“I - TALENT” Italian Still Life an Original Oil Painting by Matthew Holden Bates

For my entry in the “i - talent” all art contest I present to you “Italian Still Life”, made on commission for a friend who is a mathematician, we devised a composition that uses the Fibonacci series.
What is the Fibonacci series? It is a simple yet incredible series that can be found in many natural phenomenon, from the way plants grow, to the proportion of our bodies, to the form of the galaxy. Here is how the series works: it start with nothing, a zero, then you add one to the mix, and you take the last number and add it to the series so far we have 0, 1, (0+1), 1, (1+1), 2, (1+2), 3, (2+3), 5, and so on. Here is the beginning of the series:
0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,144,233,377,610,987,1597,2584,4181,6765,10946,17711....................
If we take the last two numbers (10946, 17711) and divide them 10946/17711=0.61803399 we get what is known as the golden ratio. The beauty of this series is that if you take any of the last two numbers, and divide them you get an approximation of this ratio. For artistic purposes, we will call this proportion to be around 62%. Since this proportion is found literally everywhere in the universe, it makes for a really cool tool to make an artistic composition. Here is the Fibonacci series at work in the composition of this painting:

Very interesting this publication. Did you use the Fibonacci series for the arrangement of colors and space within your artwork?

Yes, the Fibonacci series was integrated into the composition before I started painting. I did this using photography and then photoshop, which is a great design tool. I was able to fit the elements of the painting together so that they interacted with the Fibonacci grid.
