The Difference Between HDD and SSD!!

in #it6 years ago (edited)

As I was Sitting in IT today we were revising some work from last year and then we came upon Hard drives and Solid State Drives, I have since then Compiled most of the differences that I recall and then some extra info that I found on the Internet:

Solid State DriveHard Drive
ElectronicMechanical
No Moving PartsHas Moving Parts
uses less Power than a Hard Driveuses more Power than a SSD
Way More ExpensiveLess expensive
Much Faster than a Hard DriveSlower than a SSD
Storage Capacity is Generally smallerStorage is a bit Larger
Little Time to BootSubstantially longer to Boot
Write speeds are WAY fasterSlow compared to SSD
A magnet can not effect the SSDMagnets can lead to lost Data

A Picture of an SSD:

A Picture of a Hard Drive:

WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE AN SSD?

  • If you are willing to pay for performance then this would be the perfect choice for you!!
  • If you don't mind having limited storage space then this is for sure a good option!

WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE A HARD DRIVE?

  • If you want more Storage Space
  • If you are limited on Funds
  • If you Don't really care to much for booting speeds or how fast something opens

When I was peaking about an HDD having 'Moving Parts', it actually does, its kinda like a pen that then writes on the ribbon to store the data there, whereas a SSD uses a lot of Different little chips to store the Data. The process which an SSD uses is called EEPROM:

EEPROM stands for electrically erasable programmable read-only memory and is a type of non-volatile memory used in computers and other electronic devices to store relatively small amounts of data but allowing individual bytes to be erased and reprogrammed.

(non-volatile means that as soon as the computer is shut down... the data is stored in STORAGE, if it was volatile the every time you would shut the computer off... the Data will be erased from the Memory or RAM)

Lets Just say that because I actually remembered most of this stuff, I would probably remember it in the test, hopefully!!! XD XD XD
