LearnWithSteem - Growing Microgreen at Home | @saiseanim
How are you all? Nice to meet you guys again through a wonderful tutorial post. I have already posted about the Microgreens food prepared in my home. I leave the link for those who missed it. Today i am going to share my Microgreens growing experience with you. I will teach you an easy and simple method to grow microgreens at home. My motto is to eat healthy food and our own garden food, which is the toughest to get nowadays.
Are you ready to learn with me? Come let's get into the garden
Growing microgreens are very easy job to do. There are more than 80 microgreens grown worldwide. You can find many of these varieties available in the local market. You can grow all of them in your home, for that you just need the seeds. If you want them you can buy the seeds from online and start growing your own microgreens at home.
But for today i am just teaching with what we got in our home. It is used daily in our meals. Did you guess it? Yes, it is Mustard seeds. This is easily available in all nearby grocery stores. Let's start with the mustard seeds today.
Growing Mustard Microgreens
I took 3 tablespoons of mustard seeds(The date i started the process27-10-2022). And i soaked it in water for 24 hours. Then i prepared a tray to grow microgreens. For this, i took a rectangular-shaped carton box. I placed a piece of newspaper on the bottom of the tray. Then added about 1-inch thickness cocopeat on top of the newspaper. Here i used cocopeat made in the home.
I will do a separate post for making cocopeat at home
Then Next day (28-10-2022), i drained the water and spread the seeds on top of the cocopeat evenly. Then i gently sprayed water on top of the seeds. After that, i covered the tray with tissue paper and kept it in a shaded place for another 2 days.
You have to water it morning and evening time. Don't use RO water, normal tap water is enough for that. Just spraying a small amount of water is enough. We are using cocopeat, so it will store enough water to grow a plant. If you're using any plastic trays make sure it has holes to drain excess water. If you don't have cocopeat you can also grow on tissue paper. The only thing is you have to hydrate the tissue paper regularly.
Note: For the first two days don't disturb the seeds by touching them with your finger or something like that. The germination ability of the seeds will get affected. So don't do that.
You can see the growth of the seeds on 3rd day. Keep spraying a little bit of water every day. After 5th day the baby leaves will come out. At that time, the plant will be 1 or 2 inches in size and the leaves will be in yellow color. You can see it in the image above. After 7 days, the leaves turn a green color. Now it is ready to harvest. You can harvest these mustard microgreens within 7 to 10 days.
Harvesting
I harvested it on the 7th (02-11-2022)day. Use scissors to harvest the greens from the tray. After that wash the greens with ice water, it will keep the freshness of the plant. Then drain the water fully, and keep it closed in a shaded place. Then you can use it for your salad or however you like. Eating it raw will give the full benefits. Mustard greens taste a little bitter and peppery. Some people don't like to consume it raw. So, add this last when your food is done cooking.
Storage
Try to grow as much as you need, and consume it quickly. Don't keep it for too many days. If anything is left over, then wash the greens in ice water, and drain them fully. Put that in an air-tight container and keep it in the refrigerator. By doing this you can keep it fresh for up to 2-3 days.
I hope, you learned something new, and this is a very important need in our life too. You can grow all microgreens in the same way i mention above. Only the harvesting time will differ for each microgreen that you select to grow. Do harvesting before the true leaf's maturity.
Recently i posted a recipe in which i used Mustard Microgreens in that. You can check it out here Mustard Microgreens Omelet. You can support this active post too.
