Pinkertons: The Hounds Of Hell Are Unleashed

in #history5 years ago (edited)

With a watchful eye that never sleeps
The Pinkerton agent rides outlaw trails.
Within his sight he always keeps
The ones who rob the banks and rails.
And if there must be blood to shed
He'll have his six-gun in his hand,
And bring them in whether alive or dead
For the Pinkertons always get their man.

-"The Pinkerton Agent"

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas where we have a heat wave coming in with temperatures hitting almost 80 degrees on Monday and Tuesday! Way too warm for this time of year.

At any rate, we're in the middle of a series about two of America's most famous and successful outlaws, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In yesterday's post 6 members of the gang successfully robbed a train (without Butch) but it was evident that he planned it.

A man of his word?

The robbery took place in Wyoming and he had promised the governor of Wyoming that he wouldn't rob any trains or banks in that state again. He gave him his word when he was released from the Wyoming penitentiary.

In a later conversation with an attorney Butch confirmed that the reason he wasn't present for that job was because of the promise he made to the governor. So there was a type of honor which Butch carried but most would argue that he wasn't very sincere because after all, it was HIS gang using HIS plan to rob the train! But in his mind he was keeping his word.

Scores of Pinkertons are assigned

The robbery itself was so spectacular with the blown up train car and the brave car messenger, Charles E. Woodcock, who refused to open the door for the bandits...that the Union Pacific railroad said enough was enough. They hired the Pinkerton Detective Agency to hunt down the Wild Bunch.

I'm no fan of the Pinkertons because while they did round up some criminals and solve some crimes, they themselves ignored due process, the Constitution, and usually broke more laws than the outlaws they were chasing.

They were known for their tactics of infiltration, intimidation, extortion, murder and even torture.

Here's a vintage photo of three Pinkerton agents:

They were just a private organization hired out to the highest bidder with a "the end justifies the means" type of attitude. And because they worked with police and politicians and had "detective" in their name most people thought they were Lawmen but they weren't.

They were more like bounty hunters with access to all available information and networks. Plus, the funding by the wealthy railroads meant unlimited time and expense were to spent on their assignment until the Wild Bunch was caught or killed which agreed with the Pinkerton philosophy of relentless, never stop pursuit until the job is complete.

Three more Pinkerton agents:

The Pinkertons assigned their two best men to the chase: W. O. Sayles and a Texan named Charles Siringo. Here they are. Charles Siringo is on the left:

Charles Siringo turned out to be an absolute nightmare for Butch and Sundance. He was an expert tracker who often worked undercover and could pass himself off as a fellow outlaw while gathering evidence. Those two boys soon located money from robbery being deposited in three different states.

They found that one of the Wild Bunch members, Harvey Logan, had a brother and cousin who deposited money from that robbery. His cousin was arrested with no resistance but Harvey's brother tried to run out the back door of his house and they shot him in the back and killed him. I reckon they didn't feel like chasing him.

In the next post we'll see how Butch handles all this.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

Hello from the great plains of Texas. How are you keeping? The Pinkerton's sound like the answer and don't know why you don't like them. Getting the job done at all costs is the aim and sometimes is the best way. If they were around today we wouldn't have half the issues we currently have.

Howdy sir cryptoandcoffee! Been a rough week, internet went down so I took the week off basically. As far as the Pinkertons, when they are bigger criminals than the ones they are chasing then they cause more harm than good! lol.

They corrupted much of the law enforcement system by bribing, paying off and extorting people. Legitimate law enforcement was going to take care of the problem and in a lawful manner that built stronger relationships and cooperation among agencies, departments and governing bodies and that wouldn't destroy, harm or corrupt with the big money behind them like the Pinkertons had.

They aren't doing the same work today because they were too corrupt and lawless. Now they do some types of security work, like security guards and such.

Sorry about the internet that is always a bummer. I look forward to reading more about them. They may have been crooked themselves and overstepped the barriers, but if you get the job done it sometimes takes that.

yes sir cryptoandcoffee, I know what you mean and I agree that there are circumstances where that is called for and should probably be called for more ofen so that's a good point!

Howdy Janton, I know you probably wondering what happened to me, but I am really having hard time keeping up. I addition, but don't tel anyone, I had to go to emergency yesterday because my hand got infected over the weekend after the stitches were taken off. Anyway, I am taking antibiotics, so I should be fine soon. Nevertheless, I was still able to post a new recipe on Sunday night, so may check it out of you like.

Now I will continue reading what the gang is doing and the bloody Pinkertons. They are such a "lovely boys" aren't they? lol.

Yay! MIss Lena is back! I was really really beginning to wonder where you went and I was going to go see if you had posted anything too. Wow the stitched area got infected, did it turn red and swell up? Did it hurt? I'm glad you're going to be okay!
What are you having a hard time keeping up with, steemit post reading or real life stuff?

Howdy Janton! I guess little bit of everything, lol. It's difficult to manage with my sick hands and back pain.

yes, I guess it just slows everything way down right? But eventually you'll get the wrists or hands fixed and then the back worked on?

Eventually yes, but it will take two three months I guess. I am just letting you know, because you are always wondering where I am, lol.

Well I'm sure all your fans are wondering where you are when you disappear! Hey, as fast as time goes by, two or three months will feel like nothing.

Most of my friends knows I had surgery and they are not as anxious as you are, lol.

oh well....uh..I don't know what to say..lol..maybe they are more used to you disappearing for a couple days at a time?

You just inspired me to do some research on Pinkerton. They sound like they've got some stories to tell.

Howdy sir madgoat! yes, that would be a terrific topic for a post! I'd love to read about it, hope there is accurate information out there because they seem to be a dodgy bunch skirting the law for the big money players.

Morning janton, your little poem fits in the theme of Walker Texas Ranger - full of action in bringing the baddies to justice. Unlike many Pinkerton agents, Walker is honest to the core. Yes, Walker is showing on a TV station here in Australia!

ps - you can have too many keys, lol. Thanks for the warning - haha.

Yes angiemitchell if you start gaining weight be sure and check your key chain! lol. You guys get Walker, Texas Ranger, yay! The good guys always win in that show! That's a good one. Walker is a great example to follow, a good role model. I hope kids are watching it!

Well janton, we are fans and I love the kindness and compassion theme all through the stories. Religion is a good touch too. Shame there is not an up to date show with the same theme on TV, there are so many good morals in the storylines.

Exactly angiemitchell! When I was responding to you earlier I was thinking that there was nothing like it on tv now and I doubt if they would allow such a show on tv now, unfortunately. I mean they might but I'm sure it would be called racist and such nonsense!

I think you are correct - the old values are still with us and we need shows that reinforce these. But gosh what a man is Walker! He can do everything!!

haha! yes he is pretty amazing on and off the set and it sounds like he has a fan in you! lol. I like him because he is involved in causes that help the country and help people, he's working all the time for the betterment of society, not just having fun in a big mansion somewhere.

I agree with your opinion about the Pinkertons. I know in the East they were involved in labor disputes, always on the side of management and Pinkerton became a dirty word to the working class. They hired out to whoever would pay them the most.

yes Ma'am ...I haven't researched the labor disputes but I've heard about them and the reports were that they were "brutal" in their methods to squash the opposition.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Ohio actually banned The Pinkertons because they outnumbered the Army units in their state.

oh wow. haha, I believe it. That's a scary thought and it sounds like Ohio had the right idea, they must have been alarmed too. That's some fascinating information.

Not positive on my facts..just a distant tidbit that I recall from somewhere. I don't know why all those random things stick in my head, but I can't remember why I opened the cupboard door!

haha! well you have an amazing memory for history and things like that but I do things like forget why I went into a room!

There seems to be a slot in my brain for storing useless trivia. No room for math skills though!

Haha! For for storing useless trivia! I wish I had that skill. I'm a complete disaster at math, thank God Mrs. J is really good at it, it helps me all the time.

Howdy there steem-plus and thank you for the upvote and all you do to help others!

I don’t see as many rednecks with a ton of keys dangling from their belts these days. 😊
The Pinkerton seemed to be a law onto themselves. Many interesting stories about their unlawfu actions to break up unions back them. One e.g, was the Molly Maguires in the 1870s.
Hired by the president of the Philadelphia Railroad, Pinkerton agent, James McParland, using the alias "James McKenna", infiltrated the Molly Maguires, a 19th-century secret society of mainly Irish-American coal miners, leading to the downfall of the labor organization.

howdy redhedpei! Yes I haven't researched those big battles between the workers and the owners but I've heard that the Pinkertons were brutal in their tactics and methods. They were a scary lot. And there ya go, infiltration was one of their specialties. You know alot of history too redheadpei! Great comment!

Thanks Cowboy. I always get a little irate about injustices to keep people down and poor.

I agree, hey we need politicians like you! have you ever been involved in politics?

No I haven’t but thanks for the compliment. 😊

It's never too late. lol. It's such a dirty business though! You'd have to have skin as thick as a Rhino.

Seems like a thankless career with so much dirt being dug up on politicians.
I worked in banking, for a Credit Union quite awhile and liked their thinking. But I know little about crypto currencies. 😊

Of course he was a man of his word! Every time he said "Im gonna rob something" he did!

haha! howdy blacklux! yes in that way he was very honorable. And in some ways admirable.
