Is the Marines new sniper rifle worth it?

in #informationwar6 years ago

So the Marines are replacing the venerable Remington 700 that they have used for 5 decades but is it worth the cost?

Headline: U.S. Marines Are Getting a New Sniper Rifle

source
From Popular Mechanics:

The U.S. Marine Corps is replacing its existing sniper rifles with a newer model that fires a heavier, longer-range bullet. The new Mark 13 Mod 7 sniper rifle, a favorite of Navy SEALs is replacing the older M40 series of rifles. The result is a more accurate rifle with the potential to hit targets at nearly three quarters of a mile.
The M40 series of sniper rifles has served the Marine Corps for more than 50 years. Originally introduced during the Vietnam War, the Marine Corps purchased commercial Remington Model 40X bolt-action varmint rifles with heavy barrels, slapped on a Redfield 3-9x variable power scope, and gave them the designation M40. The M40 served in the Vietnam War and every conflict since then, progressively upgraded with new features such as a new Remington 700 action, fiberglass stocks, new optics, and other shooting accessories.
Despite the upgrades, the M40 series was limited by the ballistics of the .308 Winchester round. Although an effective hunting and military round, a.308 round rapidly loses energy after 700 yards. At 600 yards, a sniper armed with a M40 can expect a bullet to drop 105 inches short of the target, requiring upward compensation of 105 inches to remain on target. At 800 yards the drop balloons to 228 inches, and at 1,000 yards the drop is 421 inches. This loss of energy also affects wind drift, with .308 requiring 53 inches of wind correction in a five mile-per-hour wind to hit a target at 1,000 yards. The M40 series’ maximum effective range is about 1,000 yards.
The fewer corrections a sniper must make to hit a long distance target the better, and sharpshooters accomplish this by using a heavier, higher-power round. Unlike the older .308 round, the bigger .300 Winchester Magnum is effective out to 1,300 yards. It requires only 246 inches of vertical correction at 1,000 yards, and 40 inches of horizontal correction at 1,000 yards in a five mile-per-hour wind. The heavier round also hits with more energy at longer ranges, making it more likely to incapacitate the target. The .300 round’s maximum range is about 1,300 yards.
Now, according to Military Times, the Marines are finally switching to a .300 Winchester Magnum platform. The Mark 13 Mod 7 rifle, originally used by Navy SEALs, is a Remington 700 long action in a lightweight, skeletonized chassis. The Mark 13 uses the Nightforce ATACR rifle scope with Horus Tremor3 reticle. The reticle features marks for quickly estimating range to target, compensating for bullet drop and accounting for wind shift.
The Marines plan to purchase 346 Mark 13 Mod 7 rifles for $4.3 million. The rifles are built by Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane division, in Crane, Indiana. NSWC Crane is responsible for several Navy and Marine Corps small arms projects, including the Mark 12 Special Purpose Rifle.

Clearly this is a better caliber because it extends the effective range of a sniper significantly but lets take a look at the price tag. 4.3 million divided by 346 rifles gives us a unit cost of $12,427.75 per rifle! That seems a little pricy to me.

Looking online the most expensive price for a ATACR nightforce scope I could find was $3492 from Midway but other sellers had it for far less. Lets go with the premium price though.

These are the most expensive .300 Win mags I could find, they are totally badass and service ready:

Barrett Firearms MRAD Multi Role Adaptive Design .300 Win Mag 24" Fluted Barrel Olive Drab Green Cerakoted Receiver10rd - $5970

Armalite AR-30A1 Target Rifle Bolt .300 Win Mag, 24" Barrel, Adjustable Stock, 5+1rd - $2908

(prices from impactguns.com)

So if we were spending money like drunken sailors and went to the gun store and instead of shopping for the lowest price we paid the highest retail price we could have as good (probably better) of a gun for $9,062. But of course if we were buying 300 of those guns we wouldn't expect to pay retail would we? And yet taxpayers will be on the hook for over $12,000 per unit, I wonder if that includes a sling.

I feel like this is what Trump is talking about when he says we make bad deals. What do you think? Did I miss something?

They are probably paying extra for Mil-spec.
Which means that all the parts are all interchangeable.

As a personal owner, i would make sure each part is machined specifically to the part it goes with. And so, i would get a much tighter action. However, the parts from my gun may not fit into your gun.

Mil-spec just means that all the metal working processes have to be that much stricter, but you can still end up with a gun where everything clunks around inside.

It would be in the documentation... i can't remember specifically.
To get the contract, they have to meet certain specifications and those are where you will find the tolerances. Its in that packet.

And generally, everything for The US military is Mil-spec (military specification).

Whereas, auto makers have gone to a labelling system.
Lets say you have a crankshaft that is supposed to be 1.5000"

So, what they do is machine it so it should be close, then measure it, and stamp it
A = 1.4800
B = 1.4900
C = 1.5000
D = 1.5100
E = 1.5200

Then you put all the A parts into one engine, and all the B parts in another engine.
The parts being the crankshaft, the bearing and the pillow blocks.

But, if you have A parts, you cannot drop in an E part.

The same is done with commercial fire arms.

looks like the milspec version of the 700 in .300 Win Mag is like $1100

Did you include the govern-cement contractor large order discount?
That usually only doubles or triples the cost. :-p

exactamundo! Always charge triple for institutional clients. I worked for a guy one time who would always win his bids for redoing these summer camps by merely doubling his normal rate instead of tripling it.
To some degree it makes sense, you are going to probably end up doing a lot more paperwork and waiting and jumping through random hoops when dealing with the government so you will incur additional costs.

That's a great question. I would guess that they would say that they have them already but that it is not always the best choice because the fucker is so big and heavy and there are not always clear shooting lanes a mile long that you could take advantage of. Consider how many rounds of .50 someone could haul around compared to .300, the rounds themselves are heavy and bulky.

how many rounds does it take?
'one shot...one kill'

LOL, I considered using a still from the movie Sniper or better yet Sniper:2: "One shot, two kills" Probably Tom Beringer's finest film.

The problem is there is often more than one jihadist.

as long as you have enough bullets with you ;)

that's always the problem isn't it? No matter what kind of gun you have.
can't never have too much ammo.

That's why I think in the event of an actual zombie apocalypse you are going to want a good .22lr, they only die from headshots anyways and you can carry around 1000s of rounds easily.

Expecting efficiency in government is like expecting a chocolate fireguard to do it's job.

mmm, chocolate fireguard

People say that we shouldn't be able to own the same gun as the military. -
Well, Then maybe the military should get a new gun!! Problem solved lol

What's funny is that it is really just a big game rifle but I bet progressives would all support a measure to ban "sniper rifles".

😂😂

I'm from the UK, and still have my air rifle from growing up. Apparently (not 100% sure), it's now illegal with out a license.

I'm not there, so i'll just hang on to it, on principle.

Seriously, a fucking air rifle..

I heard they were banning/ requiring permits to keep air rifles, c'mon what if it fell into the wrong hands? They could put an eye out with that thing!

@endplunder, one word comments are useless. Please, put in a little effort to help make Steemit better!

A lot of people feel that way about bots too.
