What are heavy metals?
Heavy metals those things that when taken into the human system can lead to poisoning and causes damages such as liver problem, neurological disorder e.t.c.
There are different ways in which these heavy metals can get into the human system either by water or food (plants and animals) and this happens when leaching occurs and the animals graze on the contaminated water or plant.
There are five major heavy metals which includes lead, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury. They are very harmful to the health even in small quantity. There are also some that when taken in large quantity can also cause damages they are trace elements and they include manganese, zinc, iron, cobalt, nickel, e.t.c.. I'm going to talk about the major ones and their disorders.
LEAD
Lead is a highly toxic metal which has caused extensive environmental contamination and health problems. The major source of lead exposure is mainly industrial processes, food and smocking. Lead is stored in the bone but may affect any organ system. The effects of lead poisoning varies depending on the age of the individual and the amount of exposure. Lead over exposure may cause children to be less playful, clumsier, irritable, and sluggish (lethargic). In some cases, symptoms include headaches, vomiting, abdominal pain, lack of appetite constipation, slurred speech (dysarthria), changes in kidney function and unusually pale skin resulting from a low level of iron in the red blood cells (anemia). Neurological symptoms associated with lead overexposure include an impaired ability to coordinate voluntary movements (ataxia), brain damage, seizures, convulsions, swelling of the optic nerve, and/or impaired consciousness. Some affected children experience learning or behavioral problems such as mental retardation and selective deficits in language, cognitive function, balance, behavior, and school performance.
