Homesteading: Who would have thought that raising ducks could lead to raising responsible kids?

in #homesteading6 years ago (edited)

Mama Myra, that is what Dea calls her grandmom, gave a pair of duck as a gift for my little one being included in the Honor Roll. Mama Myra told my little one to take care of the ducks so that she could someday have a source of income for her school daily allowance and other school expenses. Or better yet, could buy a tablet or a mobile phone for herself out of the ducks given.

Methinks, that would be great. Imagine, I would no longer slice the monthly budget for her daily allowance and school expenses. Instead, the ducks would take care of it. Wow right? But how would that be possible? I got a little pessimistic upon hearing it.

But then, my little one was so excited and so happy to accept the gift. It was her long-time dream to have a mobile phone or a tablet of her own actually. See the picture, she is close to tears. Tears of joy, undoubtedly.

Grateful tears of joy

I STOPPED what I was doing and I couldn't let the #teardrops moment pass. So I took a picture of my Little One with her Mama Myra and would definitely be singing song later -- which will be when these ducks are turned into money already. High time for some Karaoke!

Her responsibility

So every morning before she goes to school she makes sure her ducks are fed and upon arriving home, she checks on her ducks. That has been her routine. And we are just glad at the positive spin the ducks turned my Dea into. I, in turn, made sure the ducks are getting enough water. I did my research actually. ^^,

Ducks need water, although not as much as you might imagine. Domestic ducks only spend around 10% of their time on water, so a plastic water tub that can be tipped out and refilled is actually far better than a small fixed pond that will soon get full of mud, muck and feathers.

So after about a month, the duck finally began to lay eggs. Yey!

Eggs for breakfast! Yey!

Dea is so happy. Her breakfast is all secured having an egg for a meal. For about a week, she has eggs - just eggs - for breakfast and she does not complain. She just loves eggs.

But her Mama Myra adviced her not to eat the eggs, instead let it be hatched. It took a lot of courage and determination, really, not to get those newly laid eggs to get into the pan for breakfast. LoL!

Again, I did my research and I learned that ducks wait until all her eggs are laid before she sits. So, it is best to place them in an incubator instead to ensure ducklings.

Some people who raise ducks incubate eggs under a broody duck or in an incubator, also called a setter. The incubator keeps the eggs at a controlled temperature and a controlled humidity for the eggs' development.

We are glad to find an incubation service for only Php25 an egg. Not bad, rather than have those eggs go to waste. No pun intended.

She followed the advice and after about a couple of months....

look at what the pair of ducks have become!

They just keep on multiplying!

Overjoyed

She verbally imagined that if these ducklings will grow and would lay eggs as well, and those eggs would be hatched into ducklings and the ducklings will grow and would lay eggs too....it goes on and on, there will be "hundreds or thousands or even millions" of ducks already.

"I will be rich already, mommy!"

Happy mom here.

This little one, only 7 years old, have been trained to be responsible and diligent. Who would have thought that raising ducks could be a key to parenting? Well, @baby07 thinks so too. She has a great kid.

To be honest, I never thought it could. But turned out that it could be of help!
Hello ducks!
Hello eggs!
...and hello my responsible and diligent little one!
