Roma v AC Milan: best matches of the past - Roma-Milan: le più belle sfide del passato [ENG-ITA]

Dear Steemit friends, lovers of Italian football,
The match between Roma and Milan, which will be played at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday evening, will close the 24th day of the Serie A, curiously facing the only two Italian teams to have survived the round of 16 of the Europe League, after the elimination of Braga and Red Star respectively.
Both sides are not having a particularly exciting time in the league, with the Capitoline side still struggling with the ups and downs that have characterised their season from the start, and Milan in the midst of a real crisis of performance and results, which has caused the Rossoneri to drop out of the top of the table in favour of Inter, following three defeats in the last four days.
The points at stake between the two rivals on Sunday will be important in terms of qualification for the next Champions League, with Roma looking to beat one of the top eight teams for the first time this season and Milan trying to avenge their 2-1 defeat last season.
The past record at the capital's stadium shows a slight preponderance for the Milanese side, who have won 28 of their 85 matches in the past against 26 for Roma, but the balance of the match is guaranteed if you consider that Fonseca's team have picked up the most points at home this season, while the Rossoneri have the opposite record, having picked up more points on away matches than any other team in Serie A.
When two of Italian football's great teams face each other, it's never easy to find just four matches that characterise the history of past challenges, but as usual I'll try to suggest below what I think are the most beautiful matches between Roma and Milan in the past.
Roma's most exciting victory
Roma v AC Milan 3-1 (25 September 1983)
After winning their second Scudetto the previous season, Roma, coached by Nils Liedholm, came to the Stadio Olimpico on the third day of the season with a full points tally to face Milan, newly promoted from Serie B after a successful year.
The Rossoneri showed that they could keep up with their better-ranked opponents for almost the whole of the first half, but after taking the lead with a goal from Sergio Battistini, they had to suffer the comeback of their rivals who first drew with Vincenzi, then took the lead thanks to a great goal from Aldo Maldera, who a minute before the end of the first half let off a shot that pierced Nuciari from over thirty metres.
In the second half the visitors tried with courage, but it was again Roma who scored with Falcao ten minutes from the end. Despite the excellent start, Roma had to be content with second place at the end of the season, behind Juventus, while Milan was a decent eighth place.
Milan's most exciting victory

Carlo Ancelotti's Milan visited unbeaten Roma on Epiphany, the 15th day of the Serie A. The Rossoneri, second in the standings, have to recover three points from their rivals and the direct match seems to happen at the right time: the guests start better, dominating the first part of the match and finding the goal with Shevchenko in the 23rd minute, but, after having almost doubled the score with the same Ukrainian striker, they have to suffer the goal of Cassano at the end of the first half.
In the second half, the music didn't change much and it was again the Milan to take the lead again with Shevchenko, who, unleashed, came close to scoring 1-3. A well-deserved victory, symbol of a ride that will lead the Rossoneri to the conquest of their seventeenth Scudetto, just ahead of Roma.
Roma's biggest victory
Roma v AC Milan 5-0 (3 May 1998)
In one of its worst seasons in recent years, Fabio Capello's Milan visited Roma on the third last day of the 1997/98 season, with no great pretensions of improving its ranking and with the disappointment of the defeat suffered just three days earlier in the Coppa Italia final against Lazio still fresh.
The hosts needed points to consolidate their fourth position and after less than half an hour they were already 3-0 up, thanks to Candela and Di Biagio's two goals, taking a 4-0 lead in the 39th minute with Paulo Sergio's goal.
The second half was a long parade for the Giallorossi, who just before the end found the fifth goal with Delvecchio. With a fourth-place finish, Roma qualified for the following year's Uefa Cup, while Milan could only manage tenth place.
Milan's biggest victory
Roma v AC Milan 0-4 (25 February 1990)
Maradona's Napoli was about to win the second Scudetto in its history, just ahead of Milan, author of a long and tight duel with the Neapolitan team. One of the most striking proofs of strength of the Rossoneri's season was the victory against Roma, which came on the ninth day in the small Flaminio stadium.
The Roma gameplay was pleasant and courageous, but at the same time evanescent and wasteful and Milan was able to strike twice around half an hour, first taking the lead with an own goal by Tempestilli, then doubling it with Van Basten, who took advantage of the first real goal ball his team had.
In the second half the guests became overpowering, finding the goal again with Van Basten (top scorer of the Serie A at the end of the year with 19 goals) and at the end with Massaro.
The disappointment for the second place in the championship would be largely overcome by Sacchi's team with the conquest of the Champions League, in the final against Benfica, while for Roma the championship would end with the sixth place.

la sfida tra la Roma e il Milan, che si disputerà allo Stadio Olimpico domenica sera, chiuderà la ventiquattresima giornata di Serie A, mettendo di fronte curiosamente le uniche due squadre italiane sopravvissute ai sedicesimi di finale di Europa League, dopo le eliminazioni rispettivamente di Braga e Stella Rossa.
Entrambe le formazioni non stanno vivendo un momento particolarmente esaltante in campionato, con i capitolini ancora alle prese con gli alti e bassi che hanno caratterizzato la loro stagione fin dall'inizio, e il Milan nel bel mezzo di una vera e propria crisi di gioco e risultati, che ha portato la squadra rossonera ad abbandonare la prima posizione in classifica in favore dell'Inter, in seguito alle tre sconfitte giunte nelle ultime quattro giornate.
I punti in palio domenica tra le due rivali saranno importanti soprattutto in chiave qualificazione alla prossima Champions League, con la Roma che cercherà per la prima volta in stagione di battere una delle prime otto squadre della classifica e il Milan, dal canto suo, di vendicare la sconfitta (2-1) patita nella scorsa stagione.
I precedenti giocati nell'impianto della capitale parlano di una leggera prevalenza della squadra milanese, capace di aggiudicarsi 28 degli 85 incontri disputati in passato contro i 26 della Roma, ma l'equilibrio della sfida è garantito se si considera che la formazione di Fonseca è quella che ha ottenuto più punti in casa in questa stagione, mentre i rossoneri vantano il primato opposto, avendo raccolto più punti in trasferta di ogni altra formazione di Serie A.
Quando ad affrontarsi sono due grandi squadre del calcio italiano non è mai semplice trovare solo quattro partite che caratterizzino la storia delle sfide passate, ma come di consueto proverò a proporre di seguito quelle che ritengo le più belle sfide tra Roma e Milan del passato.
La vittoria più bella della Roma
Roma-Milan 3-1 (25 settembre 1983)
Dopo aver conquistato il secondo scudetto della sua storia nella stagione precedente, la Roma allenata da Nils Liedholm si presenta a punteggio pieno alla terza giornata d'andata di fronte al pubblico delle grandi occasioni dell'Olimpico, per ricevere il Milan, neopromosso dopo la vittoriosa annata trascorsa in Serie B.
I rossoneri dimostrano di poter reggere il passo dei più quotati avversari per quasi tutto il primo tempo, ma dopo essere passati in vantaggio con una rete di Sergio Battistini, devono subire il ritorno dei rivali che prima pareggiano con Vincenzi, poi passano in vantaggio grazie al gran goal di Aldo Maldera, che un minuto prima della fine del primo tempo lascia partire un bolide capace di trafiggere Nuciari da oltre trenta metri.
Nella ripresa gli ospiti ci provano con coraggio, ma è ancora la Roma a segnare con Falcao a dieci minuti dalla fine. Nonostante l'ottima partenza i capitolini dovranno accontentarsi a fine stagione del secondo posto, alle spalle della Juventus, mentre per il Milan ci sarà un discreto ottavo posto finale.
La vittoria più bella del Milan
Roma-Milan 1-2 (6 gennaio 2004)
Il Milan di Carlo Ancelotti fa visita alla Roma, capolista e ancora imbattuta, nel giorno dell'Epifania, per la gara valevole per la quindicesima giornata di Serie A. I rossoneri, secondi in classifica, devono rimontare tre punti ai rivali e lo scontro diretto sembra capitare proprio nel momento giusto: gli ospiti partono meglio, dominando la prima parte della gara e trovando la rete con Shevchenko al ventitreesimo minuto, ma, dopo aver sfiorato il raddoppio sempre con lo stesso attaccante ucraino, devono subire la rete del pareggio di Cassano allo scadere del primo tempo.
Nella ripresa la musica non cambia di molto ed è ancora il Milan a farsi preferire,riportandosi in vantaggio ancora con Shevchenko, che scatenato sfiora più volte la rete dell'1-3. Una vittoria meritata, simbolo di una cavalcata che porterà i rossoneri alla conquista del loro diciassettesimo scudetto, proprio davanti alla Roma.
La vittoria più larga della Roma
Roma-Milan 5-0 (3 maggio 1998)
In una delle sue peggiori stagioni degli ultimi anni, il Milan di Fabio Capello* fa visita alla Roma alla terz'ultima giornata del campionato 1997/98, senza grosse pretese di migliorare la sua classifica e con la delusione della sconfitta patita appena tre giorni prima nella finale di Coppa Italia con la Lazio ancora fresca.
I padroni di casa hanno bisogno di punti per consolidare la loro quarta posizione e dopo nemmeno mezz'ora sono già in vantaggio per 3-0, grazie alla rete di Candela e alla doppietta di Di Biagio, portandosi addirittura sul 4-0 al 39° minuto con il goal di Paulo Sergio.
Il secondo tempo è una lunga passerella della squadra giallorossa, che poco prima della fine trova il quinto goal con Delvecchio. Con il quarto posto finale la Roma si qualificherà alla Coppa Uefa dell'anno successivo, mentre il Milan non riuscirà ad andare oltre il decimo posto.
La vittoria più larga del Milan
Roma-Milan 0-4 (25 febbraio 1990)
Il Napoli di Maradona si appresta a vincere il secondo scudetto della sua storia, proprio davanti al Milan, autore di un lungo e serrata duello con la squadra partenopea. Una delle prove di forza più eclatanti della stagione rossonera è la vittoria contro la Roma, giunta alla nona giornata di ritorno nel piccolo stadio Flaminio.
Il gioco della Roma è piacevole e coraggioso, ma allo stesso tempo evanescente e sprecone e il Milan può così colpire due volte intorno alla mezz'ora, prima passando in vantaggio con un'autorete di Tempestilli, poi raddoppiando con Van Basten, che sfrutta la prima vera palla goal avuta dalla sua squadra.
Nella ripresa gli ospiti diventano straripanti, trovando il goal ancora con Van Basten (capocannoniere della Serie A a fine anno con 19 reti) e allo scadere con Massaro.
La delusione per il secondo posto finale in campionato verrà ampiamente superata dalla squadra di Sacchi con la conquista della Champions League, in finale con il Benfica, mentre per la Roma il campionato si chiuderà con un deludente sesto posto.
