Hello, Kids

How have your lessons on the steemkidedu project been so far? I hope you have enjoyed them and you are learning something new weekly. We have had the following adventures on Word Chest so far:

NoLink
1.The Name of Young Animals
2.Occupation
3.Music
4.Homonym

Last week, @ghani12 participated in the activity given and I am impressed at the effort he made. This week we will learn new words related to the street. No! I'm not referring to vulgar words or slang. So what's this street all about?

The term "street" is an urban roadway that is lined with houses and buildings on both sides. Streets are different from alleys, thoroughfares, highways and expressways. A street is in a middle of a town. It connects one part of a town or city to the other. When using it in a sentence, it is usually preceded by the article "the".

Example:

  • There is a French cafe at the corner of the street.

Point 2
It can be used in the attributive too.
For instance:

  • Street children (i.e. homeless children who are finding it difficult to survive)
  • Street cat

Point 3
British speakers often say in a street where American speakers say on a street
Examples:
The shops in the High Street (BrE)
The store on Main Street (AmE)

This week's adventure is quite different. Here is a clue for the activity. Let the adventure begin!

Three friends walked sluggishly on the sidewalk, chatting loudly and laughing hysterically at a joke made by Titi, the eldest of them all. The tiny trickle of sweat on their faces sparked brightly like the sunbaked asphalt concrete road they walked on. Each of them wore a sunny smile that was warmer than the scorching sun which seemed to have little to no effect on their glowing ebony skin. The loud laughter had died down by now and the young friends continued with their conversation. They seem to be discussing a very interesting topic because neither of them paid any attention to the flashy cars plying the road nor did they notice a wave from a little girl on the other side of the street. They were so engrossed in their chit-chat that they almost bumped into another pedestrian who had just paused briefly to receive a call. Deeply shaken by the awkward situation they almost landed themselves in, Kemi, the youngest and tallest among them, muttered a low "we am sorry, sir" and called to her friends to quicken their steps.

"Why did you have to act like a terrified newborn, Kemi?", Titi asked feeling amused. Her eyes were beaming and it looked like the chuckle she was trying to suppress will explode any time soon. Kemi didn't utter a word. For a while, the chattering died down. When they got to a roundabout with a big globe at its centre, Kemi said with a tired voice,

"Can we stop by the sitting out area? I need to relax a bit."

Her pace was getting shorter and she began to trail behind Fortune and Titi.

"The plaza is just close by, Kemi," Titi replied.

But then Fortune chipped in, "How about we grab some snacks and drinks. It's only midday and we still have a lot of time left to purchase the shirts and shoes later."

His suggestion sounded like a lovely idea. But first, they searched for a beautiful spot with a bench and rocks to sit on. Then Titi dashed across the busy road to get some crackers and soft drinks from a provision shop. She had to stop in the middle of the road where there is a median strip to allow a vehicle coming from her right to pass. The shopkeeper who saw her jaywalking advised her to use the crosswalk when returning. Crossing at the zebra crossing or crosswalk is quite safer because vehicles halt to let pedestrians move to the other side of the road. Titi made a promise to herself never to jaywalk again since that was very risky.

For an hour plus, the three friends sat at a spot munching on their crackers and watching the bikers and children play on the thick artificial grass turf covering the sitting-out area. They counted the number of cars that zoomed by, taking note of the ones that slowed down when they got to the speed bump and then sped off again. Fortune decided to find out the total number of street furniture available too. From their position, they could see 15 streetlights, 5 concrete benches, a garbage can and 8 arts. These arts were not graffiti or street arts.

Soon the street got filled with people and vehicles. Kemi and her friends got up and began to stroll to the plaza. On their way, they helped a blind man access a curbed sidewalk by guiding him to the curb ramp. By the time they finished getting all they needed, they discovered that the traffic was congested. However, this didn't stop them from getting home on time.
