Renewables> Fossil fuels. We need to start saving the environment.

In the last decade or so renewable energy and cutting down on emissions has been a big topic for debate in politics, science and the world in general.

Our obsession with fossil fuels has damaged our planet in many ways, some subtle and some not so subtle. One thing is for sure, we are killing our planet, and science proves it.

From melting ice caps and rising sea levels to global increases in temperature the effects of man made climate change are obvious.
Yes the earth goes through cycles of climate change, but not on this scale, not at this speed.

Oil, Coal and natural gas are destroying our planet in more ways than one. An increase in population drives an increase in demand and our natural resources are running out.
We have taken great strides in moving towards renewables but its not nearly enough and for some reason it has faced great political opposition. Assumingly because of large corporations filling politicians back pockets in exchange for their vote.

Then again there are times where a news article is posted on Facebook about a coal mining plant or an oil refinery being shutdown and regular citizens are getting angry because of "loss of jobs".
I guess they don't understand if things don't change lives will be lost instead of jobs. A future will disappear not just a refinery.
They won't have much of a world to leave to their children. There's always another job to get but there isn't another planet to get.

Wind, Hydro-Electric, Geo-Thermal, Solar just 4 of the amazing options we have, things that could solve our energy crisis and save the planet at the same time, things that could change the world.
Imagine if every house ran on its own solar, 0 power bills. Imagine if our cars were all electric, 0 fuel bills. Imagine if our air was cleaner, our children healthier and nature thriving.

Places like China play a massive role in changing the world, they produce so much pollution and consume so much resources it almost boggles the mind. They have done very well in lowering their use of coal which has had a major impact on pollution
However, the absence of comparable commitments on other, non-CO2, gases means that total greenhouse gas emissions could continue to increase until at least 2030.

There are few countries doing worse than China but at least they are making some efforts to curb emissions. The samecannot be said for countries like the U.S.A. On 1 June 2017, President Trump announced that the US will pull out of the Paris Agreement. On 4 August 2017, the United States formally communicated its intent to withdraw from the agreement to the UN.
This is a blatant ignorance of the dangers posed to our planet. As another of the world players in pollution if they follow through and continue to ignore the damage being done the effects will be felt globally.

The website www.climateactiontracker.com lists Americas efforts to curb emissions as "critically insufficient". With a leader who is opposing climate change and ignoring straightforward science it is a dangerous path to be taken down.

While it seems as a an entire planet we are moving towards renewables at a steady rate we really need to up our efforts to help save our planet. Things like the Paris agreement and other global initiatives are an important step but we should be looking at things we can do at home as well.
If we cant act fast we will lose some of the most amazing things our planet has to offer. Places like the Maldives are situated a mere 2 metres above the sea level, this means if ice caps continue to melt and the ocean continues to rise we will lose them forever, estimates expect the Maldives to be completely submerged within 30 years at our current rates.

We all have the responsibility to help save our planet. Whether you donate to climate change initiatives, invest in renewables yourself or just take every step you can to lower your co2 emissions, every step forward is a step in the right direction. As long as we ignore the anti-renewable propaganda put out by large corporations who care for nothing more than profit we may be able to save our planet yet :)
