First Sweet Aji Pepper Germinated - The Container Garden With PumpkinsandCats

in #homesteading7 years ago (edited)

Success! The second of my variety of pepper seeds has germinated.

The scores are now as follows

Orange Bell 1/2
Sweet Aji 1/2
Alberto Locoto 0/2

The Alberto Lococo can take up too 3 weeks to germiate so there is hope yet.

I have popped the seed into one of my toilet paper planters which can be seen here

You can also that the broadbeans are also beginning to show their heads over the top of the planters

2017 Garden Review

Lovin' the TP rolls for seedlings!

I was thinking of trying the K-Cup coffee things too. I always hear coffee ground are good for a garden, so if you didn't clean them completely it should actually be beneficial.

Are they similar to the coffee filters? Yeah i've heard coffee and also tea bags, but you've got to be careful because some contain plastic!

these

Little plastic cups for the Keurig coffee machine. True about the plastic. I read somewhere once that people use them. Wonder how successful they are.

Yeah they look useful! Poke a hole in bottom with a cocktail stick for drainage too.

Plus good to reuse plastic =D

I dont drink coffee but we probably have something similar here

That's good news @pumpkinsandcats, I wish you success with these peppers & broadbeans.

I was wondering if you could you tell me when would be best to sow runnerbeans (Scarlet Emperor) please? It's something mum always did each year but her dementia now means I'm running blind this year and I'd like to carry on for her.

Many thanks,
Rob.

I have never grown runner beans but you want to sow them from April indoors and plant outside in May.

You'll need bamboo canes for supports tipee formation is ideal. If growing in containers 1 plant with supports per round tub with good soil depth. Atleast a foot deep.

And use crushes egg shells around the base to keeps sluhs and snails off

Mum used the 2 x tepee method, approx 4-5 foot apart and a cane running across top between them. I'm wanting to get my daughter involved so may sow indoors first in April so she can get more 'hands on' experience :)

Thanks about the crushed egg shells tip, I know in previous years those little blighters play havoc with the leaves.

Cheers,

Rob.

Children love growing dont they!

They certainly do :)
Katie enjoys a bit of bushcrafty stuff to.
