The 33rd edition of the Italian Super Cup is ready to make the hearts of the fans of Juventus and Napoli beat faster as the two teams battle it out on the neutral pitch of the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia to secure their first trophy of the season.
The Italian champions are competing in the competition (which they have already won eight times, making them the most successful team) for the 16th time, while Napoli secured another challenge to their 'hated' rivals Juventus by winning the Italian Cup on penalties in June last year, in what will be their fourth attempt at the trophy, after winning twice in 1990 and 2014, and losing in 2012.
Juventus and Napoli** have already met in the final of the Super Cup three other times, in 1990, 2012 and 2014, and the record is in favour of the Neapolitan side, who have lifted the trophy twice, compared to just once for their rivals. Despite their league misstep against Inter, the team coached by Andrea Pirlo will attempt to even the scoreline this evening and bring their tally of victories to nine, but it will not be easy to overtake Napoli, galvanised by their tennis-like victory over Fiorentina.
The history of the Italian Super Cup, which began in 1988 with the victory of Milan over Sampdoria, is characterised by hard-fought and spectacular matches, often ending after the 90th minute. Confident that the two rivals will provide equally noteworthy entertainment in the depressing setting of an empty stadium, we look back at the five most exciting finals of the past, along with the exploits of the players who made them famous.
AC Milan v Fiorentina 1-2
(Milan, 25 August 1996)
At the ninth edition of the trophy, for the first time it was not the team that had won the Scudetto, but the team that had won the Coppa Italia in the previous season that won the cup.
AC Milan, Italian champions, already winners of four Super Cups, faced at San Siro with a certain superficiality a motivated Fiorentina, able to take the lead after a few minutes thanks to a goal by Batistuta, who with a great stroke passed over Franco Baresi at speed.
The hosts began to play better and equalised through Savicevic, but had to bow again to the Argentine ace in the second half, when a perfect free-kick went over the barriers and into the back of the net. The success in the Super Cup marked the start of a decent season for the Viola, who reached the semi-finals of the Cup Winners' Cup and finished the season in ninth place.
Juventus v AC Milan 5-3 (APK)

A little more than two months after the Champions League final in Manchester, which crowned the Rossoneri as European champions for the sixth time, Juventus and Milan met again in the Italian Super Cup, in the only final in history to be played under the silver goal rule.
Despite the exceptional spectacle of the first 90 minutes, the two teams ended 0-0, but it was in the first of the two extra periods that the game really exploded: Andrea Pirlo, then wearing the Milan jersey, put the Rossoneri ahead on a penalty kick in the first extra time, but in the following action, with the force of desperation, Juventus equalised with Trezeguet, prolonging the match which the Bianconeri won on penalties, thanks to a save by Buffon on Brocchi.
Inter v Roma 4-3 (AET)

Three months after the final of the Coppa Italia, also played between the two teams, Inter and Roma met again at the San Siro for the Supercup. It's the first edition of the trophy played after the well-known facts of Calciopoli, which awarded the Scudetto to the Nerazzurri after the relegation of Juventus and the penalisation of Milan, and the Giallorossi almost seem to take advantage of the presumed sense of inadequacy of Inter in the role of champion of Italy, ending the first half ahead 1-3, after being ahead by three goals.
In the second half, however, Mancini's men equalised thanks to goals from Crespo and Vieira, winning the match in extra time, with a goal from Louis Figo, and thus beginning a winning cycle that would last four seasons.

In front of 14,000 spectators in the Qatari stadium, Juventus and Napoli played their third match in the competition, which had so far been won by the partenopei in 1990 and the bianconeri in 2012.
Juventus got off to a flying start and took the lead after just five minutes, with a goal from Argentine Carlos Tevez, but as is often the case with the Allegri team, they ended up pulling back too far after the lead and conceded the equaliser from Higuain in the second half.
In extra time the Italian champions took another lead, again through Tevez, but were again surprised by Higuain with two minutes remaining.
With the momentum on their side, the men coached by Rafa Benitez were able to win the trophy on the ninth penalty kick, thanks to the decisive goal from Koulibaly, after both teams had missed the previous two shots from the penalty spot.
Juventus v Lazio 2-3

The 30th edition of the trophy, played at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome before the start of the championship, saw the participation of Lazio, finalist of the Coppa Italia, despite the fact that in the previous year it was Juventus who won both major national trophies (Scudetto and Coppa Italia).
The Capitoline team dominated the match until five minutes from the end, when a magical free-kick by Paulo Dybala gave them a chance to get back in the race.
In the final minutes all sorts of things happened: in one of the final assaults Alex Sandro was brought down in the box, and again Dybala scored on a penalty kick to give the Bianconeri a hoped-for equalizer, but in the 93rd minute, just as everyone was preparing for extra time, a cross from the left by Lukaku was deflected into the net by Murgia, a young midfielder from the youth academy, who ran into the corner to give the trophy to his fans.

La trentatreesima edizione della Supercoppa Italiana è pronta a far battere i cuori dei tifosi di Juventus e Napoli, le due squadre che sul campo neutro del Mapei Stadium di Reggio Emilia sono pronte a darsi battaglia, per assicurare alle rispettive bacheche il primo trofeo di stagione.
I campioni d'Italia partecipano alla competizione (che hanno già vinto in otto occasioni, risultando la squadra con più successi) per la sedicesima volta, mentre il Napoli si è assicurato un'altra sfida agli "odiati" rivali della Juventus vincendo ai rigori la Coppa Italia nel mese di giugno dello scorso anno, per quello che sarà il quarto tentativo di aggiudicarsi il trofeo, dopo le due edizioni vinte nel 1990 e nel 2014, e quella persa nel 2012.
Juventus e Napoli si sono già affrontate in finale di Supercoppa altre tre volte, nel 1990, nel 2012 e nel 2014 e i precedenti sono a vantaggio della squadra partenopea, che ha potuto alzare il trofeo per due volte, contro una sola dei rivali. Nonostante il passo falso in campionato contro l'Inter, la squadra allenata da Andrea Pirlo tenterà pertanto questa sera di pareggiare il conto con gli azzurri e di portare così a nove la conta delle vittorie, ma non sarà per nulla facile sopravanzare il Napoli, galvanizzato dalla vittoria in stampo tennistico ottenuta sulla Fiorentina.
La storia della Supercoppa Italiana, iniziata nel 1988 con la vittoria del Milan sulla Sampdoria, è caratterizzata da match molto combattuti e spettacolari, spesso terminati oltre il novantesimo minuto. Certi che anche questa sera, seppur nello scenario deprimente di uno stadio vuoto, le due rivali sapranno fornire un intrattenimento altrettanto degno di nota, riviviamo di seguito le cinque finali più emozionanti del passato, insieme alle gesta dei giocatori che le hanno rese celebri.
Milan - Fiorentina 1-2

Alla nona edizione del trofeo, per la prima volta ad alzare la coppa non è la squadra vincitrice dello scudetto, ma quella che ha conquistato, nella stagione precedente, la Coppa Italia.
Il Milan campione d'Italia, già vincitore di quattro supercoppe, affronta a San Siro con una certa superficialità una Fiorentina carica e motivata, in grado di passare in vantaggio dopo pochi minuti grazie ad una rete di Batistuta, che con un gran numero scavalca Franco Baresi in velocità.
I padroni di casa iniziano a giocare e pareggiano con Savicevic, ma devono inchinarsi ancora una volta all'asso argentino nel secondo tempo, quando un perfetto calcio di punizione scavalca la barriera e si spegne in fondo alla rete. Il successo in Supercoppa segnerà l'inizio di una discreta stagione per i viola, in grado di arrivare fino alla semifinale della Coppa delle Coppe e di chiudere il campionato in nona posizione.

A poco più di due mesi di distanza dalla finale di Champions League, che a Manchester ha laureato la squadra rossonera campione d'Europa per la sesta volta, Juventus e Milan si ritrovano di fronte anche in Supercoppa italiana, nell'unica finale della storia prevista secondo la regola del silver goal.
Nonostante lo spettacolo eccezionale dei primi novanta minuti, le due squadre terminano sullo 0-0, ma è nel primo dei due tempi supplementari che la partita esplode definitivamente: Andrea Pirlo, all'epoca con la maglia del Milan, porta in vantaggio i rossoneri su calcio di rigore nel recupero del primo tempo supplementare, ma nell'azione successiva, con la forza della disperazione, la Juventus pareggia con Trezeguet, prolungando la partita che la i bianconeri vinceranno ai rigori, grazie alla parata di Buffon su Brocchi.
Inter-Roma 4-3 (d.t.s.)

Tre mesi dopo la finale di Coppa Italia, disputata sempre tra le due squadre, Inter e Roma si ritrivano a San Siro anche per la Supercoppa. E' la prima edizione del trofeo disputata dopo i noti fatti di calciopoli, che hanno assegnato lo scudetto ai nerazzurri dopo la retrocessione della Juventus e la penalizzazione del Milan, e i giallorossi sembrano quasi approfittare del presunto senso di inadeguatezza dell'Inter nel ruolo di campione d'Italia, terminando il primo tempo in vantaggio per 1-3, dopo essere stati avanti anche di tre reti.
Nella ripresa tuttavia gli uomini di Mancini raggiungono il pari, grazie alle reti di Crespo e Vieira, vincendo la partita ai supplementari, con un goal di Louis Figo e dando così l'avvio al ciclo vincente che durerà quattro stagioni.

Davanti ai quattordicimila spettatori dell'impianto qatariota, Juventus e Napoli danno vita alla loro terza sfida nella manifestazione, che fino a quel momento ha visto prevalere i partenopei nel 1990 e i bianconeri nel 2012.
La Juventus parte subito a mille e si porta in vantaggio dopo appena cinque minuti, con un goal dell'argentino Carlos Tevez, ma come spesso accade alla squadra allenata da Allegri, finisce per ritirarsi troppo indietro dopo il vantaggio, e subisce il pareggio di Higuain nel secondo tempo.
Ai tempi supplementare sono ancora i campioni d'Italia a trovare un nuovo vantaggio, sempre con Tevez, ma si fanno sorprendere ancora da Higuain, a due minuti dalla fine.
Con l'inerzia dalla loro parte, gli uomini allenati da Rafa Benitez riescono a conquistare il trofeo al nono calcio di rigore, grazie alla rete decisiva di Koulibaly, dopo che le due squadre avevano sbagliato entrambe i due precedenti tiri dal dischetto.
Juventus-Lazio 2-3

La trentesima edizione del trofeo, disputata allo stadio Olimpico di Roma prima dell'inizio del campionato, vede la partecipazione della Lazio, finalista della Coppa Italia, nonostante nell'annata precedente sia stata la Juventus a conquistare entrambi i trofei nazionali maggiori (Scudetto e Coppa Italia).
Sono i capitolini a dominare l'incontro fino a cinque minuti dalla fine, quando una magia di Paulo Dybala su calcio di punizione regala ai piemontesi la possibilità di tornare in corsa.
Negli ultimi minuti succede di tutto: in uno degli assalti finali Alex Sandro viene steso in area, e ancora Dybala realizza su calcio di rigore il momentaneo insperato pareggio dei bianconeri, ma al novantatreesimo, quando tutti si stanno preparando ormai ai tempi supplementari, un cross dalla sinistra di Lukaku viene deviato in rete da Murgia, giovane centrocampista proveniente dalla primavera, che corre sotto la curva a regalare così il trofeo ai suoi tifosi.
