Don't do THIS with your Money...
Sitting here on a quiet Sunday morning curating blogs when I noticed someone had left the TV on. I wasn't really paying much attention to it, until appeals for money started to stand out. So, I'm looking up every once in awhile noticing program after program with preachers asking for money. I begin to recognize the so-called "prosperity gospel" being spoon-fed to their viewers.
Selling miracles
This scam involves tricking poor, mostly elderly people into donating a "seed offering" to some television ministry. They promise things like "Send a love offering of $100 and GOD will double it to $200." Having grown up in a religous family, I've seen this nonsense from the inside. There are many elderly people on a fixed income that will send funds to a shady pastor, thinking they are doing a good deed. It saddened me to see this up close as a child and was one of the reasons I ended up leaving the church.
Somewhere out there...
Now, that's not to say there aren't good churches out there, this message isn't directed at them. One method you can use to sniff out a greedy scam is this way: is the pastor spending more time asking for donations and promising prosperity than they are preaching the gospel? If so, steer clear of such a place and find yourself a real house of GOD. Ask yourself if donations are being used to build a fancy, expensive mega-church. You may find more piety and actually learn something about "The Word" from a small, struggling storefront house of worship that will help the poor directly.
Be wise with your money friends. Right now, some guy is selling "blessed water" and showing testimonials from people claiming this drink healed them. Notice, GOD didn't heal them, the magical water did... Somewhere out there is a church that is much more deserving of your support. I hope you find one.

It amazes me that people will send money to these preachers and pastors on the television. It's pure theater. Several decades ago a had a friend who was obsessed with what we called the "crying preacher." This guy could cry on demand for the camera and he was just such an entertainer. Luckily, we just watched in amazement that someone could blatantly ask for money when he obviously had enough. ;-)
We had these vipers in my own family. I was astonished to see how well my grandparents lived while running their little church empire.
They used to make fun of the poor church members at the dinner table, while bragging about how much money they had.
Once you get to "peek behind the curtain" you never look at them the same way again...

It takes all kinds. And there are many lovely people out there who do not lie and steal, thank goodness. We all have choices to make every day. Hopefully we learn from our mistakes sooner than later so that we can make the world and our communities a better place.
