Turning My Life Around (again, LOL) - Standing Up for Myself

in #life6 years ago

When all the while

I could have been facing this way.....

ViewIMG_20180315_1447366.jpg

Why? Oh, why

was my desk facing this way?

Around1IMG_20180315_1213495.jpg
I mean, have you got no soul @onceuponatime???

And why was I sitting

12, 14, sometimes 18 hours a day

when I knew damn well that so much sitting

was bad, bad, bad for my health?

silhouette-3120378_640.png

Yes, I had seen lots of the warnings,

but kept pushing them to the back of my mind.

Here's one example:

"We all know we need to be more active, but there is increasing evidence that we also need to spend less time sitting down.
To reduce our risk of ill health from inactivity, we are advised to exercise regularly – at least 150 minutes a week – and reduce sitting time.
Studies have linked excessive sitting with being overweight and obese, type 2 diabetes, some types of cancer, and early death.
Sitting for long periods is thought to slow the metabolism, which affects the body's ability to regulate blood sugar, blood pressure and break down body fat.
Many adults in the UK spend more than seven hours a day sitting or lying, and this typically increases with age to 10 hours or more.
This includes watching TV, using a computer, reading, doing homework, travelling by car, bus or train but does not include sleeping."

https://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/fitness/Pages/sitting-and-sedentary-behaviour-are-bad-for-your-health.aspx

and another:

Yes, sitting too long can kill you, even if you exercise

(CNN)Take a movement break every 30 minutes, say experts. No matter how much you exercise, sitting for excessively long periods of time is a risk factor for early death, a new study published Monday in Annals of Internal Medicine found.

There's a direct relationship between time spent sitting and your risk of early mortality of any cause, researchers said, based on a study of nearly 8,000 adults. As your total sitting time increases, so does your risk of an early death.
The positive news: People who sat for less than 30 minutes at a time had the lowest risk of early death.

Finally I decided to do something

that I had been thinking about for a very long time.
I was going to get myself a stand-up desk and

turn my life around!!!

and I might just as well get a decent chair too
while I was at it :-)

Around2IMG_20180315_1215062.jpg

A new chair you say, @onceuponatime?

woman-3191629_640.png

Sorry for that.

Sometimes @twiceupontime disrupts my train of thought :-)

In Athens, the first store of IKEA opened in April 22, 2004 in the commercial park of Athens International Airport while the second store opened in close proximity to the city center in March 2008.

Eureka!

IKEA SKARSTA Sit Stand Desk Review:

Hey, it looked a little better
on the cover of the catalogue.......

Around5IMG_20180315_1300461.jpg

Do these look like a desk to you?
Nope, me neither!

Despite having read The Old Dog's warnings

about reading instructions to the end
before beginning to undertake something,
https://steemit.com/treetuesday/@kus-knee/the-old-dog-presents-the-mean-teacher-and-the-burled-wood-contest-winners
I at times find myself to be
completely impervious to good advice :-)

And so I had to start over a couple of times
before finally getting to this stage:

Around3IMG_20180315_1218058.jpg

It is a good thing

that I started by assembling the chair

ChairIMG_20180314_1510427.jpg
(which actually went together pretty easily)

before attempting the stand-up desk, which, as I said,
I had to start over again (ie. disassemble)
more than once before I finally got to this:

Around4IMG_20180315_1221037.jpg

black-line-divider-clipart-divider-clip-art-9000_2500.jpg

But one last frustration awaited me!

Rod1IMG_20180315_1620379.jpg

The crank that is needed to raise the desk
from sitting to standing position and back

was bent!!!!!

Rod2IMG_20180315_1620142.jpg
and won't fit into the mechanism.

And so I am considering rage-quitting Steemit!!!

not that my FRUSTRATION has anything to do with steemit mind you,
just that is what all the COOL Kids seem to be doing these days
(taking out their frustrations on steemit)

And who doesn't want to be cool?

black-line-divider-clipart-divider-clip-art-9000_2500.jpg

ouzo and out
@onceuponatime

Sort:

I am delighted that you have a new perspective. Clearly, an improvement. BIG improvement.

I also have new-found admiration for you NOT rage-quitting while assembling IKEA furniture. Because it requires a whole set of engineering skills that only come naturally to people who are genetically Swedish. I say this, having assembled an entire IKEA kitchen once. Subsequently I built a tree house for my cat with the leftover bits. Then again, maybe the instructions in Greek are better...

"When together, it affixes from the under while wrench (a-4) by the left hand, and has opening by circle of the right hand to the thumb at the last moment. When laying together, it holds accurately with the crease."

That was just to open the box.

May you enjoy your standing view, good sir!

You had "left over bits" from IKEA assemblages? NOW THAT IS INTERESTING!!!!

Very healthy and massive stuff espacially the drawing stuff i love that sort of drawings in which u have to connect parts after seeing the diagram

I quit Steemit three times this year and I feel great!

Yup, you sure taught us a lesson :-)

Taking breaks is healthy. I'm back but I need to slow down a bit. I burn myself out far too often. I'd probably fall asleep standing at one of those fancy desks. That's a good way to break a neck.

Well, I hope you "break a leg" (in your career), not a neck.

I'd like to break both of them before I ever consider retiring once and for all.

good work and nice post bro.

Your post has been featured in issue #2 of the MAKE IT HEALTHY PROJECT MAGAZINE. Many thanks for your contribution, and keep the great posts coming! :-)

Thank you. I am honored!

Great post! A good reminder for those of us who earn our livings from a chair. Even though I spend my mornings in the gym, I try to take a walk for at least a mile later in the day each day. It clears my head and helps me find new inspiration as well. On the crank, find something heavy, with a small enough opening to slip that into, and gently apply pressure on that long crank handle. If you're careful, it should straighten, there's enough leverage. I spent a lot of my life fixing things for a living, in addition to my writing and theatrical pursuits. I hope that helps, nothing as frustrating as assembling a piece and finding a problem. Good luck!

so much said about

overweight and obese, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and early death, slow metabolism, blood sugar, blood pressure, body fat.

i am a dentist , so i will say from a dentists point of view... the more u sit, the more coffee u will have and less tooth brushing u will do... that makes ur teeth get cavities and since u sit for around 18 hrs a day means u cant visit a dentist too... that means the cavity will destoy all ur teeth and soon u will be teethless... being teethless means u will start having wrinkles on face and start looking old... that is if ur of the age u will look 60... OMG... u r 60s means u just have very few time left ... i will say u should enjoy ur remaining time as much as u can... take care bro :p

ROFL

I am guilty of all of the above :-)

haha... Did i tellu about Implants... weelll the implant will make a 60 yr old look like a 30s.... So my bro dont worry u have ample time ... time for experiment ... dont worry .. :)
)

Send me your brochure :-)

Really like your style, @onceuponatime. Only IKEA stuff I've bought is from the charity shop so someone else has already done the heavy lifting.

I've just started a series on how to fix your posture, screen set-ups and treat your own neck & back pain.

Part 1: https://steemit.com/health/@marianneyardley/pain-from-computer-use-self-help-techniques-and-guidance-for-pain-relief-and-comfort

Part 2: https://steemit.com/health/@marianneyardley/are-your-computer-screen-angle-problems-causing-muscle-pain-guidance-for-pain-relief-and-comfort

Great to see you seein the light. And holy amazeballs, what a view! ;)

Oh, good. The charity shop didn't make you assemble them again!

@onceuponatime,
Due to busy life I decided to quite STEEMIT few times back, but at the end I am forced to leave my job :D
So, I think I need to buy this chair! I agree I am sitting more than 18 hrs a day! Sometimes it might be 20 hrs :/
I think it's time to change this daily routine! Thanks for highlighting this valuable thing!

Cheers~

"Stand up" for steemit!

Damn...never knew sitting could hurt this bad. I have been a big fan of sitting. I am not obese but I hate standing. Always got the cramp while standing so most times I prefer to sit or just lie down.

Well this piece talks extensively on the effects of excessive sitting...I think I suffer from excessive lying down. Hope it has no side effect

Excessive lying down is known to lead to premature dandruff. Please be careful!

Hahahahahahahahahhahahahha you are too incredibly funny! What!!!!

Giving the much time to rest can also harm the body. Butthese chairs can be comfortable

I have always found Butthese Chairs to be some of the most comfortable ever made :-)

Really need some like those for my Grandpa
