Recently I read in newspaper that 2 people got arrested due to carrying a packet full of Thermometer. I laughted on reading this news article. Thermometer is a basic device used in Medical Industry to check the temperature of a person during fever and also Thermometer is not that much costly for smugling in flights. So I searched in google and find the interesting facts behind banning thermometer in all Aircrafts. I will share the interesting facts behind it with you.

1) How Thermometer works ?

Thermometer is a device which can find the actual body temperature of any person. Thermometer consist of Mercury metal which having low boiling point. It melts in low body temperature and move to the another end of Thermometer according to the body temperature. According to the Mercury movement in Thermometer scale we can find the exact temperature of one person.

2) Aircraft is made up of which metal ?

Answer is Alluminium. Alluminium is used to construct aircraft because of 2 reasons. Alluminium is weight less metal. So using this metal reduces the overall weight of Aircraft. Another major reason is less oxidation. Due to its less oxidation power it takes very long time to form rusting around the metals. Rusting reduces the strength of the metal and can cause damage to the Aircraft.

3) What is oxidation ?

Oxidation is the natural process of mixing oxygen in air with metal to form Rusting around the metals and reduces the strength of the metals.

You know that Thermometer contains Mercury which is highly reactive with Alluminium and forms Amalgam. Amalgam is a high Oxidation metal. When the thermometer breaks inside Aeroplane then the Mercury react with the plane's Aluminium and forms Amalgam. It can seriously affect the strength of the plane from outer surface and can give way to major accidents while flying. So for this reason only Thermometers are not allowed inside inside the Aeroplane.
But when you have severe medical emergeny, you can apply and get special permission to carry 1 Thermometer with your Checked bags.

You are allowed to carry Digital thermometer without Mercury. There is no restrictions for carrying digital thermometer with you when it is without Mercury.
