People with this thinking will become poorer

in #life6 years ago (edited)

Last night, I read a true story shared by others:

When she was young, her family was very poor. Once, she followed her mother to the market to buy some vegetables and she saw a basket of mango on the side of the stall.

It was the first time that she had seen the brightly colored tropical fruit and touched it out of curiosity.

The stall owner saw it and told her not to touch it. Her mother immediately slaps her in the face, and then she left with a wailing cry.

On the way home, her mother told her: If I didn’t do so, the stall owner will say that the mango spoiled because you touched it, and will ask you to buy it. That's a lot of money, you can buy lots of vegetables with that money. If I hit you, the stall owner won't be able to say anything.

The experience of poverty has brought her great influence. Even when she grew up, she would move away from the mangoes.

The impact of poverty on a person is really terrifying.

What is more frightening is that the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer. Some people can never get rid of poverty in their life.

Why do people become poorer?

Recently I read a book, "Poor Economics: A Radical Rethinking of the Way to Fight Global Poverty", the two authors examined the lives of poor countries and their corresponding choices, and I finally got a little inspiration.

Poor people information sources are scarce, they are easy to believe in false knowledge.

Many people think that the shortage of food is the main cause of poor people's inefficiency and poverty.

Parker, who lives in Indonesia, is over 40 years old, can’t work for most of the job that needs strength, and has not enough knowledge and experience to qualify for a higher skilled job.

He and his wife have 13 children, in order to survive, the wife can only work, while the eldest son, although has good grades, need to drop out and work at construction site.

And Parker himself, depends on the government's relief, four days a week, they eat two meals a day, the remaining three days, only eat one meal a day.

Parker blames his poverty to the lack of enough food. He was weak and unable to work because he had not enough to eat, and the depressed mood diminished his will and he could no longer think about how to solve the problem.

So if the poor have enough money to buy food, will they be able to eat more, increase production capacity and get out of poverty?

In two regions of China, the author randomly selected some poor families who had not enough food to do the experiment.

The results show that poor families, even if they have enough subsidies to buy food, they don’t know how to buy them properly.

Poor people do not have basic nutrition knowledge, they choose food, the main consideration is not whether the price is cheap, nor is there no nutritional value, but based on the good taste.

Poor families need to buy less on expensive sweets and processed food, buy more leafy vegetables and coarse grains, which can get higher nutrients and energy, so as to improve the efficiency of work, but also rich surplus. However, they did not do so.

This is also true in the case of health. Many poor people believe that the direct delivery of drugs to the blood to make the disease better, so they are very willing to inject.

And the abuse of antibiotics, steroids will not only make us ages faster, but also lead to shortened life expectancy.

What we can learn from this is that the lack of knowledge and the occlusion of information often make people unable to make correct judgments.

The poor are short-sighted and refuse to plan, focusing only on current entertainment

In Koyambedu, India, live in a group of poor small traders.

Every morning, they would borrow 1000 rupees from the rich and then stock in, sell it for 1100 rupees, and at night they would return 1050 rupees to the rich. In other words, they earn 50 rupees a day.

In fact, as long as the traders do not spend the 50 rupees, left 5 rupees a day for the next day of purchase, because of compound interest, they only need 50 days, they do not have to borrow the capital of 1000 rupees, their income will be increasing.

However, no trader would do that, and they would repeat the act of borrowing money every day.

The poor are often short-sighted, fearful of the unknown, refusing to change, and therefore repeat the wrong choice.

In a remote mountainous area of Morocco, the author met a poor man named Aucha Mbak.

The author asked him if he has more money, what he would use it for.

He said it would be used to buy more food.

The author then asks, if there is even more money, what will you buy.

He replied that it would be used to buy more delicious food.

However, when the author visited his family, he found that his home was not destitute and had a television set. "Television is more important than food," he said with a smile.

The poor would rather not have enough to eat, but willing to save to buy a television set, not to gain knowledge, but to make their lives a little less boring.

Not only that, the poorer areas, the more they spend on weddings, dowry, funerals and other activities. India's mothers will start saving for their 8-year-old daughter for 10 years or more, while in South Africa, some families would rather have their children drop out of school and have a grand funeral.

Why don't they save that money and invest in a place where they can really get more income and better off?

Because the poor do not believe that their lives will change, they do not take the time to make a complex change plan. So they just focus on the entertainment of the moment and make the current day less boring as much as possible.

In view of ourselves, how many people will leave the easy things to today's self, and leave the difficult things for tomorrow? Even more so for the poor.

Poor people don't like to take precautions, lack insurance awareness

The lives of the poor are fraught with risks, and a bad mutation is likely to have disastrous consequences.

When the poor themselves or their loved ones get sick, the poor have to leave their jobs and lose their sources of income. Because the poor are not like the rich, have their own money system, when the rich stop working, and they will not lose their income, the poor are likely to bankrupt.

However, the poor have little awareness of prevention. In terms of health, the poor often spend their money on expensive treatment, not on cheap prevention.

From vaccines to healthy foods and oral rehydration by doctors, these are low-cost but life-saving precautions, but the poor do not see the importance of these.

In terms of insurance, the poor are not very knowledgeable about the concept of insurance, and secondly, insurance needs to pay a certain amount of money in advance to secure a future life, yet the poor are often impatient and don't like to take precautions.

When the poor suffer from the risk of losing all their property, or even on the way to borrow usury, they will lose hope and feel that there is no way out, which will greatly reduce the self-control needed to tide over the difficulties. And stress can make the poor depressed, more difficult to concentrate, reduce efficiency, which is a vicious circle.

A person's true sense of security does not come from the fulfillment of what is present, but from the anticipation and control of the unknown risk.

The poor do not pay attention to education

The poor pay less attention to education, and they feel that there are not many real benefits from education.

There are many children of rich families, even without any talent, can receive more education, and gifted poor children, it is very likely to be deprived of the right to education.

Fertility and education have become a way for the poor to withstand future risks.

The author visited a poor man named Park Su, who had a large family of nine children. The reason why there are so many children, not because of lack of self-control, but he did not know out of the nine children, who will be able to give him the pension.

He sees education as a lottery, not as a safe investment. At the same time, he believes that raising these nine children has led to his poverty.

The educational outlook of the poor is distorted. School is either relegated to a worthless or used as a lifeline to change destiny. This kind of educational concept distorts the immature mind of most children, which makes many children choose to escape and go to the road of making a living prematurely.

Due to short-sighted, the poor do not see the importance of education to children. Most of the children who drop out of school are engaged in the most humble and lowest paid jobs until poverty becomes a fate and life is hard to reverse.

This society is really unfriendly to the poor.

The poor are burdened with too many burdens in their lives, and some markets that serve the poor are fading away.

The lack of access to information channels has deprived the poor of their opportunities to escape poverty, and the neglect of basic education, the premature drop-out children, has led the next generation into a whirlpool of poverty.

Poor self-control and unplanned short-sighted, make poverty the norm in the lives of the poor.

Poverty is both a cause of poverty and a result of poverty.

Poverty is not terrified, what’s terrified is that you do not know why you become poorer.

Environment is a big impact on any one's life. For instance, a child grows in a rich affluence environment will always want to replicate the type of life he or she grew up in, the reverse is the case for an unfortunate child growing up in poverty environment; every parameters of his or thought boils down to poverty ways of doing things, he or she believes life is all about the type society he or she lives in or grew up in. It takes thinking out of the box for such persons to succeed especially when he or she leaves their environment for a better one. Another factor that breeds poverty is mindset of an individual if such person decides to get out of poverty,it takes determination, getting the right plan/advice or technique, right environment, government policies, right workable knowledge.
Most rich folks weren't born into rich families but just the right plan(s) or environment and Idea; off they are out of poverty. Interestingly, with right government policies China has been able to pull out millions of its citizens out of poverty. However, when People are short sighted as you have said in this post and lack ideas, not innovative, poverty will still gain upper hand. Good post @walkinharmony very informative and well written.
