Dear friends, lovers of Italian football,
with the match of the Olympic Stadium in Rome between Lazio and Parma, played on Thursday evening, the picture of the eighth finals of the Coppa Italia was concluded, which promoted to the next round the magnificent eight teams called to contend, from now until the final in May, the conquest of the second Italian trophy in order of importance.
In the round that saw the eight seeded teams (chosen on the basis of their placement in the last Serie A championship) take to the field, there was no lack of surprises, as two of them had to leave the competition prematurely. The most sensational elimination is probably that of Sassuolo, ousted from the Italian Cup by a Serie B team, Spal, currently third in the standings behind Empoli and Cittadella.
Ferrara's team, who had already knocked out another Serie A team, Crotone, in the third round, were able to take advantage of the numerical inferiority of the opponents, forced to play with ten players practically the whole second half due to red card to Djuricic and with an orderly match they got the better of a rather distracted Sassuolo. Now for Spal the adventure will continue at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, where they will face the Italian champions of Juventus, finalists of the last edition of the cup and winners of the Italian Supercup.
The Bianconeri of Andrea Pirlo have in fact, albeit with difficulty, beat Genoa in extra time, a team that has been reborn since Davide Ballardini returned to the bench. Despite a fantastic start, scoring two goals in half the first half, Juventus gradually faded in the second half, and a patient and well-positioned Genoa managed to come back from a double deficit and almost take the lead before succumbing in extra time.
The road for the champions of Italy seems now paved towards a semifinal against one of Inter and Milan (who will play in the quarter-finals), but the Piedmontese will have to be clever not to underestimate too much the opponent, who will come to Turin to play the classic match that is worth a season.
As mentioned earlier, the Milan derby between Inter and Milan will decide which of the Milanese teams will most likely face Juventus in next month's double semi-final. Milan, the Serie A leader, struggled more than expected to overcome derelict Torino in one of Marco Giampaolo's last appearances on the Granata bench.
Demonstrating that the Coppa Italia often offers unpredictable results due to the shuffling of formations by the coaches, it took penalty kicks to allow the Rossoneri to advance to the next round and the second team from Turin, who have shown that they suffer more from small teams than big ones, perhaps deserved more than their rivals.

Antonio Conte's Inter had to resort to a Lukaku great kick, one minute before the end of the game, and despite a good performance they were not able to avoid the game dragging on into extra time: to the advantage obtained by Vidal on a penalty kick, in fact, Kouamè answered in the second half for the Fiorentina, which then, entrenched in defence, managed to contain the adversary's outbursts and end the ninety minutes in a draw, although without being able to do anything against the experience and the physical power of the Belgian centre forward, who started from the bench but was able to direct the match from the moment he entered.
The quarter-final between the two Milanese teams will be one to watch and it is a pity that the San Siro could not be decorated by at least sixty thousand fans who, I am sure, would have attended the event, to witness what looks like an early play-off for city and perhaps national supremacy. Over the length of an entire championship I consider Inter to be the favourite, but in a straightforward match the unscrupulousness and freshness of the game of AC Milan could make the difference.
At the peak of its best period, Atalanta, coached by Gian Piero Gasperini, overwhelmed as expected Cagliari, able to stay in the game only for an hour, until the team from Bergamo shifted into fifth gear, becoming unstoppable. What impresses Atalanta is the ability to bite the opponents in the throat after having put the turbo to their gameplay; a bit like what happened to those who faced the best Napoli of Sarri, when Atalanta decides to hurt you, you can be sure that something unpleasant will happen. Maybe you'll bring home the skin, but you'll still have to be prepared to count the bruises.
It will therefore be SS Lazio, who in a surreal match between two teams on the pitch with a lot of young people eliminated Parma, who will try to stop Atalanta from reaching the semi-finals. With a goal in the 90th minute, Lazio beat the guests and avoided extra time, which seemed to be just around the corner. The team of Inzaghi is going through a good moment of form and the challenge to Atalanta is going to be a balanced one, even if I still think that the Lombardy team is the favourite for the passage to the semifinals.
Whoever thought that Napoli would have an easy time against Empoli, the Serie B league leaders, had to think twice, when the momentary advantages of Gattuso's players were recovered by the guests, not at all intimidated by the size and blazon of their opponents.
Only a goal from Petagna, just under a quarter of an hour from the end, allowed the Neapolitans to overcome the obstacle and prevent their match from going into extra time.
In the quarter-finals, Napoli will face Spezia, who in a surreal game in the capital were able to eliminate Roma in extra time. What happened at the Olimpico was incredible: The hosts, who were 0-2 down after a quarter of an hour, managed to recover thanks to goals from Pellegrini and Mkhitaryan, but were reduced to nine players at the start of extra time due to the expulsions of Mancini and Pau Lopez. They went completely crazy both on and off the field, making the sixth change against the rules, which changed the defeat on the field (2-4) to the one (0-3) handed down by the sporting judge.
The amateurish mistake has turned the Giallorossi into a powder keg: the coach Fonseca has been confirmed for now with clenched teeth, but most of the players do not seem to have appreciated the dismissal of the team manager Gianluca Gombar, considered the main responsible for the bad figure, and between some of them, including the captain Edin Dzeko, and the coach it seems that tears flew at the end of the match.

Cari amici, amanti del calcio italiano,
con la sfida dell'Olimpico di Roma tra Lazio e Parma, disputata giovedì sera, si è concluso il quadro degli ottavi di finale della Coppa Italia, che ha promosso al turno successivo le magnifiche otto squadre chiamate a contendersi, da qui fino alla finale di maggio, la conquista del secondo trofeo italiano in ordine di importanza.
Nel turno che ha visto scendere in campo le otto squadre teste di serie (scelte in base al piazzamento nello scorso campionato di Serie A) non sono tuttavia mancate le sorprese, dal momento che due di esse hanno dovuto abbandonare prematuramente la competizione. L'eliminazione più clamorosa è probabilmente quella del Sassuolo, estromesso dalla Coppa Italia per mano di una formazione di Serie B, la Spal, attualmente terza in cadetteria alle spalle di Empoli e Cittadella.
I ferraresi, che avevano già fatto fuori al terzo turno un'altra formazione di Serie A, il Crotone, hanno saputo approfittare dell'inferiorità numerica degli avversari, costretti a giocare in dieci praticamente tutto il secondo tempo per l'espulsione di Djuricic e con una gara ordinata hanno avuto la meglio di un Sassuolo piuttosto distratto. Ora per la Spal l'avventura continuerà all'Allianz Stadium di Torino, dove ad attenderla troverà i campioni d'Italia della Juventus, finalisti della scorsa edizione della coppa e freschi vincitori della Supercoppa italiana.
I bianconeri di Andrea Pirlo hanno infatti, seppur a fatica, avuto la meglio ai tempi supplementari del Genoa, rinato da quando sulla panchina è tornato a sedersi Davide Ballardini. Nonostante un avvio strepitoso, capace di mettere a segno due reti in metà del primo tempo, la Juventus è andata via via spegnendosi nella seconda parte della partita, ed un Genoa paziente e messo molto bene in campo è riuscito dapprima a rimontare il doppio svantaggio iniziale, poi quasi a portarsi in vantaggio, prima di soccombere nei tempi supplementari.
La strada per i campioni d'Italia sembra adesso spianata verso una semifinale contro una tra Inter e Milan (che si sfideranno nei quarti di finale), ma i piemontesi dovranno essere abili a non sottovalutare troppo l'avversario, che verrà a Torino per disputare la classica partita che vale una stagione.
Come detto poc'anzi, il derby di Milano tra Inter e Milan deciderà quale delle squadre meneghine dovrà vedersela con buona probabilità con la Juventus nella doppia semifinale del mese prossimo. Il Milan, capolista in Serie A, ha faticato più del previsto per avere ragione del derelitto Torino, in una delle ultime apparizioni di Marco Giampaolo sulla panchina granata.
A dimostrazione che spesso la Coppa Italia, per via dei rimescolamenti di formazione voluti dagli allenatori, offre risultati imprevedibili, ci sono voluti i calci di rigore per permettere ai rossoneri di avanzare al turno successivo e la seconda squadra di Torino, che ha dimostrato di soffrire di più le piccole squadre delle grandi, forse meritava addirtittura qualcosa in più dei rivali.
Ha dovuto ricorrere alla zampata di Lukaku, ad un minuto dall'epilogo ai calci di rigore, l'Inter di Antonio Conte, che nonostante una discreta prestazione non è riuscita ad evitare che la partita si trascinasse fino ai tempi supplementari: al vantaggio ottenuto con Vidal su calcio di rigore infatti, ha risposto nel secondo tempo Kouamè per i viola, che poi, arroccati in difesa, sono riusciti a contenere le sfuriate avversarie e a concludere in paregggio i novanta minuti regolamentari, pur senza nulla potere contro l'esperienza e la potenza fisica del centravanti belga, partito dalla panchina ma lo stesso capace di indirizzare la gara dal momento del suo ingresso.
Il quarto di finale tra le due squadre milanesi sarà tutto da vivere ed è un vero peccato che San Siro non possa essere addobbato dagli almeno sessantamila tifosi che, sono certo, avrebbero partecipato all'evento, per assistere a quello che sembra un primo spareggio anticipato per la supremazia cittadina e forse nazionale. Sulla lunghezza di un intero campionato ritengo l'Inter favorita, ma nella partita secca la spregiudicatezza e la freschezza del gioco del Milan potrebbe fare la differenza.
L'Atalanta di Gian Piero Gasperini, al culmine del suo periodo migliore, ha travolto come da pronostico il Cagliari, capace di rimanere in partita solo un'ora, ovvero fino al momento in cui la squadra bergamasca ha ingranato la quinta, diventando inarrestabile. Quello che colpisce della Dea è la capacità di azzannare alla gola gli avversari dopo aver inserito il turbo alla propria manovra; un po' come accadeva a chi affrontava il miglior Napoli di Sarri, quando l'Atalanta decide di farti male, puoi stare tranquillo che qualcosa di poco piacevole succedera. Forse porterai a casa la pelle, ma comunque dovrai prepararti a contare i lividi.
Sarà quindi la Lazio, che in una partita surreale tra due formazioni in campo con tantissimi giovani ha eliminato il Parma, a provare a sbarrare agli orobici la strada che porta alla semifinale. Con un goal al novantesimo i capitolini hanno avuto la meglio degli ospiti ed evitato i tempi supplementari che sembravano ormai dietro l'angolo. La squadra di Inzaghi sta attraversando un buon momento di forma e la sfida all'Atalanta si preannuncia tutto sommato equilibrata, anche se continuo a ritenere i lombardi favoriti per il passaggio alle semifinali.
Chi pensava che il Napoli avrebbe avuto vita facile contro l'Empoli, leader del campionato cadetto, si è dovuto ricredere ben due volte, quando i momentanei vantaggi dei giocatori di Gattuso sono stati recuperati dagli ospiti, per nulla intimoriti della grandezza e del blasone degli avversari.
Solo un goal di Petagna, a poco meno di un quarto d'ora dalla fine, ha permesso ai campani di superare l'ostacolo ed evitare che anche nella loro partita si svolgessero i tempi supplementari.
Nei quarti il Napoli troverà lo Spezia, che nella surreale partita giocata nella capitale è stato in grado di eliminare la Roma ai tempi supplementari. Quanto accaduto all'Olimpico ha dell'incredibile: i padroni di casa, sotto clamorosamente 0-2 dopo nemmeno un quarto d'ora di gioco, sono stati abili a recuperare, grazie alle reti di Pellegrini e Mkhitaryan, ma ridotti in nove all'inizio dei tempi supllementari per le espulsioni di Mancini e Pau Lopez sono andati completamente nel pallone sia in campo che fuori, effettuando contro regolamento il sesto cambio che ha mutato la sconfitta sul campo (2-4) con quella (0-3) inferta dal giudice sportivo.
L'errore dilettantesco ha trasformato l'ambiente giallorosso in una polveriera: l'allenatore Fonseca è stato confermato per ora a denti stretti ma buona parte dello spogliatoio sembra non aver gradito il licenziamento del team manager Gianluca Gombar, ritenuto il responsabile principale della brutta figura, e tra alcuni giocatori, compreso il capitano Edin Dzeko (messo fuori rosa), e l'allenatore pare siano volati gli stracci al termine della partita.
Atalanta-Napoli e Milan-Juventus potrebbero pertanto diventare le semifinali di questa edizione della Coppa Italia, ma per la conferma o la smentita di queste previsioni l'appuntamento è alla settimana prossima, sempre qui su Italy, per Coppa Italia review!
