While trying to compile this lesson, I researched to see how people use the bolded expressions in the italized sentence above. In the process, I discovered that most English users can not identify the difference between “every day” and “everyday” hence, they tend to use them interchangeably. In the sentence, the two words function differently. You are about to master how to use them correctly when writing and I promise you that after this lesson you will not make the same mistake I made some months ago.
Every Day
The two words "every day" is an adverbial phrase.
An Adverbial phrase is a group of words that perform the function of an adverb. |
---|
In this case, “every day” adverb of frequency. It indicates how frequent or how often one does something, especially when it is regular, constant or usual. It answers the question, "How often?"
Okay, look at this example:
• When you wake up in the morning, you usually brush your teeth, have your bath, and get dressed before eating your food, right?
Waking up, brushing your teeth, having your bath and eating are things you do every day. This signifies that you do them daily from Monday to Sunday without omitting a day.
Let's see another example:
- Chisom and Dara take their dogs on a stroll every day.
In the sentence, Chisom and Dara walk their dogs daily, maybe in the evenings or very early in the morning. The phrase suggests that this is something they do frequently on each day of the week — weekdays and weekends.
Other Examples
- My dad runs the generating set every day so I can have enough power supply to work and get better.
- Rita's parents give her some money for snacks every day before she leaves for school.
- Pray every day until something happens.
Extra Point
You cannot say you go to school every day, that's because you only attend school during "weekdays" i.e Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. But you can use the word “every day” to suggest that you perform an action or partake in an activity daily.
Everyday
“Everyday” is an adjective used to describe something as very common, normal and not special or typical. It usually precedes a noun. i.e. Everyday + Noun. E.g Everyday life, everyday occurences, everyday wear, everyday clothes etc.
Example:
• A ballgown is not an everyday wear for women.
• A pair of T-shirt, shorts and sneakers are everyday outfits for most guys.
It's uncommon to see women get dressed in ball gowns or evening dresses except it's on special occasions, but T-shirts, shorts and sneakers are worn on a normal day. If someone wears everyday clothes, then they wear clothes suitable for ordinary days or casual outfits.
Example 2:
• Children hawkers have become an everyday sight in most cities.
This means that it is common to see children hawk their wares in most cities.
Take this test to see how much you understand this lesson.
For the questions below, you are expected to fill the blank spaces with either everyday or everyday.
