The Guy In The Glass; a famous poem from 1934 that has a lot of meaning for us on steemit

in #introduceyourself8 years ago

The first time I posted this it didn't really discuss the tie in to steemit, so I'm trying once more for the benefit of everyone who reads this

My great grandfather, Dale Wimbrow, wrote this famous poem in 1934 for The American Magazine. He was heavily involved with radio and started his own newspaper, as well as, writing several books and even inventing a new instrument, The Wimbrola. Here is his poem that has helped me so many times in my life, as well as helping so many people around the country that have read it since 1934. I think it also can give us a bit of perspective about the posts that do so well on steemit. Never give up

The Guy in the Glass

by Dale Wimbrow, (c) 1934

When you get what you want in your struggle for pelf[riches],

And the world makes you King for a day,

Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,

And see what that guy has to say.

For it isn't your Father, or Mother, or Wife,

Who judgment upon you must pass.

The feller whose verdict counts most in your life

Is the guy staring back from the glass.

He's the feller to please, never mind all the rest,

For he's with you clear up to the end,

And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test

If the guy in the glass is your friend.

You may be like Jack Horner and "chisel" a plum,

And think you're a wonderful guy,

But the man in the glass says you're only a bum

If you can't look him straight in the eye.

You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,

And get pats on the back as you pass,

But your final reward will be heartaches and tears

If you've cheated the guy in the glass.

In grateful memory of my Great Grandfather, the author, Dale Wimbrow 1895-1954

The Poem has seen a bit of fame since he wrote it...

James Brown performs it:

Great NFL Coach Bill Parcels shares how the poem affects him and his team:

Just remember that if your next post is a hit or a flop it doesn't matter, just know who you are inside, that's what counts
