Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

In the last post I shared more pottery examples of the Southwestern tribes, primarily the Hopi, Navajo, Zuni and Pueblo, and talked about the unusual hairstyle of the Hopi maidens.

After I published my post the lovely and gracious @tamaralovelace was kind enough to send me a video showing a Hopi mother styling her daughter's hair in the Squash Blossom style and explaining the puberty ceremony the young ladies go through, it's a great video if you're interested in the Hopi culture.

Well, today I have a few more pieces of pottery to share and I hope you enjoy them.

One of my favorite designs, simple but elegant:

A new piece precisely copying an ancient design:

Very cool design, to me it looks like an abstract owl:

My heart goes out to this lady even though she's long gone. She looks so miserable. This photo is from the National Archives and shows a Hopi potter selling her wares but it looks like her hand is a little disfigured or scarred. If I saw her I'd buy every bit of pottery she had! This was taken in the year 1900.

It's rare to find antique jugs with the handles intact:

Turtles were a common design theme:

Although most of the pottery follows the ancient designs, there are also newer designs being created by Navajo artists with the use of vibrant colors:

You get the idea. The designs and varieties are endless! Many items and all handcrafted by First Nations artists can be purchased at http://americanindianoriginals.com. Everything from jewelry to rugs, all handmade by American Indians.

Also, at https://perrynulltrading.com/ they have a tremendous selection of handcrafted jewelry and artwork which celebrate the culture and skill of the Native Americans. One of their artists is potter Bertha Tom.

She uses the ancient methods and designs of the Anasazi. Most designs she's gotten from collecting pottery shards and pieces from the land of her people.

Sort:

I absolutely love those ancient designs, although they really look very modern! I could even easily incorporate some of them into my own home decor.

It's strange how over the centuries the aesthetics don't change that much - all these years later we still appreciate similar colours, shapes and patterns.

Howdy there vliet! Thanks so much for stopping by and you are so right about the designs, I need to get some of those pottery pieces. I really like the look of your posts and you like history! That's my specialty, well, history of the American Wild West is my specialty so that might not be your thing but I'll stop by as often as I can to your blog. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Thanks @janton for stopping by! There're so many interesting blogs on steemit, it's hard to keep up :-) yes, history is something I love, doesn't matter which part of the world. For me it's the story of humanity and creativity that's so fascinating... although so much of it is very sad, I must say...

Howdy today vliet! yes, I get critizied for my history posts being too violent, bloody, or depressing but that's what our history is like, in every country of the world! But it's also a great way to learn how to not make the same mistakes. Thanks so much for getting back to me!

Hi @janton! The pottery pieces are quite beautiful! I love the ones with the vibrant colors but my favorites are the ones with the colors of the two front pieces in the second photo. I'm glad you included the video that @tamaralovelace sent you..it was fascinating to watch and hear the story behind the different hairstyles.

Howdy deerjay! I agree, the pottery is amazing and someday I'll have lots of it! I enjoyed the video too, very interesting and educational. Thanks so much for commenting!

You are welcome @janton!

Evenin’ Cowboy! You found fantastic pottery. I like the shape of them in the first photo.
The Hopi potter does look miserable. I wondered if her wrist and part of the hand were wrapped in sort of a bandage.
It’s great the modern artists use the older designs and ancient methods to make pottery.

Howdy redheadpei! Yeah that potter may have had some kind of bandage, I can't tell. She looks too frail to be lifting heavy potter though. Thanks, I'm a little crazy for great pottery!

Crazy stuff! I want to have them all!!

haha! you and me both sir kaminchan, you have good taste!

Hahaha! Crazy people like baskets and earthen pottery!

howdy sir kaminchan! I agree, it's totally amazing. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Im quite clumsy, so looking at those just makes me think....if I was involved in making them they would all have cracks or broken bits.
Without me there, they are really cool!

lol! well me too, I have zero artistic abilities or skills so I'm totally blown away by these!

Hey jonboy janton, you might need a few gold coins to buy one of these lovely pots. I hope the potters do a good business.

I think they range in price from about $150 to $300 but I haven't priced them all. So yes they are a little expensive but each one is signed by the artist and they are all unique so they're probably a good investment.
