The Death Of Democracy III: The Asshole Quotient- Aspects Of Human Nature

"For this is called politics and is the greatest of all arts, for sooner or later adherence to either party leads to one and the same end." Mika Waltari

To understand why it is that democracies eventually devolve into tyrannies it is imperative to understand some of the fundamental aspects of human nature itself- some "lowest common denominator" if you will. It wasn't an understanding of the political institutions that allowed Machiavelli to identify characteristics of the political actors (Princes) of his day in a manner that transcends the ages to today's politicians... it was an understanding of the basic nature of people themselves.

Twenty years or so ago I set out (in what began as a joke) to create a new model for political analysis, based not on the "Liberal-Conservative: Left-Right" dichotomy, not only because they're false, but because they're inaccurate, not to mention transient. There's a saying that: "If a man isn't a Liberal at 20, he has no heart and if he's not a Conservative at 50, he has no brain." What I looked for was something more permanent, one that took into consideration the essence of people from within a political rubric.

What I came up with was a four part model based on characteristics or aspects that seem not to change with time. First, there are elites and non-elites- not necessarily in a social or economic sense (although they do seem to apply) but rather that some people possess a number of innate leadership qualities- ones that make people want to follow them; not by fiat, but rather some unique traits of personality. The others would naturally be followers (also important as we will see).

The other characteristics, or types, are a bit more complicated and this is where the Asshole Quotient begins to factor in. Every "social scientist" - if such a creature actually exists- begins with a "state of nature" argument... what is the essence of human beings and what are the most basic characteristics of human nature. The two schools of thought: that people are naturally altruistic- what one might call outer-directed in a psychological context. The other is that people are naturally self-interested- once again in psychological terms inner-directed- in a Machiavellian sense, "only good when forced by necessity." Another way of expressing this could be irrational self-interest. However, the altruism vs. self-interest paradigm is another false dichotomy, although it is the basis of Marx's theory. Altruism is a learned behavior- a choice one makes- a manifestation of rational self-interest.

To clarify, the two fundamental characteristics of human nature are rational self-interest... that it is in my own best interest to try to get along in society because- given that I have to live within a social unit- it is in my own best interest to do so.

Conversely, irrational self-interest is predicated upon selfishness, hypocrisy and other elements so eloquently described by Machiavelli (remember, Machiavelli didn't only describe the ruling class, but people in general). Once again in psychological terms: inner-directed vs outer-directed. The characteristics of each "type" will become more evident as we go on.

To apply the model we need to make some typal designations- to try and keep it simple let's go with this:

A & B designate leader and non-leader types... elites and non-elites.

Positive & Negative Types... Positive (Pos) are people with innate leadership qualities that make people want to follow them. They seldom seek positions of authority- but are sought.

Negative (Neg) types are people drawn to power for what benefits it can accrue for them personally. They seek to lead rather than being sought (as the Pos are). They acquire power by any means necessary- whether subterfuge or force.

It should be clear at this point, but I'll reiterate- there are people driven by rational self-interest (Pos) or irrational self-interest (Neg). As for the B- non-leadership (followers) types go, remember the adage: "Birds of a feather flock together." The Neg leadership types attract others like themselves (both A & B)- the people so well identified by Machiavelli. we see them manifested in modern America as the "free shit" crowd, ANTIFA and other groups that don't seem to be FOR anything (except as it benefits them personally) but against almost almost everything... described so well by Rousseau as "the politics as reseniment." (resentment) These are people who have no interest in benefitting society in any way- only in what America offers them.

Heraclitus wrote (?): "You can never step in the same river twice." The thesis of his statement is that cultures are in a constant state of "flux." He also wrote that: "A man's character is his fate" and this is the crux of what drives cultures- character- or, of equal if not more importance, lack thereof. In a political sense, the ratio of leaders (A's) with character (Pos) vs those without (Neg) is what determines political outcomes. For a political culture to succeed (sustain longevity) a dynamic equilibrium must be maintained- this ratio is the Asshole Quotient. The Framers understood this and it's why they sought to diffuse power by dispersing it to the states. The more diversified the loci of power the less chance for tyranny.

Georg Hegel warned: "Beware the Prinzipien Männer," described in a statement by sociologist Max Weber... "Politics naturally engenders a cadre of men whose sole purpose is the doing of politics." [I paraphrase] These are the Neg types... people drawn to power by myopic selfishness. It is the same myopic selfishness, not altruism, that draws people to socialism. Margaret Thatcher summed it up perfectly: "The problem with Socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other people's money." Socialism draws the lazy, greedy and envious.

Marx's theory is based on an erroneous inversion of basic human nature. He posited that in the mythical state of nature people are driven solely by altruism and that characteristics such as greed and irrational self-interest are the result of "Capitalism." This is a false, manufactured dichotomy. In a state of nature people cooperate because of rational self-interest... the survival of the individual depends almost entirely on the survival of the social unit. This is critical to understand as America is on the long march toward Socialism and tyranny.

I've already belabored the point that Socialism attracts the Neg types (A & B). A democracy/republic can support a certain ratio of Pos/Neg types as long as some dynamic equilibrium is maintained... when it hits the tipping point, however, tyranny occurs, as it did in Nazi Germany, the USSR, China and other totalitarian/authoritarian regimes. The crucial question is where the tipping point happens to be... This is the Asshole Ratio- a democracy can support only so many assholes before turning into a tyranny (which always happens). This is perhaps not the most erudite choice of designations- but I like it.

One final observation... Socialist/Communist regimes are always implemented by force- as Mao observed: "Politics comes from the barrel of a gun," as was the case in Germany, the USSR and China... resulting in the deaths of well over 250 million people in the 20th century alone. The "long march" of Cultural Marxism is predicated on stealth and deceit. If an idea is in fact valid, people will adopt it willingly without murder or subterfuge... the mechanisms of tyrants. Conversely, no democracy that I'm aware of has had to be imposed at gunpoint... Democracy must be earned- it's more of a verb in fact than a noun.

the two fundamental characteristics of successful human nature are rational self-interest; fixed it ;>

Your view is similar to Cipolla's Laws of Stupidity, esp. in regards to the two Neg types

This is the Asshole Ratio- a democracy can support only so many assholes before turning into a tyranny (which always happens). This is perhaps not the most erudite choice of designations- but I like it.

I like it, too!

I think I can tie it into the rent-seekers/do-gooders concept very easily. Your two Neg types!

It looks like Cipolla's model is on it's side... The "Hurts" should be on the bottom... other than that it's right-on!

ahhh, I should have attached another version of the graph which divided the bandits quandrant into stupid bandits/smart bandits

These are Cipolla's five fundamental laws of stupidity:
1-Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.
2-The probability that a certain person (will) be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.
3-A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.
4-Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places and under any circumstances to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.
5-A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.
Corollary: a stupid person is more dangerous than a pillager.

The laws of stupidity started out as a private joke...

Haha... Leave it to a Dago!

if you marry an economist, he will try to give you the graph, o my daughter

I too have always found the Liberal-Conservative dichotomy a bit too puerile, really, and transient like you said. I like your classifications; obviously thorough research has gone into this. Hope it gets the recognition it deserves.

72 years worth... Thank you!!!

72! Amazing! Jesus Christ, 72! Wow. I'm speechless. Well it paid off!

This is critical to understand as America is on the long march toward Socialism and tyranny.

This caught my attention, because it is an observation that I have personally made, because I also believe that the United States is being guided, directly or indirectly, to socialism. What can be done to avoid that? I do not know, it seems that everyone went to that address.

I hate to say it, but- Grab a gun... It isn't going to go away on it's own!

Like rich q said.... "And what country can preserve it’s liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms." - Thomas Jefferson, November 13, 1787.

I don't think it's our only choice now, but someday it probably will be, since we seem determined to ignore all the others. In Federalist 21, Hamilton wrote that, "The natural cure for an ill administration, in a popular or representative constitution, is a change of men. " If we would just take that route, so many ills could be avoided.

I would love to see a true measure to drain the swamp. I would love to see a vigorous campaign to unseat all incumbents in the 2018 midterms. I wish the people would demand term limits (short ones!) and hold their officials accountable. That's the easiest and the safest way to start walking our government back to where it needs to be. Unfortunately I don't think it will ever happen.

I've written before that those who SEEK power tend to get it. Why? they volunteer to the positions of power as most other people have other things they would rather do. The long term effect is the reaches of power tend to be overwhelmingly dominated by the power seekers. This can and does corrupt pretty much any organization over time whether corporation, religion, or government.

Those that would DO good in those positions usually don't volunteer for them.

So we end up with pretty much every organization being populated predominantly by the NEG type in your post.

EDIT: Ironically those that we could perhaps most trust with the power don't want it.

Yes unfortunately... The only organization that's immune is AA... Because the leadership rotates every month or so, so nobody is in power long enough for it to do them any good... It also seem to discourage anyone from trying in my experience.

Yeah, I have no point of reference for that. I don't know a lot about AA.

Our Purpose

I prefer to interpret the same data in a different way.
"the monkeysphere".
anything beyond the phase-change interface...is progressively more insane proportional to size.
inside the sphere it's all comfy...
the higher the degree of technology the more comfy it will be.

but you can still have assholes in the known monkeysphere. In fact, due to personal relations w/ the assholes, it may be harder to counter them!

of course..you CAN have assholes in the monkeysphere...out side it they are guaranteed.
I don't agree about counter/control them.
the Amish shun
the eskimos banish.
works pretty well.

good counter examples

I will point out that they are unicultural, which may be another factor, but then again, I don't see monkey friendly populations with multiple cultures, either

part of the definition of monkeysphere IS unicultural

As you say, the Asshole Quotient always wins out in the end.

Hence why Franklin said that the Constitution was "likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic government, being incapable of any other."

It looks like the scales are tipping that direction. "We," not all of us, but American's in general, don't deserve to be free.

For all their differences, the Founders were in almost complete agreement on several points. If the people of a nation wanted to preserve their freedom they had to be moral, religious and well educated. 3 strikes, and we're nearly out.

Amen to that... Even Jefferson who was a Deist stressed the necessity for religion. Franklin, I believe may have been an atheist (don't quote me on that) and he also stressed the same thing. My favorite was Henry Laurens of SC- I think he was the first president under the Articles- wrote beautifully about the necessity of God for the nation to survive.

You're absolutely right about most of not deserving freedom... I think we're lucky to have lasted this long!

Laurens was president of the Continental Congress when the Articles were passed, but not by the time they were ratified. Other than that, I know relatively little about him. I noticed a book the other day at the library, which, given your recommendation, I should pick up and read.

Franklin was most certainly not an atheist, and I believe it would be a weak argument even to force him into the deist camp. I could offer you dozens of quotes if that interests you, but here is a pretty explicit one from his autobiography, part 8 - "I never doubted, for instance, the Existance of the Deity, that he made the World, and govern’d it by his Providence; that the most acceptable Service of God was the doing Good to Man; that our Souls are immortal; and that all Crime will be punished and Virtue rewarded either here or hereafter."

My floppy is a mess... I have a couple of good quotes from Laurens, but did find this by John Jay (I'll find Laurens in time- they were on a cover page)

No human society has ever been able to maintain both order and
freedom, both cohesiveness and liberty apart from the moral
precepts of the Christian Religion applied by all the classes.
Should our Republic ere forget this fundamental precept of
governance, men are certain to shed their responsibilities for
licentiousness and this great experiment will then surely be
doomed. © John Jay

I stand corrected on Franklin (like I said don't quote me on it)

I really like this post. I'd vote it higher if I could.

Thanks (I'd be happy with a RS!)

I already did that before my reply. I actually did it with two of my accounts. :)

I appreciate it... I'm trying to buy my own car! (And it's a beaut!!!)

That shouldn't take too long with how you are doing on rewards.

Not too bad... If BTC would get back up to around $15,000, I'd be in good shape. This is what I'm trying to get ($5000)

This is the engine (V-12)

It's in almost perfect shape- no dings and mechanically it is perfect.

Very philosophical :) Great overview and generally speaking I can't argue with your hypothesis. I worry that the tipping point have been affected, unnaturally, by long family dynasties making it irrelevant what character you have as they will push their family members to the top. In a natural world I think we have to accept a certain level of Asshole-quotient(love that phrase). But today's world is almost unrecognizable to any form of society. I get the feeling that the normal laws no longer apply as if we have steeped into another dimension. They make the rules, they control what we see, what we eat, and maybe even how we think. If there was a reset button, I think now would be a good time to press it. lol.

Maybe by making more people aware, we can act as the reset button. More and more people are starting to wake up, thanks to the internet... Maybe there's hope after all. You're right about dynasties of (Neg) people being in charge... along with their armies of useful idiots!

As long as I can keep writing, I intend to keep shining my little light in the dark corners! Thanks Buddy!!! Oh, by the way, I'm back on CPS abuse in the UK (researching as we speak)... Is there anybody in that country that isn't a pedophile???

Holy Jesus!!! I just looked at the link you sent! I have one more post to do on the rape gangs and then I was going to try to do Dunblane & The Jersey Home as one (looks like that won't happen) Then from there to the Royals- there's a book worth- and the Indian kids in Canada... Hopefully after that I can find some plain old CPS abuse (without sex!)

You'll be lucky to find something like that lol. I thought you would like that link. It's a crazy read, eh?! I never knew Gordon Brown was a nonse. The country is packed to the rafters with the dirty pigs. Go to town on the UK bro!

I'm going to do one more post for familyprotection... they focus on CPS abuse and the problem is so much bigger than that, it limits the scope of my exposee. I'm still going to "go to town on the UK," but with a different tag... probably pedophilia or pedogate. I want to tell the whole story and I can't do it from within the restrictions of CPS abuse alone.

Oh shit... I have a goatee (don't tell Mum). I had a friend that used to look at people's eyes- if they were too close together or too far apart... Don't trust 'em!

lol still better than judgments of cps.

Hey bro @richq11, What's your opinion on democracies & present political situation in middle east, Pakistan & Afghanistan?

Truthfully, I don't see it happening any time soon (although it would be wonderful- I love to see the people in control of the government). The whole "bringing democracy to the Middle East" by the Bush admin was an excuse to perpetuate a war there. The countries you named are basically theocracies where the prevalent religion (Islam) controls the govt. This isn't a criticism, merely an observation- if the people embrace it and are happy, then it works. You can't go around the globe trying to force your way of life on other people- that was Bush's mistake, even though to people like him war = business!

This comes to mind...

"We came, We saw, He died!" HRC

What a beautiful & perfect observation. That's what we the people of these countries want, I mean people have had a very bad experience with democracy here but the west's full support for these corrupt governments, systems & rulers, makes many of the people to consider extremists as their alternative while the majority want the modern system based on religious teachings.

Extremism is almost never the answer. However, when a country (Like mine) sends troops into another country under pretenses just to keep the military industrial companies going, with no clear objective except to make money- what can a smaller country do?

I seriously hope that the new president here will work with countries like yours- to end violence... it's completely unnecessary. But it has to start somewhere and given that we started the conflict, it's up to us to end it. People should be left alone to practice whatever form of government they choose (without intervention from outside). One thing is sure, our government is corrupt to the core and a lot of good people here want it to stop! May the peace of God be with you and your people!

That's so nice of you. It's really an amazing discussion. The world is in dire need of the people like you and if the numbers increase than we will able to see a beautiful and peaceful tomorrow. I really think that if any of the government stick to the real idea of making America great again or puts America first than these problems will solved quickly because as you mentioned that the war business of military industrial companies create this whole mess then it's obviously not "America first". Thanks again brother. love you ♥

If they would focus on "America First" then we would not be in your country. Meddling in the affairs of other countries is not "America First".

I agree with @richq11.

Though I will say that two wrongs don't make a right. If America is bad (we are currently, but many want change) and interferes in another country then if that country or its citizens in turn call for Hijrah, Jihad, or ANY other assault against the U.S. (doesn't matter the religion or form of government) then they give the assholes in charge here JUSTIFICATION. The attacks and invasions are then used as "See, we were right to attack them!" Their justification is of course bullshit, but most of the public cannot see past the attacks, terrorism, or invasion.

Really the only hope to stop it is to have people like you speaking, and people like @richq11 and I speaking. Our numbers grow. What we say makes what the U.S. (or any other 'aggressor') does look bad. Their citizens will demand it stop.

If this is not done and instead attacks occur, all it does is keep the citizens thinking these crazy aggressors are right.

The truth of the matter is Aggression is never the answer. Defense is important but that is very different from aggression.

Preemptive attacks are aggression. They are treating people guilty of a crime they have not yet committed. They are attacking before there has been a crime simply because they've convinced people a crime is probable to be committed. Precrime if you will. They like to treat this like it is defense. It is not. It is aggression.

Now if we can keep people talking, and keep people from attacking and doing stupid things we might be able to fix these problems. The attacks just give those corrupt jerks in charge all the fuel they need to justify their actions to the blind emotionally lead masses.

I understand their frustration... But you hit it on the head- two wrongs do not make a right. Someone needs to make the first move toward peace. I think Trump is willing to listen, but there's going to have to be some kind of overture from the other side as well. The Deep State- not so much!

You are right brother @dwinblood, that revenge attacks always used as the justification for already happened invasions. People are hating Trump but I admit that I liked a fact about him that he is not a hypocrite and many of us think about it and I really hoped that he would withdraw US forces from middle-East but then his military advisers convinced him to change his mind and send more forces in the region. I think there are strong lobbies in US who don't want to end these wars in middle-East that are pumping this whole extremism. Most of the people don't know the reality and the real games being played behind these wars because mainstream media is also part of the same lobbies. Thank God we have social media, even if it's also partially being controlled by the governments but we have many liberties with it and the key for a peaceful world is to talk more about these issues.
