We Need Immigrants by @tremblepike

When I was writing my master's thesis about the Allied effort to develop the first nuclear reactors and explosives during World War Two, a central aspect of that thesis was the great advantage immigrants brought to the U.S.A. America defeated Nazi Germany's parallel effort to do the same, and this would not have been possible without immigrants. 

After Leo Szilard (born in Hungary) came up with the idea to develop a nuclear chain reaction, he discussed it with his friend Eugene Wigner (born in Hungary). They needed to access lab equipment in America to try their first experiment, and Enrico Fermi (born in Italy) allwed Szilard and Wigner into his lab. Their experiment was a success, but in order to start the project necessary to defeat the German effort to develop nuclear weapons (which was already underway) they needed to get the attention of the President. Szilard and Wigner went to Albert Einstein (born in Germany), and asked him to write a letter to the President. Einstein wrote the letter, but instead of delivering it in the mail he decided to have it hand delivered to the President by a mutual friend Andrew Sachs (born in Lithuania). 

Once the project started, the U.S. Army was able to recruit top scientists to work for success. They reached out to Edward Teller (born in Hungary), Maria Göppert-Meyer (born in Germany), Victor Weisskopf (born in Hungary), Stanislaw Ulam (born in Poland), Otto Frisch (born in Austria), Emilio Segre (born in Italy), a female physicist so brilliant she was called "our Marie Curie" at the Manhattan Project: Chien Shiung-Wu (born in China), and diverse other immigrants to the U.S.A. Germany lost the race, and part of that loss came from Nazi bigotry against Jews. Many of the Jewish scientists who managed to escape Nazi Germany came to our side. 

America needs immigrants to succeed. Nazi Germany is an example of what happens when bigots chase intellectual and work resources away. Bigotry and hatred in America will only end up hurting America; we need to remember that our road to success is based on the motto found on any American coins: E Pluribus Unum.
