The gold of the Third Reich

$ 500 million in gold, jewels, precious paintings and works of art ... this is the immense lost treasure of the third Reich.
At the end of the Second World War, Nazi Germany was surrounded by enemies. To the east, the Russians, after breaking through the German defensive lines, headed for Berlin, while in the north, south and west the coalition forces advanced in German territory. Germany had lost the war, it was a matter of months and the Russian army would enter Berlin. Hitler was still convinced he could win but Walther Funk, head of the Reichsbank, knew that they had been defeated. Walther Funk realized that the immense riches kept in the vaults of the Reichsbank would soon be changed master unless he had prevented it.
His plan was to load all the gold, works of art and jewels into armored railway trains and hide them in the most inaccessible and desolate areas of the Third Reich. That treasure of inestimable value would have served Germany to pay off war debts and revive the German economy after the end of the conflict.
When the Führer met, Walther explained his plan and on February 3, 1945, under the American bombing, several wagons loaded with gold left Berlin.
The treasure of the Nazis seemed safe ... but the story did not go that way.
Part of those hidden treasures were found in 1945 by the Monuments Men in the Merkers salt mines, over 100 tons of gold, a thousand bags of bills and hundreds of works of art.
In 1999, at the bottom of Lake Topliz, in Austria, counterfeit dollars and sterling crates were found and in 2013 in a flat in the center of Munich more than 1500 paintings were found (Picasso, Renoir, Matisse, Chagall, etc.).
Most of the third Reich's treasure is still hidden, perhaps underground, inside a cave or even underwater.

L’oro del Terzo Reich

500 milioni di dollari in oro, gioielli, dipinti preziosi e opere d'arte... è questo l'immenso tesoro perduto del terzo Reich.
Sul finire della seconda guerra mondiale la Germania nazista era circondata da nemici. A est i russi, dopo aver sfondato le linee difensive tedesche, si dirigevano verso Berlino, mentre a nord,sud ed ovest le forze della coalizione avanzavano nel territorio tedesco.
La Germania ormai aveva perso la guerra, era questione di mesi e l'esercito russo sarebbe entrato a Berlino. Hitler era ancora convinto di poter vincere ma Walther Funk, capo della Reichsbank, sapeva che erano stati sconfitti.
Walther Funk capì che le immense ricchezze custodite nei caveau della Reichsbank avrebbero presto cambiato padrone a meno che lui non lo avesse impedito.
Il suo piano era quello di caricare tutto l'oro, le opere d'arte e i gioielli in dei convogli ferroviari blindati e di nasconderli nelle aree più impervie e desolate del terzo Reich. Quel tesoro di inestimabile valore sarebbe servito alla Germania per pagare i debiti di guerra e risollevare l'economia tedesca dopo la fine del conflitto.
Incontrato il Führer, Walther gli espose il suo piano e il 3 febbraio del 1945, sotto i bombardamenti americani, numerosi vagoni carichi d'oro partirono da Berlino.
Il tesoro dei nazisti sembrava salvo... ma la storia non andò proprio così.
Parte di quelle ricchezze nascoste furono ritrovate nel 1945 dai Monuments Men nelle miniere di sale di Merkers, oltre 100 tonnellate d'oro, un migliaio di sacchi di banconote e centinaia di opere d'arte.
Nel 1999 sul fondo del lago di Topliz, in Austria, vennero trovate casse di dollari e sterline contraffatte e nel 2013 in un appartamento in centro di Monaco vennero ritrovati più di 1500 dipinti(Picasso, Renoir, Matisse, Chagall, etc.).
La maggior parte del tesoro del terzo Reich è ancora nascosto, magari sottoterra, dentro una grotta o addirittura sott'acqua.
