Achievement 3 by @HilarySmartt Task : Content Etiquette

Hi, I left the University 2 years ago but I can still remember the anger I felt when I first turned in a course work through the turnit software and it came back 55% similar. I had spent all night in the library finishing this work so I could submit it before the 9am deadline the next day and yet, here I was with a 65% pass mark because I did not understand what it meant to reference.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is using another's work without proper citation. Not always, but to create a beautiful piece of write up, we carry out research, when it's time to write, we add content from the materials we have researched to our work, for it to be rich.
When you add the source of that content to your write up, you've cited the original creator's work which adds authenticity to yours. Without this, you have collected from the original creator without crediting them - creative theft.

How to? 👇🏾

There are a few best best practices within steemit for referencing. Yours can begin with a simple > , by adding this before your content, you create a quotation section for your content.

If the work word or sentence isnt yours eg a parable and you have typed it word for word, you should put it within quotation marks " " along with the name of the original creator. If you have paraphrased it, no need for the quotation mark but you should add the name of the original creator. You can follow this up by just dropping a link to this, which steemit immediately recognizes and makes clickable or store the link within a word which is chick.

> Never give up on your dreams because, "if you can think it, you can do it - Walt Disney.
It is not enough to simply note that “text source is Wikipedia”. It is best to add the specific link to the page the content is from. Where multiple sources have been used, adding the source after each separate idea is advised - @cryptokanon [source](https://steemit.com/hive-172186/@cryptokannon/achievement-3-mentor-by-cryptokannon-content-etiquette).

This will come out looking like this

Never give up on your dreams because, "if you can think it, you can do it - Walt Disney.
It is not enough to simply note that “text source is Wikipedia”. It is best to add the specific link to the page the content is from. Where multiple sources have been used, adding the source after each separate idea is advised - @cryptokanon source.

"Never give up on your dreams" is mine, "if you can think it, you can do it" is a direct copy/paste from Mr Disney and "It is not enough to simply note that “text source is Wikipedia”. It is best to add the specific link to the page the content is from. Where multiple sources have been used, adding the source after each separate idea is advised" is paraphrased. By adding @ infront of the originalcreator's name @cryptokanon, its now linked to his/her post.
I have added a link within the word "source" by putting the word "source" in brackets [] followed by the link in parentheses () .

You will find a lot of inline citation in posts within steemit like the one in the image below.

I have used the format to add links to my previous verified posts

By referencing, a writer has given their work credibility by crediting where they gathered materials from.

The steemit ecosystem rewards users with STEEM token as they contribute to it's community with quality and original content. It does this using the Proof-Of-Brain concept.
Within steemit, the Mosquito Squishers community harbors members of @endingplagiarism who uphold the quality of content within steemit by cleaning spam and plagiarised contents.

It's safe to say that within steemit there's a spoken rule which states:

if you're gonna use it, source it

I believe this is a practice we need to imbibe in general. Take yourself for instant, if someone is going to use your work, the least they can do is give you credit. By citing a creators work, you say a little thank you. It might even create butterflies in their stomach. It's always good to make others happy and feel appreciated.

On the bequest of @cryptokannon, I will like to say

"I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them"

Visit @cryptosharon who created the creative horizontal rulers I have been using and hope to continue using. Check out her post on these here.

Till next time ✌️

ps I am making this post for the 3rd time having deleted the previous 2 because it is not getting verified, i will appreciate if someone can comment on why some posts get verified and voted same day and others dont.
