Dear friends, lovers of Italian football,
the last round of the first half of the season presents, in the challenge against the always fearsome Atalanta, the last obstacle to overcome for the leader Milan, to be able to boast the deserved title of winter champion. In fact, the Rossoneri lead the ranking with three points ahead of the fellow citizens of Inter, thanks to a half of the championship played great, in which, however, the Rossoneri did not lack the help of good luck.
In this perspective, the match against the team of Gian Piero Gasperini seems to fall at the most propitious moment for Milan: Atalanta is in fact going through a slight downturn, which has led it to collect only two points in the last two games, and the match played on Wednesday against Udinese, postponed at the beginning of the championship, happened just three days before the challenge against the Rossoneri.
As mentioned in other articles, good seasons are often punctuated by a series of coincidences that favor the path, but there is still to swear on the fact that the Bergamasque troop will give their best to make difficult the task to the opponents, and maybe even more candidate in view of qualification to the Champions League.
Sixty matches have been played in Milan between the two teams in Serie A, with the hosts winning 29 times and the visitors ten times; however, Milan's last victory came in 2014, when a double from Kakà gave them the three points, while the match played in July in the latter part of the previous season ended 1-1.
Surprisingly, the most common result in the matches between Milan and Atalanta is the 0-0, even if, analyzing the characteristics and the path of the two teams in this season, I think it is difficult to verify a similar eventuality in Saturday's match; in the past, the meeting between the two challengers has almost always reserved goal and spectacle, and I'm sure that this occasion will not be an exception.
So let's relive, as usual, the most beautiful challenges between AC Milan and Atalanta, hoping that the emotions experienced over almost a century can be a harbinger of a great show even today.
AC Milan's most exciting victory
AC Milan v Atalanta 3-0 (24 September 1995)
On the fourth day of the 1995/96 Serie A, Milan coached by Fabio Capello, leading the championship with a full score, receives Atalanta, with the intention of detaching Juventus, main rival in the title race and the only team able to break the Rossoneri's hegemony, after the championship victory of the previous season.
Despite their obvious technical inferiority, the visitors played bravely until midway through the first half, giving Milan the upper hand, but had to surrender in the 25th minute when Desailly swept into the box to head a cross from the left into the net.
However, the guests reacted with pride and played great in the second half, without finding the goal. Capello understood the difficulties of his team and sent on Roberto Baggio, just bought by Juventus; the former Ballon d'Or winner changed the flat game of his team, first leading some fast counterattacks, then scoring the goal that closed the match with three minutes to go.
In injury-time, it was the turn of Paolo Di Canio to seal the result and the fourth win in a row for Milan, destined to win their 15th Scudetto at the end of the season.

On the penultimate day of the first half of the season, Milan and Atalanta meet at San Siro in the pre-Christmas round, but the festivities will be sweet only for Gasperini and his boys, able to conquer a success that in the long run will prove fundamental for the new qualification of the team from Bergamo to the Europa League.
Paired in seventh place with 24 points, twenty less than the leader Napoli, the two teams found themselves in opposite moods and the actions of the players on the field reflected it: Atalanta dominated the first half, so much so that Milan could hardly get out of their own half, and found the goal with the former product of the rossoneri youth academy, Brian Cristante, author of a formidable season.
Gattuso, then on the Rossoneri bench, tried to turn the game around in the second half and avoid yet another defeat for his side against a top-class opponent, but apart from a few mild attempts, the visitors' goal was never in danger of capitulating; twenty minutes from the end, on a masterful restart, Spinazzola crossed into the centre for Ilicic, who put the seal on the match with his header.
Milan will end the season in sixth place, qualifying for the Europa League, as will Atalanta, seventh with four points less than the Rossoneri, but who will lay the foundations to become the splendid team capable of qualifying for the Champions League two years in a row.

In a championship full of great strikers, Milan plays the lion's share, with a total of 65 goals scored in thirty games; nine of these are scored in the match of the third day of the first leg against Atalanta, which took the field with the clear intent of limiting the firepower of Rivera and his companions to get a draw, ending up with one of the worst defeats in its history.
The first half ended 4-1, thanks to the goals of Prati, Bigon, Rivera and Benetti, but it was in the second half that the Bergamasks finally collapsed, overwhelmed by individual mistakes and a bad tactical disposition.
Chiarugi, Rivera and Prati brought the score to 7-2 after ten minutes, and goals from Bigon and Prati again determined the final result of one of the most atypical matches in the history of Italian football.
Despite the record-breaking attack, Milan will finish the championship in second place, behind Juventus, but beating the Bianconeri on penalties in the final of the Italian Cup, while Atalanta will be relegated, after finishing in third-last place tied with Roma, Sampdoria and Lanerossi Vicenza due to goal difference.
In the end, the defeat at San Siro was decisive for the relegation of the Bergamasks, since even one goal less in the match against Milan would have allowed them to be saved.
Atalanta's biggest victory

The outbreak of war did not initially change the habits of the Italians, who were still able to follow the football championship in the 1940/41 season. Bologna, future champions of Italy, as well as other great teams such as Juventus and Milan (both in the first leg and in the second leg), had to surrender to a team of terrible boys, Atalanta coached by Ivo Fiorentini, which had among its ranks stars of the calibre of Edmondo Fabbri and Severo Cominelli.
In the match played at the San Siro, Milan (which was still called Milano at the time) was outclassed for the whole ninety minutes by the athletic freshness and rhythm of the opponents, and after this defeat they found themselves in eighth place, three points behind their rivals.
The Rossoneri, however, who had a good end to the championship, finished third, while Atalanta finished a flattering sixth.

Cari amici, amanti del calcio italiano,
l'ultimo turno del girone d'andata presenta, nella sfida alla sempre temibile Atalanta, l'ultimo scoglio da superare per la capolista Milan, per potersi fregiare del meritato titolo di campione d'inverno. I rossoneri infatti, guidano la graduatoria con tre punti di vantaggio sui concittadini dell'Inter, in virtù di una metà di campionato giocata alla grande, nella quale tuttavia non sono mancati ai rossoneri gli ausilii della buona sorte.
In quest'ottica anche la partita con la squadra di Gian Piero Gasperini sembra cadere nel momento più propizio per il Milan: l'Atalanta sta infatti attraversando un leggero momento di flessione, che l'ha portata a raccogliere solo due punti nelle ultime due partite con Genoa e Udinese, e il recupero disputato mercoledì della gara con i friulani, rinviata ad inizio campionato, è capitato proprio tre giorni prima della sfida ai rossoneri.
Come già detto in altri articoli, le stagioni buone sono spesso costellate anche da una serie di coincidenze che favoriscono il cammino, ma c'è comunque da giurare sul fatto che la truppa bergamasca darà il massimo per rendere difficilie il compito agli avversari, e magari rilanciarsi ancora di più in ottica qualificazione alla Champions League.
I precedenti giocati a Milano tra le due squadre in Serie A sono sessanta, e vedono una decisa prevalenza dei padroni di casa, che si sono imposti 29 volte, a fronte dei dieci successi degli ospiti; tuttavia l'ultima vittoria del Milan risale addirittura al 2014, quando una doppietta di Kakà regalò i tre punti ai meneghini, mentre la partita disputata a Luglio, nell'ultima parte di stagione del precedente campionato, si è conclusa sull'1-1.
A sorpresa però, il risultato più presente nelle sfide tra Milan e Atalanta è lo 0-0, anche se, analizzando le caratteristiche e il percorso delle due squadre in questa stagione, credo sia difficile si possa verificare anche nella sfida di sabato un'eventualità simile; in passato l'incrocio tra le due sfidanti ha quasi sempre riservato goal e spettacolo, e sono sicuro che anche questa occasione non farà eccezione.
Riviviamo pertanto, come di conseuetudine, le più belle sfide tra Milan e Atalanta, con l'auspicio che le emozioni vissute nel corso di quasi un secolo possano essere foriere di un grande spettacolo anche ai giorni nostri.
La vittoria più bella del Milan
Milan-Atalanta 3-0 (24 settembre 1995)
Alla quarta giornata della Serie A 1995/96, il Milan allenato da Fabio Capello, in testa al campionato a punteggio pieno, riceve l'Atalanta, con l'intento di staccare la Juventus, principale rivale nella corsa al titolo e unica squadra in grado di spezzare l'egemonia rossonera, dopo dopo la vittoria in campionato della stagione precedente.
Nonostante l'evidente inferiorità tecnica, gli ospiti se la giocano con coraggio fino alla metà del primo tempo, facendosi preferire al Milan, ma si devono arrendere al 25', quando Desailly svetta in area per deviare di testa in rete un cross proveniente dalla sinistra.
Gli ospiti però reagiscono bene e nella ripresa giocano alla grande, pur senza trovare la rete. Capello comprende le difficoltà dei suoi e manda in campo Roberto Baggio, appena acquistato dalla Juventus; l'ex pallone d'oro riesce a cambiare il gioco piatto della sua squadra, prima guidando alcuni veloci contropiedi, poi realizzando il goal che chiude la gara a tre minuti dalla fine.
In pieno recupero tocca a Paolo Di Canio suggellare il risultato e la quarta vittoria di fila del Milan, destinato a vincere alla grande, al termine della stagione, il suo quindicesimo scudetto.
La vittoria più bella dell'Atalanta

Alla penultima giornata del girone d'andata, Milan e Atalanta si ritrovano a San Siro nel turno pre-natalizio, ma le feste saranno dolci solo per Gasperini e i suoi ragazzi, in grado di conquistare un successo che alla lunga si rivelerà fondamentale per la nuova qualificazione della squadra bergamasca all'Europa League.
Appaiate al settimo posto a quota 24 punti, ben venti in meno della capolista Napoli, le due squadre si ritrovano tuttavia di umore opposto e le azioni dei calciatori in campo rispecchiano questi stati d'animo: l'Atalanta domina il primo tempo, tanto che il Milan non riesce quasi mai ad uscire dalla propria metà campo, e trova il goal con l'ex prodotto del vivaio rossonero, Brian Cristante, autore di una stagione formidabile.
Gattuso, all'epoca sulla panchina rossonera, prova a ribaltare le sorti dell'incontro nel secondo tempo e ad evitare l'ennesima sconfitta dei suoi contro un avversario di alta classifica, ma a parte qualche blando tentativo, la porta degli ospiti non rischia mai di capitolare; a venti minuti dalla fine, su una ripartenza magistrale, Spinazzola crossa al centro per Ilicic, che di testa mette il sigillo alla partita.
Il Milan chiuderà la stagione al sesto posto qualificandosi per l'Europa League come l'Atalanta, settima con quattro punti in meno dei rossoneri, ma che metterà le basi per diventare la splendida realtà capace di qualificarsi per due anni consecutivi alla Champions League.
La vittoria più larga del Milan
Milan-Atalanta 9-3 (15 ottobre 1972)
In un campionato costellato da grandi attaccanti, il reparto avanzato del Milan recita la parte del leone, con la bellezza di 65 goal complessivi realizzati in trenta partite; nove di questi vengono messi a segno nella partita della terza giornata d'andata contro l'Atalanta, che scesa in campo con il chiaro intento di limitare la potenza di fuoco di Rivera e compagni per ottenere un pareggio, finisce per andare incontro ad una delle peggiori sconfitte della sua storia.
Il primo tempo si conclude sul 4-1, grazie alle reti di Prati, Bigon, Rivera e Benetti, ma è nella ripresa che i bergamaschi crollano definitivamente, travolti dagli errori individuali e da una disposizione tattica sciagurata. Chiarugi, Rivera e Prati porteranno il risultato sul 7-2 dopo dieci minuti, e le reti di Bigon e ancora Prati determineranno il risultato finale di una delle più atipiche partite della storia del calcio italiano.
Nonostante l'attacco da record, il Milan terminerà il campionato in seconda posizione, alle spalle della Juventus, ma battendo ai rigori i bianconeri in finale di Coppa Italia, mentre l'Atalanta retrocederà, dopo essere terminata al terzultimo posto a pari punti con Roma, Sampdoria e Lanerossi Vicenza a causa della differenza reti.
A conti fatti, la disfatta subita a San Siro fu decisiva per la retrocessione degli orobici, dato che anche una sola rete subita in meno nella partita con il Milan, avrebbe permesso loro di salvarsi.
La vittoria più larga dell'Atalanta
Milano-Atalanta 0-3 (16 marzo 1941)
Lo scoppio della guerra non cambiò, in un primo momento, le abitudini degli italiani, che poterono seguire ugualmente il campionato di calcio della stagione 1940/41. Il Bologna, futuro campione d'Italia, così come altre grandi squadre, come la Juventus e il Milan (sia all'andata che al ritorno), dovranno arrendersi di fronte ad una squadra di ragazzi terribili, l'Atalanta allenata da Ivo Fiorentini, che aveva tra le sue fila stelle del calibro di Edmondo Fabbri e Severo Cominelli.
Nella sfida disputata a San Siro, il Milan (che allora si chiamava ancora Milano) verrà surclassato per tutti i novanta minuti dalla freschezza atletica e dal ritmo degli avversari, e dopo questa sconfitta si troverà all'ottavo posto, staccato di tre punti dai rivali di giornata.
La squadra rossonera tuttavia, artefice di un buon finale di campionato, si piazzerà terza, mentre per l'Atalanta ci sarà un lusinghiero sesto posto finale.
