The Expendables

This is not about the movies with over the top action heroes. This is about you and me; WE are the expendables. Most political leaders treat us that way, even if we don't want to admit it. The economy treats us that way too; we're on the negative side of the balance by which we measure our worth as a society. GDP and stock-markets would spike if we were all suddenly replaced by robots that don't call in sick, never say no and don't have to go to the bathroom from time to time.

Let the truth of that intro sink in for a moment. We've modeled our societies around an ideology that values everything but human lifes. Just look at the reality of our collective condition; there's no escaping the fact that the powers that be don't give a damn about us, the planet or generations yet to come. Trump is a symptom of this dark truth; he rejected the Paris Climate Deal and promotes industry based on fossil fuels in a time when Australia is on fire because of those fuels. He ripped up the Iranian nuclear deal, kills an Iranian general and opens the door to not only another hopeless war in the Middle East, but also to Iran manufacturing nuclear weapons. He and his ilk oppose a single payer healthcare system that would save many thousands of lifes and would give thousands the FREEDOM to finally go look for a job they actually want, instead of having to hang on to a lousy job with good healthcare benefits, let alone the freedom to start their own business without having to worry about their own healthcare or that of their employees.

In all these examples we value money over life. This is infuriating and just shows how morally confused we really are. We all will die someday, that's just part of the package deal that is life. But we should recognize how infinitely precious a human life is, every human life; you and I, dear reader, are the ONLY truly unique things in the entire multiverse. We are space-time's scarcest products, we are infinitely more precious that any gem or rare earth mineral. Just stop and think about how evil one must be to choose material wealth over human life. How utterly self-centered it is to not combat climate change just because it would hurt the nation's bottom-line. "I don't care if thousands, millions, billions die, as long as my power and profits are safeguarded." That's who we are, because it's not only the rich and powerful who have this mindset; unfortunately a plurality of people still think the rich and powerful earned their position because they are right, and would vote them into office because they think that governing a people is the same as running a for profit company, when they're actually each other's opposite.

Any society that can't agree on the simple truth that human life is the most precious thing yet discovered in the entire universe, isn't a society worth fighting for. It just isn't, and I'm not even talking about plant- and animal life yet. We have to get our priorities straight here and we don't have forever to do so. Watch these pictures from Australia and ask yourself: why are we still spending money on ANYTHING else than trying to save those people, or people around the world in equally desperate situations? How come we spend billions of dollars on wars aimed at keeping intact the industries that probably put the Australians in this situation in the first place? We all should know the answer by now and start to re-evaluate our priorities by letting go of the priorities pushed upon us by a failed socioeconomic paradigm.
