The Impossible Dream

by Duncan Cary Palmer

Goodbye?

Not much good about it.

Common cause
and occasional emails
somehow bloomed
into deep, mutual feelings.

Correspondence:
Encrypted, torrid, raw,
vulnerable, vivid,
ecstatic,
poetic.

Both:
Responsible,
committed.

Situation:
Utterly hopeless.

Saved from
irredeemable folly
by naught but
thousands of miles.

Inevitable discovery
by an unsuspecting spouse.

Silence.
Pain.

Goodbye.

~FIN~

Where's the happy ending?

Perhaps they've been saved from years of endless, agonizing pining. Almost certainly from the collateral damage of destroyed families.

If there's to be a happy ending,

I can only guess that it must happen far, far outside the scope of this story... Perhaps somewhere, somewhen, after the ultimate resolution of all things.

love and pain in 50 words - sometimes it takes less :)

So true. The word "goodbye" itself is sometimes a complete story.

Sad as every farewell. Receive my affections @creatr

Goodbye...sometimes makes me wish there was never an Hello in the first place

Sometimes, yes... );

You have a wonderful command of the English language and this like many of your writings is very nicely done.. yet this one a motif of sadness. Thanks @creatr

Saying goodbye has become part of my life, since I left home at the age of 18 and moved a lot since then. My family is spread over several countries, as well as my closest friends.

In the beginning it was quite tough, but I have learned to appreciate a goodbye as a chance to enjoy the shared time even more, make it become as intense as possible, and never ever leave without a very deep and long hug :-)

Not being together all the time makes the shared moments even more valuable and you learn to appreciate the here and now.

You're right, Marly, we definitely need to treasure the times when we are together.

I, too, have family around the world, and our very rare visits have been spectacular.

And the hugs... Absolutely essential, in both quantity and quality! :D

I love the word "somewhen." How clever of you! Goodbye is often, but not always, sad. Goodbye can just be a stronger version of "see you later." But goodbyes are important. Because if people we love don't go away, how can we miss them? Philosophical question of the day!

Good question and reminder... Thanks, Jayna!

Clever twist at the end. Nicely done!

Thanks. :D

But, the "what ifs" remain...

The what ifs hang around for a long, long time...

wowwww nixe and amazing post
