Wisdom In Humor

in #humor5 years ago

I miss George Carlin. He was, and still is, one of my favorite comedians of all time. He was a master with words, producing genuine word-wizardry that captivated his audience in a harsh reflection of modern society's hidden absurdities, exposing humanity as a stumbling child trying to stand upright on this beautiful planet of ours.

For some his humor was too dark, too pessimistic, but for me and millions of his fans he was hitting the nail on it's head with every joke; humor only works if it somehow confronts us with the absurdity of our existence, and that only works when there's truth hidden in there. And that's something he excelled at; telling truths, uncomfortable truths about the human condition, truths most people refuse to see, other than at a night out, laughing their ass off with Carlin...

One of my favorite Carlin sketches is the one about stuff. Storage lockers. City Boxes. If you stop and think about it, there's something perverse going on in a society in which we have so much stuff that we need extra storage space besides our own house. That's what makes Carlin a brilliant comedian; he's able to take on the viewpoint of an external observer who looks upon our society and is thus able to recognize the perverse in the mundane. Here's some of Carlin's stuff:

George Carlin Talks About "Stuff"

I sure do hope you recognize that the most important stuff George talks about in the above video, is the stuff thieves are not interested in... Carlin was also one of the best when it comes to making fun of politics and the economy, and especially the mix between them. Politics are an extension of economy, and not the other way around; this has been the case in all of human history so it shouldn't surprise anyone that Democrats and Republicans are just the left- and right hand of the same monster. Still it does surprise people when you tell them that, and still these people go out voting every time thinking their vote will chance economic reality.

Brewster's Millions (10/13) Movie CLIP - None of the Above (1985)

If you're really fed up with how the economy and politicians have treated "we, the people" over the past decades, voting for Trump or any other reactionary populist leader, is not the answer; the proper answer is to not vote at all and thereby indicating we know the game is rigged, refusing to grant a "platform" to either side. If we would unite in Brewster's Millions "none of the above" vote, that would be the clearest signal we can send to the powers that be that something has to change radically. Carlin didn't go that far, at least as far as I know, but I really believe democracy can be saved by taking a vacation from it. Like Brewster says: only an idiot would vote for these clowns.

Back to Carlin's insightful humor though. He was, in my opinion, a shining beacon for free speech; one can not be a word-wizard if one's not free to speak their mind, on any issue. I'm afraid that if he were alive today, he wouldn't have been broadcast on HBO like he used to, given the climate of extreme political correctness right now. So please enjoy him on YouTube, as long as he's not filtered away from there:
