Word Chest: The Name of Young Animals by @ukpono

Word Chest is a fun-study session here on Steemkids that is established to help kids grow their vocabulary in the English language. In each series, new English words will be introduced to kids who understand the language or are in the process of mastering it. The aim is to build kids' fluency to enable them to express themselves, as well as, communicate effectively with others. To ensure that a lot of knowledge is impacted, each post will be explained in simple words so children of all ages can be carried along. Now kids, tag along, there will be something new to learn and teach your friends. Kids' lovers stand a chance of learning a great deal too. So... let's begin!

How well do you know the names given to baby animals?

First, remember that the word “animal” refers to “any living thing that is not a human being or plant”. Just as humans have babies, animals have their young too and they aren't known as Baby Elephant or Baby Snake. To find out more, let's visit the baby zoo.

Bear

A bear is a heavy wild animal, related to the dog and raccoon. It has thick furs, a very short tail, two flat feet with sharp claws (pointed parts of the ends of its feet) and can stand on two legs like a person. They are mainly found in America and Eurasia. Bears feed largely on fruit, plant matter, and insects, as well as, on flesh. A bear's young is known as a CUB.

Bird

It is a warm-blooded* creature covered with feathers. Birds have forelimbs* known as wings and two legs. Most birds can fly, as well as, lay eggs. A young bird is called HATCHLING. Can you think of any species of bird? Share them with your friends in the comment box below.

Cat

A small animal in the family of lions and tigers with soft fur that is usually kept as a domestic* or house pet. It has whiskers and meows. A young cat is a KITTEN. Do you love cats?

Cattle

This refers to cows or bulls that are kept on a farm or ranch for meat or milk. They moo. A CALF is a young cattle.

Deer

A deer is a large wild animal that has four long thin legs and brown fur. It eats grass and can run fast. Male deers have antlers (horns shaped like branches). A young deer is called FAWN.

Dog

A common house pet that is considered to be man's best friend. It has four legs and a tail. They are usually trained and used for hunting, guarding buildings or security purposes. A young dog is a PUPPY.

Dolphin

It is a large sea animal with a long pointed mouth or snout. A young dolphin is called CALF. They are very intelligent and friendly towards human beings.

Donkey

A domestic animal similar to a small horse but with large ears. It is used to carry loads. A young donkey is called FOAL.

Duck

A bird that lives in or near water has short legs, webbed feet (get with thin pieces of skin between the toes) and a wide flat bill (beak). A young duck is referred to as DUCKLING.

Eagle

It is a large bird with very good eyesight and shaped curved beak which it uses to kill other birds and animals for food. Its young one is an EAGLET.

Elephant

A large animal with thick grey skin, large ears, two curved teeth known as tusks and a long, flexible nose called a trunk. It is usually found in the continents, Africa and Asia. Its young one is called CALF.

Fish

This is a cold-blooded animal that lives in water, breathes through gills, and usually has fins, scales and a tail for swimming. A baby fish is called a FRY.

Fowl

This refers to a bird (such as a chicken) raised for eggs or meat. A young fowl or chicken is called CHICK.

Frog

A frog is a small animal with smooth skin and strong long hind legs with webbed feet which lives both on water and land. A young frog is called FROGLET or TADPOLE.

Giraffe

The giraffe is a very tall African animal that has a very long neck and legs. A baby giraffe is called CALF

Goat

An animal related to the sheep but of lighter build and with backwardly arching horns, a short tail, and a coat of straight hair reared for milk and meat. A young goat is called KID.

Horse

This is an animal with four legs, a mane and a tail that is used for riding and carrying or pulling loads. A young horse is a FOAL.

Kangaroo

A large Australian animal that moves by hopping on its powerful hind legs (back legs). A baby kangaroo is a JOEY.

Lion

A large wild cat with yellowish-brown fur that lives in parts of Africa and southern Asia. Its young one is a LION CUB.

Monkey

It is a type of animal that has a long tail which it uses to climb trees. A baby monkey is an INFANT

Panda

A panda is a large animal with black-and-white fur that looks like a bear and lives in China. Its CUB grows to become a mature Panda.

Pig

An animal with pink, black or brown skin, short legs, a snout and a short tail that curls around itself. A PIGLET is a young pig.

Rabbit

A small animal with soft fur, long ears, back legs that are longer than its front legs and a short fluffy tail. It either leaves in holes in the ground or as a pet.

Sheep

This is an animal with a thick coat often raised for meat or its wool and skin. A LAMB is a young sheep.

Snake

It has a long, thin body and no arms or legs. A baby snake is called SNAKELET

Squirrel

A small animal with a large bushy tail and soft fur that lives in trees.

Tiger

A large wild cat usually with a coat of yellow or orange fur and black stripes which lives in Asia. A young tiger is a CUB.

Tortoise

It is a kind of reptile with a hard round shell, that lives on land and moves very slowly. A HATCHLING is a young tortoise.

Zebra

This African animal looks like a horse and has black and white stripes covering its body. A young Zebra is also called FOAL.
