Getting More Sleep vs. Getting Better Sleep

We all love to sleep, don't we? I mean, what could possibly be easier than to just do nothing and let your body get comfortable; and mind ease into unconsciousness?

But it seems like getting enough sleep is almost an achievement these days. We barely get enough time for ourselves in our busy schedules, let alone getting a fulfilling sleep at night.

Our constant rush throughout the day is overwhelming and can leave us tired and anxious. Still, many of us choose to be on our phones late at night instead of giving our bodies the rest that it deserves.

Most people confuse more sleep with better sleep and end up getting the same unfulfilling sleeping experience even after sleeping for more than 7-8 hours, which makes them feel drowsy and lazy.

Getting more sleep does sound like the solution to all our sleeping problems, right? After all, it's obvious to want to have more of what you don't have. But getting more sleep still might not be the answer to feeling fresh in the morning.

You could sleep for more than the recommended time and still feel unsatisfied with the sleep you are getting. The main problem here, is not the amount of sleep, but the quality of sleep.

Studies show that oversleeping can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and even death! While getting less sleep is surely harmful, getting too much sleep has the same bad effects.

So if more sleep is not the answer, then what is? Well, it all depends on the quality of your sleep. Done properly, you can sleep for as little as 6 hours and still feel fresh and energized the next morning.

Cooling down your room, taking a warm shower before bed, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, not using your phone or any kind of electronic device on your bed, applying some lavender oil under your nose, and most importantly, making and maintaining a routine are some of the best ways to get better sleep.

The science behind maintaining a routine is that your mind follows an internal clock according to which it instructs your body to secrete specific types of hormones such as Melatonin for regulating sleep cycles, that help in proper functioning of your body.

So the next time you feel sleepy in the middle of the day, just remember to stick to your schedule and get the most of your sleeping time.
