aristocratic gentry, generation upon generation of whom had grown up with slavery, held a privileged place in society.

While that was not the Northern view or my view either, it is part of this thing called history. We can't change it.

I live in Gettysburg and haven't been to a reenactment in years. This was an awesome post, and I learned a couple of things, which makes it even more awesome.

Thank you so much and I have been going for a few years, ever since I moved to the DC area. I loved learning through the living history of the reenactments.

They do it so well, it is so real in so many ways and it is always a wonderful event. Who knows? I may see you there one day! Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words. Much appreciate!! Have a most aweesome night!

Do they do this every year for the tourists? Looks so real....

Every year on July 4th, the anniversary date of it. It does look real and probably tomorrow sometime or Sunday I am going to post a blog where it shows their camps and life when they weren't shooting at each other.

I find it fascinating to learn through living history such as reenactments. Thank you for stopping here and leaving your words. Have a wonderful day!

Those are cool pictures. I would like to go to one of these sometime. They just don't happen out there on the west coast.

Thank you @stever82! It is definitely one of those Northeastern things. We are so oooold on this side of the country. :)

I have never seen this type of reenactment. Yeah, we also have something happens here but surely not this type of huge arrangement.
Great pictures, so much to see.

It is an annual event and very popular as it is like a living history book that you can learn from firsthand. Thank you for stopping by and for saying hello! I hope you have a most wonderful day!

Here's my entry for this week Wienna - Part 8 - The Ferstel Passage - Part I.

See you next week for part 2 with s very interesting craft shop :)

I do like the reenactments if only for the living history lesson it provides. Many things I learn from these things, small things usually not worth mentioning in the history books. So, I find them fascinating.

Thank you for participating and for spending that time putting these posts together. I appreciate that you drop the link here! I wish you the most wonderful weekend!

It is pretty cool that people are really into these re-enactments! I'm always a bit confused by it though... are there umpires who decides who has been hit?

No, it is not a contest. They are so close in range, it is easy to figure out if you have been hit.

They really ARE into them and I am always amazed! It is more like watching a stage play than anything else, I guess that would be a way to explain it.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great night!

Aqui mi visita para saludarla amiga, feliz noche y un lindo amanecer de Domingo

Thank you! Have a great day!

What an interesting post Lady Denise and I will have to read it later.
We are struggling here with the internet feed and I can only get in for a few minutes before it bombs out.
Hope this one goes through.
Have a great Sunday my friend.
Blessings!

Oh, yes!! Do you have rolling blackouts again?

I hope your problems with the internet clear up someday soon. We need to get your posting in! :)

Have a blessed Sunday, Stephen!

Not black-outs Lady Denise, but a crooked internet service provider. We bought a 200 gig data package from them and on Friday the service was very slow. Yesterday we had internet in spurts and today nothing.
Of course they have many excuses why their service is down, but one guy was honest and told us that they had too many users on their their signal tower and that the tower was choking the feed.
Cost us to go and buy a temporary data package from one of the better, but more expensive providers.
At least we are back up now and I will tackle the managers of the old service this coming week to sort things out.
Blessings!

I never seen this in person plus don't have any experience about it.. Always read on the books and watched documentaries...

This is like a living history lesson! I have learned small things that I might have otherwide mot have known. It algo had a place where they had their camp, giving me insight on how they lived during war

I do not like war, but, I do like history. Thank you for stopping in and saying hello, leaving your words behind you.

View or trade BEER at steem-engine.

Hey @dswigle, here is a bit BEER for you. Enjoy it!

So true, pictures, paintings, words
You know... but not really ....
What is that sad poem at the end?

one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

I read that bit... and it was sadddd

eveywhere

It is a poem by a woman named Warsan Shire. I credited her with it and she is from a worn-torn African country.

War is so saddddd. Indeed.

Thanks for stopping by and saying hello!

!tip

It is and even sadder when you know it still goes on in this day and age...

I do like dropping in on your posts...

Any war in my mind is just crazy but if i was at war then in those days i wouldn't be standing in the line of fire you might as well just shoot yourself a be done...lol...i would have put a ring of fire around the enemy so they couldn't get out and hammer them down with bowen arrow's like the Romans did that's the Italian coming out of me now...hehe 🤣

It is interesting to dive at that time and those events. You can feel the emotions of those heroes.
It is wonderful! :-)
