Do You Know - 3 || What is IP Rating in Mobile

Hello everyone

Waterproofing technology (IP) has become a huge trend in recent years. You can see in many advertisement of mobile phone about IP rating. Do you want to know how your device is protected? Most devices use IP Rating to calculate device protection from solids and liquids. Let's start by talking about IP ratings. Most high-end smartphones these days have an IP67 or IP68 rating. This includes the Samsung Galaxy S22 series, OnePlus 9 Pro and Google Pixel 6 series. However, what does that mean? Let's dig into it.

What is IP rating?

You probably know that IP ratings have something to do with protection from water and dust, but if you're reading this, that's probably up to you.

The IP rating tells you the degree of protection a device provides against solids and liquids. The International Electrotechnical Commission sets them up. The word "IP" stands for Ingress Protection (also International Protection) and is followed by two numbers. The first number next to word IP indicates the level of protection against some of the solid particles (dust, dirt...) and between one to six. The second number tells you how much water a device can handle without damage and goes from one to eight – the higher the number, the better the protection.

See the chart below for detailed information on what each number means:

IP No.Solid (First)Liquid (Second)
1Protected from solid objects over 50 mm (example: hands).Protected against vertically falling water drops.
2Protected from solid objects over 12 mm (eg: fingers).Protected from direct spray of water up to 15 degrees from vertical.
3Protected from solid objects greater than 2.5 mm (eg: tools and wires).Protected from direct water spray from vertical up to 60 degrees.
4Protected from solid objects greater than 1 mm (eg: small wires).Protected from water sprayed from all directions.
5Dust protected – limited dust is allowed.Protected against jet water from all directions.
6Dust-tight - no dust is allowed to enter.Protected against powerful jet water from all directions.
7
/
Protected against the effects of submersion up to 15 cm (5.9 in) and 1 meter (3.3 ft) for 30 minutes.
8
/
Protected against the effects of prolonged immersion in water under pressure. Typically 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) of immersion for up to 30 minutes.

As you can tell from the chart above, the IP67-rated handset is completely dust-tight and can survive under one meter of water (3.3 feet) for over 30 minutes. The IP68 rated device is completely dust-tight. It is protected against the effects of long-term submersion, meaning it can typically survive 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) of water for 30 minutes.

Water-resistant, but not waterproof

Even your smartphone has a highest IP rating, but it may not be a complete waterproof mobile. A phone with an IP68 rating can be dropped into a freshwater pool or tank and it should be fine. However, if the phone is submerged in a chlorinated pool or saltwater ocean, it can cause problems.

The rubber seals that normally protect a high IP rated phone from water damage can weaken over time. This may reduce the overall water resistance of the device. The same seals can corrode if a smartphone is spilled with coffee, soft drinks or champagne.
The IP rating for a phone is done under closed lab conditions, not from real-world situations. In other words, try to keep your phone dry even if it has a high IP rating. If it is wet don't charge immediately give some time to dry to avoid any short circuit.
