Lord Spamalot und die Schwulen Engländer – Wie man kulturelle Unterschiede überwindet

Ich erinnere mich noch sehr gut…

Es war im Jahre 2005 als ich mit meinem Amharischkurs zu einer Studienreise in Äthiopien war. Wir waren in einem arabischen Lokal essen und ich wollte meine wenigen stolzen Amharisch-Kenntnisse unter Beweis stellen. Als mir der Kellner meinen Teller Reis mit gegrilltem Fleisch servierte und sich entschuldigte, weil ich der Letzte war, der sein Essen bekommen hat. "'Tschiggr Yellem" sagte ich und wollte damit sagen "Kein Problem".
Als sich das halbe Lokal vor Lachen die Bäuche hielt wurde mir klar, dass ich wohl nicht das gesagt hatte, was ich eigentlich sagen wollte.

Kleiner Phonetik-Exkurs:

Im Amharischen gibt es einen Unterschied zwischen tsch und 'tsch. Man nennt den Laut "'" Ejektiv. Dabei handelt es sich um eine andere Art von Luftstrom-Mechanismus. Man unterscheidet in der Linguistik zwischen pulmonalem und nicht-pulmonalem Luftstrom. Pulmonaler Luftstrom ist die Art der Lauterzeugung, wie wir sie regulär kennen. Nicht-pulmonaler Luftstrom kann man wiederum in velarischen Luftstrom, die bekannten afrikanischen "Klicklaute", und glottalen Luftstrom, die sogenannten Implosive und Ejektive unterscheiden. Zurück zu unserer Situation im Restaurant…

Anstelle von "Tschiggr Yellem", wie es richtig gewesen wäre habe ich "'Tschiggr Yellem" gesagt. Was nicht "Kein Problem" sondern "Keine Schamhaare" bedeutet, worauf sich verständlicherweise die anwesenden Amharisch-Sprecher bepisst haben vor lachen.
Ich habe also einen Konsonanten etwas falsch ausgesprochen und damit den Brüller des Tages gerissen.

Das ist natürlich eine witzige Anekdote, die mir wirklichen kulturellen Differenzen nur am Rande etwas zu tun hat.

Fliegen wir 10 Jahre in die Zukunft, ins Jahr 2015

... als Hairou ein guter Freund aus Kamerun bei mir zu Besuch war. Wir waren für ihn Hosen kaufen und beim Anprobieren zog er die Hose nicht an, wie wir das machen würden, sondern hielt sich den Hosenbund um den Hals und sagte mir, so würde man auf den Märkten in Kamerun passende Hosengrößen finden, denn dort gäbe es ja keine Umkleiden.
So kann man es natürlich auch machen.

Kommen wir zur SPAM dieses Beitrags:

Um kulturelle Unterschiede zu überwinden braucht es vor allem SPAM:

Spirit (Geist), um sich der wundervollen Eigenschaften, der wahren Schönheiten der anderen Kultur überhaupt bewusst werden zu können
Presence (Gegenwärtigkeit), um den anderen in all seiner Schönheit und Vielfältigkeit wahrnehmen und achten zu können
Attention (Achtsamkeit), um sich der eigenen Besonderheiten (und Fehler) bewusst zu werden und das wir im Zweifel auch nur aus Geist, Fleisch und Knochen bestehen
Mind (Verstand) um zu erkennen, das wir im Grunde unterm Strich alle gleich sind und alle aus dem gleichen Holz geschnitzt sind. Wir sind eben alle "extended source Energy" (erweiterte Ursprungs-Energie), wie Abraham sagen würde, und daher nichts Besonderes.

Und vor allem:

Nehmt das Leben nicht so ernst und euch selbst nicht so wichtig! Es gibt wichtigere Dinge am Ende der Galaxis als sich mit deinem Ego herumzuärgern!

Zum Schluss noch ein praktischer Tipp von James T. Kirk: "Notiz an die Küche: Kein romulanisches Ale mehr ... bei diplomatischen Empfängen ...!"

I still remember very well ...

It was in 2005 when I was on a study trip to Ethiopia with my Amharic course. We were dining in an Arabic restaurant and I wanted to prove my few proud Amharic skills. When the waiter served me my plate of rice with grilled meat and apologized because I was the last one to get my food. "'Chiggr Yellem," I said, meaning "no problem".
As half of the pub held their bellies with laughter I realized that I had probably not said what I wanted to say.

Little Excursion in Phonetics:

In Amharic there is a difference between ch and 'ch. The sound "'ch" is called ejective. It uses another type of airflow mechanism. In phonetics there is the distinction between pulmonary and non-pulmonary airflow. Pulmonary airflow is the type of sound production that we normally use. Non-pulmonary airflow can be differentiated into velar airflow, the well-known African "click sounds", and glottal airflow, the so-called implosive and ejective. Back to our situation in the restaurant ...

Instead of "Tschiggr Yellem", as it would have been correct I said "'Tschiggr Yellem". What does not mean "no problem" but "no pubic hair", which is why the surrounding Amharic speakers were laughing in their pants.

This is of course a funny anecdote, which has only marginally to do with real cultural differences.

Let's fly 10 years into the future, 2015

... when Hairou, a good friend from Cameroon, came to visit with me. We went out to buy pants for him and instead of trying them on, as we would do, he held the waistband around his neck and told me, you would do like this to find fitting pants in the markets of Cameroon, because there were no dressing rooms.
Of course, why not doing it that way.

Mind: to realize that we are basically all the same bottom line and all are carved from the same wood. We are all "extended source energy", as Abraham would say, and therefore nothing special.

And especially:

Do not take life so seriously and not so important to yourself! There are more important things at the end of the galaxy than aggravating your ego!

At last a practical tip of James T. Kirk how not to do it: "note to the galley, Romulan ale no longer to be served at diplomatic functions!"

Je me souviens encore très bien ...

C'était en 2005 quand j'étais en voyage d'étude en Ethiopie avec mon cours d'amharique. Nous dînions dans un restaurant arabe et je voulais prouver mes talents d'Amharic. Quand le serveur m'a servi mon plat de riz avec de la viande grillée et s'est excusé parce que j'étais le dernier à avoir de la nourriture. " 'Chiggr Yellem ", dis-je, significant " pas de problème ".
Comme la moitié du pub avec des rires tenait le ventre, j'ai réalisé que je n'avais probablement pas dit ce que je voulais dire.

Petite excursion phonétique:

En amharique il y a une différence entre ch et 'ch. On appelle le son " 'ch " éjectif. C'est un autre type de mécanisme de circulation d'air. La linguistique distingue le flux d'air pulmonaire et non pulmonaire. Le flux d'air pulmonaire est le type de production sonore que nous connaissons normalement. Le flux d'air non-pulmonaire peut encore être différencié en écoulement d'air vélaire, les fameux " cliquetis " africains, et le flux d'air glottal, le soi-disant implosif et éjectif. Retour à notre situation dans le restaurant ...

Au lieu de " Chiggr Yellem ", comme il aurait été correct, j'ai dit " 'Chiggr Yellem ". Ce qui ne veut pas dire "pas de problème", mais "pas de poil pubis", ce qui est compréhensible, les locuteurs amhariques ont un rire énervant.

C'est bien sûr une drôle d'anecdote qui n'a que marginalement à voir avec de vraies différences culturelles.

Tournons-nous 10 ans dans l'avenir, 2015

... quand Hairou, un bon ami du Cameroun, est venu me rendre visite. Nous sommes allés lui acheter des pantalons et en essayant, il n'a pas enfilé le pantalon comme nous le ferions, mais il a gardé sa ceinture de pantalon autour de son cou et m'a dit, que cela serait fait sur le marché au Cameroun, car il n'y aurait pas de vestiaires là-bas.
Bien sûr, vous pouvez le faire de cette façon.

Surtout, surmonter les différences culturelles SPAM:

Esprit : d'être conscient des qualités merveilleuses, des vraies beautés de l'autre culture
Présence : pour percevoir et respecter l'autre dans toute sa beauté et sa diversité
Attention : (prise de conscience) à prendre conscience de ses propres particularités (et fautes) et qu'en cas de doute, nous ne sommes constitués que de l'esprit, de la chair et des os
L'esprit : de réaliser que nous sommes fondamentalement tous la même ligne de fond et tous sont sculptés dans le même bois. Nous sommes tous "de l'énergie de source étendue", comme dirait Abraham, et donc rien de spécial.

Et surtout:

Ne prenez pas la vie si au sérieux et pas si important pour vous! Il y a des choses plus importantes à la fin de la galaxie que d'aggraver votre ego!

Enfin, un conseil pratique de James T. Kirk: "Note à la cuisine: pas de Romulan ale plus ... aux réceptions diplomatiques ...!"
