The small town of Colonia del Sacramento has a historic Old Town, listed as a UNESCO's World Heritage Site. Because of this old quarter, Colonia del Sacramento sees a lot of tourists. In the architecture you can see both Spanish and Portuguese influence. Colonia is located roughly opposite Buenos Aires, on the banks of the Rio de la Plata river. The distance between the two cities is only 50 kilometers, so it's easy reachable from Buenos Aires.

Colonia is a small town, but it is the oldest town in Uruguay's. It is also one of the few cities in this part of South America that has such a historical Old Quarter filled with colonial architecture. The architecture shows a mixture of Spanish and Portuguese influence. The city was founded in 1680 by the Portuguese, but then Spanish forces conquered the city. There were many years of constant change between Spanish and Portuguese rule. History also shows that Brazil has been involved. I think I read somewhere that Uruguay was a province of Brazil, but Uruguay finally gained status as an independent state in 1828.

The old town is picturesque with its small, colored houses and cobbled streets. One afternoon we took a stroll through the old quarter, down to the old harbour. It's not easy to see that it is an old port because all the modern boats located here. As we walk a little further, we come to a street where a couple of the houses seems abandoned for quite a while.

We noticed that the facade is used as a canvas by artists or someone who just wanted to decorate the house. We took our time to stop to look at the graffiti before we coninued. Colonia is a city that you should probably explore by just walking around and letting chance show you the city. That's what we did. We went up and down the days we were here.

On the way back we stopped to enjoy the sunset before heading back to the hotel.

Since Colonia is so close to Buenos Aires it is easy to take a day trip here Several ferry companies have boats that go between the two cities It took 1 hour and 15 minutes. The old town is so small that you don't need more than half a day. But the city has several museums, cafes and restaurants. We had two nights here and it was a nice stay. That turnd out to be enough time to walk the streets and actually see the town. It also meant that we could walk further outside the old qaurter. We got to see new buildings, street art and the beaches.
