The Plan For Revenge Is Disrupted By Quanah Parker

in #history5 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks, greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

We're in a series about the Wild West and the incredible story of an 11 year old German boy, Hermann, who was captured by an Apache war party from his family's farm in 1870 in Central Texas.

He's now 17-18 years old at this point in the story and has become a full blown warrior who hates and fears the White man. And in fact, has taken many a scalp. He's been with the Comanche for a couple of years now.

Yesterday's post

In the last post Hermann's village was brutally attacked by U.S. soldiers and Tankawa Indians.

The band swore vengeance but first they had to bury their dead, mourn, move to a safer location and then gather forces from remaining tribe remnants.

Enter the great Quanah Parker

When they moved far away up into the Northern Plains they were once again visited by Quanah Parker.

I say "once again" because he had talked the Apache band, which Hermann was part of, into going to the reservation a few years before.

For those who missed the earlier posts, Quanah has a very interesting story because his mother was a white lady who was captured by Comanches in Texas in 1836.

Here he is in full tribal regalia:

Quanah was one of her sons and he became one of the greatest Comanche chiefs. After he led a 700 warrior coalition of tribes on an attack against a small group of buffalo hunters fortified in an adobe church and lost because of the superior weapons of the hunters... he saw the writing on the wall.

As the Great Plains were invaded by tens of thousands of settlers each year in an unstoppable wave of expansion he knew the time of the free roaming Indian was over. So he became a liaison between the white man and the Indian.

Quanah turned into an eloquent statesmen and did more than any other person to bring the two sides together, saving countless lives in his tireless efforts. Here he is as statesman:

Quanah's argument

He told the tribe that the days of the wild Indian was over, that they were surrounded with numbers as the stars in the sky, and that they would all be killed if they didn't go onto the reservation.

He said the Great White Father in Washington would give them houses, would feed them, and that in time they would be like the white man with lots of good horses and cattle and nice clothes to wear.

He promised them that if they went with him to Fort Sill that no harm would come to them and they wouldn't be hurt in any way and that all would be well with them.

The debate raged

Obviously the band was torn. On one hand you had the greatest chief of their time urging them to come in and they respected him. On the other hand they knew they would be giving up the ability to live in their own homes.

They could no longer be warriors which was their way of life.

They would no longer be free to roam the plains and hunt as they want.

They would no longer be able to teach their children the ways of the Indian.

Instead, they would be penned up like cattle in a small compound under the suspicious eye of the white soldier.

And the worst part...and they didn't know this at the time or they probably would have chosen death...their children would be taken from them and sent to "Boarding School"(re-education and indoctrination centers) back East where they would be told that everything about their culture was evil and wrong.

If that ain't child abuse I don't know what is.

We'll see if the band is willing to give up their sworn vengeance in the next post. To not avenge the death of a tribe member was to dishonor that member.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

Very nice photos with very old ones too!

Howdy sir kaminchan I'm so glad you like them, I think these are some of my favorite photos that I've found!

Wow, things are really getting intense now. I am glad to not be in their shoes and have to debate such a difficult situation.

Those poor kids. Knowing how young children are - at times difficult but always very easily swayed by their surroundings - that certainly is a scary thought as to not only the indoctrination, but how those kids were treated.

Well in those schools they were fine, I mean like a strict Catholic school. They weren't intentionally mean to them, it was all about changing their thinking and brainwashing them to think, believe and act like whites. But many of the kids just played along and acted but then were total Indians when they got back home. But I'm sure the real small ones were successfully turned against their Indian culture.

I imagine it must have been at least a bit worse than Catholic school, because the teachers must have seen them as an inferior race, and probably treated them accordingly. Those nuns in Catholic school can be pretty scary though, so maybe it was comparable :)

Hopefully once most of those kids got back home they did revert back, even the little ones. I guess that's the good part about being easily swayed when a child. They can be moved back to their original course.

yeah well none of the other government programs worked well so maybe this one was the same way, they did need to learn English though so that's one good thing they got out of it.

Howdy steem-plus! Thanks so much for the upvote!

Difficult choice! however, as King Solomon said: a living dog is better than a dead lion! (Ecclesiastes 9: 4)

lol! I remember that proverb! But I haven't heard it in many years so thank you! That applies here very well.

Hi janton, Quanah was a most remarkable man but things never turn out the way it is promised. You know janton, making indigenous into white kids happened in Australia as well. It didn't work here either😐

Almost every government program fails to work as they want them too but they always cost a bloody fortune whether they work or not!

Howdy Sir @janton, some great shots here and pardon me for saying this, but I think I would have chosen a fighting death.
Just the South African way I think.
Blessings!

what a wild man! lol. I understand what you're saying and many wished they would have chosen that after they got on the reservations and found out that it was depressing, boring and filled with disease and starvation with none of the promises being kept by the government.
Thank you much for recognizing the great paintings and photos, these were some of the best I've found and the result of many hours of searching.

Hahaha I read a great truth today, but I forgot who wrote it. I know it was some secretary of state to wit;
"90% of politicians give the other 10% a bad name"
A truth then and still a truth today methinks!

haha! so true and it seems to be a universal law. the blatant and obvious results of the fallen state of man. one of them. But I think most people would change that 90% to 95%!

A good statement as usual Sir @jantonand I read another theological research statement that 1 in every 144,000 will be saved globally.
Makes one think doesn't it?

yeah it makes me wonder how that could be, I hope it will be much higher than that! Most people talk about a great End Times revival and surely that would drastically improve those ratios!

Howdy esteemapp! thank you for the upvote and platform!

Love the thorough research you do @janton backed up by fabulous images.

Howdy tonight Trudee! thank you so much...I thought this post had some of the best images that I've found so I really appreciate someone notices that! They only took me...I don't know...20 hours of searching to find! lol.

Your stories are always visually appealing John and as I Know how long it takes to do a decent job of researching, I do appreciate the effort you obviously put into your blogs. That leaves you with hours 4 left in the day to mow the lawns, cook the evening meal when your wife is working, catch up on emails and other chores and.......grab 40 winks before the n ext 20 hours hard labour begins. Phew! I'm tired just thinking about it. 😁

Haha! howdy again Trudee! yes, steemit consumes tons of time but I'd like to get to a point where I'm only posting every other day or 3 days a week or so. Either that or do alot less commenting because it's all way too consuming and we don't know for sure if it's going to turn out the way we want.

Thank you so much for the kind words too. That post had some of my favorite pictures on it and they took many hours to find. lol.

You're so right my friend. If only we knew exactly what lay ahead with steemit as it does take a lot of time. I think it is a good idea to pace oneself from time to time. I've had to lately, due to health issues, but every now and then I have steemit free days and when I post again I find I am more refreshed. 😊

Howdy today Trudee! A "steemit free day"...wow I haven't had one of those since I started posting! That's a strang concept but I think I'll be much more inclined to do that when I reach the vaunted elevation of rep70! (congratulations, by the way!)

Oh yes......I need my steemit free days. With the rate you are progressing it wont be long before you can treat yourself to a few of those too my friend. The big 7.0. is not far off at all. I hope you are planning a big party. I'll help you blow out the candles. 😁

Howdy today Trudee! Did you guys go to church today? As soon as I hit rep 67 it felt like I got stuck in quicksand! lol..things slowed down dramatically. I've been on 67 for over a month now and I'm only up to 67.6 but I'll keep plugging along. Your comment is a good reminder to get over to your blog though, thanks!
