Today I was out for a bite to eat just down the road in Whitby when this legendary guy walks in. One of the best players to come out of our Minor hockey system here.
And yes, I am average size for a guy and no, Rob was not standing on a stool, he really is that big. I am about 5'9". He was always bigger than everyone growing up LOL
Rob was drafted 12th overall by the Toronto Maple leafs in the 1989 draft, as were some of the other guys I played with and went to school with who were drafted 1-2 years later. We had a lot of talent in our town for sports and that is pretty common knowledge around Canada.

Rob's son was with him and I had not seen him for a few years. Luke Pearson is a goalie in the Whitby system, and was just recently drafted to play in the top Jr. hockey league in the world where all of kids want to play - the CHL where Rob and many of my friends played.
He was drafted in the 9th round, to the Ottawa 67's. A legendary franchise that has been around many many decades.

On the same day the Jr. A club announced a new coach, Rob Pearson, the Ontario Junior Hockey League club recognized Nik Coric as the most gentlemanly player on Tuesday, March 21.
Pearson, who just wrapped up a tremendous season with the Whitby Wildcats minor midget AAA team, takes over the head coach duties from Scott McCrory, the team president who guided the Fury to a franchise-record 38-11-1-4 regular-season record before a heartbreaking seven-game loss to the Wellington Dukes in the first round of the playoffs.
With 12 players not returning due to age limit and scholarship opportunities, the franchise is shifting more toward development for the 2017-18 season, it said in a press release.
Pearson led the Wildcats to an OMHA championship this season and had them ranked third heading into the OHL Cup showcase tournament, where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 2-1 loss to the Toronto Nationals.
An Oshawa native who finished his junior career with the Generals, where he scored an astonishing 57 goals and 109 points in just 47 games, Pearson was drafted 12th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs and played 269 career NHL games.
Now 46, he was an assistant coach for the UOIT Ridgebacks in their inaugural season and has spent the past 10 years coaching and mentoring in both the Clarington and Whitby minor hockey associations.

The 1987-88 Oshawa Kiwanis Major Midget AAA hockey team won six championships that season and was home to several players who went on to have distinguished careers in the game.
Coached by Gil Hughes, the team had an incredibly busy schedule, playing in both the ETA and MTHL major midget leagues. The team played 90 games overall, winning 70, losing just 12 and tying eight, while averaging to score 4.68 goals per game and allowing 2.64.
In addition to winning the ETA and MTHL championships, the Oshawa Kiwanis team also claimed the Oshawa Carlo’s Electric Classic tournament, the OMHA title, the OHA all-Ontario crown and the Central Regional Air Canada Cup before moving on to the nationals in Thunder Bay and finishing fourth.
The team also had a very successful eight-game overseas trip to Czechoslovakia in November 1987, winning all four games against club teams, tying two against a national team the same age and losing two to an older national team.
Four players on the team would go on to win a Memorial Cup in 1990 with the Oshawa Generals, and two would play in the National Hockey League. The team members are Alan Avery, Paul Bennett, Dave Bryant, Kevin Butt, Mark Buzminski, Dale Craigwell, Mike Dahle, Jean-Paul Davis, Dave Finch, Jeff Gosselin, Brian Grieve, Bill Lawrenson, John MacKinnon, Brian Mueggler, Rob Pearson, Chris Snell, Dave Somerville, Mike St. John and Brett Taylor.
Team staff included assistant coaches Gary Butler and Jim Blair, trainer Marcel Boivin and manager Dan Walerowich.

I spend a lot of time in Toronto, and although I admit not being a big hockey fan, I support my Canadian friends and family. Nice post man, always enjoyable to get a positive blast from the past!

I was a lot lower on the depth chart than most of these guys, I never played at the level they did - I also played a lot of other sports and some at a high level also.
In my younger days high school and younger I usually played defence and in my later years after HS --- I played both and about 50/50 btw forward/center and defence.
I actually knew at the young age that even when I was on the ice or the ball field etc with these guys, how much of a fan I was, just watching them play while on the ice or the ball diamond or basketball courts etc with them.
They were all a lot better than me!

I wanted to do this project for my 1,000th post and intended to have it finished for the campfire, but it took way longer than I expected and is why i have not posted in three days lol!

I spent nearly 2 weeks in Smashville --- I loved my time there!!!
I was in the rink watching games with comp tickets from friends and hung out with the family of one of the Pred's execs.

The names mentioned in the rest of this post are really something else too, so many guys I was lucky to know, play with, go to training camp with, play ball with, that really went somewhere and were great players and good people too.
I'm young but have an immense love for history, even if that history is sports history and only a couple decades old.
I've known a few NHL players over the years (presently playing and a few from the 70s) but I always find it cool when people have the good fortune to have met incredible people. I find interesting people rub off on others and makes them more interesting too.
We both have had great opportunity to meet so many awesome people.
Anyways, I'm lethargic and tired so I'm not doing great stringing sentences together right now. Been a long day. lol XD

Awesome! So fun to reminisce about when you were growing up and nice to see he's still staying close to his roots. His coaching a local team is so cool for the players coming up - the experience he can pass on his wisdom in playing at the elite level is priceless.

Am not being very energetic today. Still sore from last rodeo with the firepit vines, plus the weather turned cold & windy the last two days. I'm taking a mini break from most everything today. Didn't even write a post. Think I'm going to bed early tonight & see how tomorrow shapes up.

I was selling a house near his parent, like 2 blocks away, in multiple offers, I think the address was 1052 Mary St in like 1991, he was playing an exhibition game, on TV, against the Russians, if I recall correctly.
My offer and negotiations won out and the Leafs prodigy was underway too
