(En) Travel tip and story - Venezuela - TEK RIVER CAMP, IN THE WAY TO RORAIMA TEPUY by @ubikalo
In this post I will tell you a little about the way to Roraima Tepui, a world famous natural formation in Venezuela.
Roraima tepui is sacred land for indigenous communities, the name means Mother of all waters, its presence rules the whole lanscape.

To reach the top (2800 meters high) of Roraima Tepui there are just two ways, helicopter to the top or 3 days trekking with a local guide.
The journey starts in San Francisco de Yuruani a very small indigenous town next to the main and only road in La Gran Sabana.
The people there is very nice and ready to help everybody, from there te next stop is Paraitepuy, a smaller town 30 kms away, this part of the journey can (must) be done by car, 4x4 preferably.
The trekking starts here, in Paraitepuy. The trekking to Roraima normally is divided in three stages (and 2 or 3 more for the return):
Paraitepuy to Tek River Camp or Kukenan River Camp - 1 day
Tek or Kukenan River Camp to Base Camp - 1 day
Base Camp to Roraima top - 1 day
I will not tell you more details about this trekking, I will do it in coming posts with images and stories.
In this particular post I will write about Tek Camp, for me this place is perfect for photography and it the first place to sleep and to rest for every traveler.
This camp takes its name of the river TEK, a beautiful river with crystal clear water, and big rocks in the stream. Usually is quite, but the constant rains in the area can make it rise suddenly.
No light, no air conditioner, no tv, no cell phone services, no internet, no cars, no modern life except for camping gear and photo devices.
The sunset and the sunrise are magical, the light, the nature, the landscape is breathtaking. In my journey this stage took us about 7 or 8 hours of trekking under heavy rain fron Paraitepuy to Tek River Camp, a total adventure for someone like me.
Our first meal was there, and setup the tents under rain was a real challenge, the exciting of the journey was very high, the energy was inside of us all and the whole group was assimilating the experience that was just beginning.
The small houses there were made in bahareque, it is a building technique with small trunks, moriche and clay, like the ones in the picture. Of course this small houses belong to indigenous community, and the travelers must sleep in tents outside (at least mostly of us jajaja some lucky one got a spot inside a house).
The first day was hard, we didn´t expected a long and winding road with valleys and hills under a heavy rain, cold and hungry. This first day was a surprise for me, I never expected it was so hard.....and I had 5 more days ahead.
The night fell and the darkness covered us.
The next day, 5 am, the sunlight appeared shyly and I went out the tent to see the magical landscape in that place, no rain, no noises, nobody around yet.
In this particular image, Roraima was covered with clouds, it seems to be close, but it is not. we needed 2 more days and many kilometers to get there. In the photo the road is visible like a small light brown snake, that was our route that day....but that is another story, another post.
If you want to know more about this gorgeous place I will leave some links with more information for you:

This trip is not for everyone but everyone should try it, if you want to know how to do it just contac me and I will help you to make real.
Some tips:
You can leave here a meal and dry clothes and use them when you are coming back from roraima, every pound counts when you have to carry on backpack for 6 days in your back.
Leave Paraitepuy early, you will arrive to Tek or Kukenan River Camp with enought tima and sunlight to setup the camp easily and with enought time to enjoy rivers and landscape.
Prepare phisically before this trip, it is very demanding
Be ready for rains and hard roads all the way
Be always positive
Roraima is a sacred land with magical atmosphere and spiritual vibe like no other place, Roraima calls the souls of the persons Roraima wants in her top. Listen carefully and walk to her
